Dear Friends,

While I write this message, I am on a visit to Israelto negotiate the 3rd agreement for the Scampi project ofRGCA in Vijayawada with the Ben GrunionUniversity in Be’er Sheva. I have also been able to learnabout some of the modern aquaculture techniquesdeveloped by the country.

MPEDA and its 24 co-exhibitors had an excellentSeafood Exposition at Brussels late April. It was a matter of great delight that one of ourco-exhibitors, M/s. Dish Hospitality P Ltd, Mumbai won the Seafood Prix d’Elite specialaward for Originality in the product competition held at Brussels. As mentioned in myprevious message, certification has become very critical in the international marketing ofseafood. One could see the showcasing of various sustainably sourced and certified seafoodproducts throughout the ESE pavilions irrespective of their country of origin. We have tounderstand (and start taking necessary action) that the certification tag is going to be akey marketing tool for seafood in developed markets in the coming years.

Another matter of joy is that the Chinese authorities (AQSIQ) have accepted thecertification by Indian Authorities thereby clearing the way for continued seafood exportsto that country. MPEDA was in liaison with our Embassy in China almost on a dailybasis for this and our Counsellor (Trade & Commerce), Shri K Nagaraj Naidu was ofimmense help. As usual MPEDA was in the forefront to take up the genuine issues facedby exporters affecting trade and get solutions in their favour.

While the units on the East coast will be bustling with activity by June, those on theWest coast mostly will be facing a lull period for another couple of months due to fishingrestrictions. I am hopeful that the year ahead will be very prosperous for each and everystake holder of the fishing, aqua farming and seafood exporting community so that ourexports scale much higher.

MARKETING NEWSEffective showcasing of Indian Seafood in EuropeanSeafood Exposition 2012

The 20th edition of the prestigiousEuropean Seafood Exposition

(ESE), witnessed a strong participationof Indian seafood exporters underMPEDA - India pavilion. ESE,regarded as the largest seafood showon the globe, had 23 leading seafoodexporters as co-exhibitors from Indiatogether with Seafood ExportersAssociation of India (SEAI) andMPEDA this year.A c t i v ep a r t i c i p a t i o ncoupled with adcampaigns byMPEDA in printand electronicmedia made theIndia Pavilion a‘must visit’ placein Hall 7 andstands 1501 &1601 to majorbuyers, diplomatsand journalists inthe Show. Thisyear also MPEDAhas taken 448 sq.m. space. TheIndia Pavilion hadthe unique ‘Red Fort’ design with acolour tone and lighting that resembledthe original structure in our NationalCapital. It stood unique and distinctiveamongst other stands withconventional designs and colourpatterns.

MPEDA had displayed almost allthe products produced by the Indianseafood exporters. Special emphasiswas given to promote value addedseafood products, particularly theready-to-eat and ready-to-cook

products which were prominentlydisplayed.

The ESE this year also had morethan 1600 exhibitors from over 80countries in the 34000 sq. m. exhibitionspace. Along the sidelines of the ESE,there was an exclusive Show onseafood processing and alliedmachinery, Seafood Processing Europe(SPE) in Hall 4.

Europe as a whole had been thelargest market for Indian seafood,especially for cephalopods, despite theeconomic slowdown that affectedmany of our major markets in the EUsuch as Portugal, Italy, Spain andGreece. The trade enquiries in theShow indicated a shift in the businessproposal to countries like Poland,Turkey, besides the conventionalmarkets like Germany, UK and Russia.The trade enquiries received in theShow is published elsewhere in this

issue of MPEDA Newsletter.

Shri Santhosh Jha, Deputy Chiefof Mission and Charges’ d’ Affaires,Embassy of India, Brussels paid a visitto the India Pavilion on 25th April 2012alongwith Shri B Vanlalvawna,Counsellor (European Union). Ms.Ismat Jahan, Her ExcellencyAmbassador of Bangladesh toBelgium, Luxembourg and European

Union also made ashort visit to MPEDAstall and IndiaPavilion.

MPEDA hasalso organized theIndia Event on 25th

April 2012 from 13.00to 14.00 hrs. in theAmbassador Hall atHall 10. The eventaimed facilitatinginteractions betweenbuyers, exporters,diplomats and presspeople on Indianseafood had ane n t h r a l l i n gparticipation this year.

The India Event, which became anintegral part of MPEDA’s participationin ESE, started with a detailedpresentation by Chairman, MPEDAon the Indian seafood production andprocessing scenario. The presentationspecially emphasized on the initiativesin quality and sustainable fishery andaquaculture practices. Shri SanthoshJha, Deputy Chief of Mission andCharges’ d’ Affaires, Shri BVanlalvawna, Counsellor (EuropeanUnion) and other senior officials of

A grand seafood luncheon wasprovided to the gathering by ExecutiveChefs Mr. Amit Ghosh of SFC groupAbudhabi and Mr. Meril A Antony ofThe Gateway Hotel, Vijayawada. Theyalso arranged cooking demonstrationfor visitors to the MPEDA stand onfirst and third day of the exposition.

The co-exhibitors praised thearrangements made by MPEDA foreffective participation in ESE 2012.The SEAI exhibition space in IndiaPavilion had four freezers with display

of a number of product varieties forthe buyer to choose. It is consideredto be one among the largest display ofseafood in the ESE 2012. For the firsttime, we had also displayed a handfulvariety of fresh fishes, lobsters andcrabs in a dome chiller. The farmedCobia and Asian Seabass from RGCAunits attracted a lot of visitors andbusiness enthusiasts. The co-exhibitors were able to re-establishtheir relations with the existing buyersand could make several new ordersfrom buyers of various countries.MPEDA has also brought out for thefirst time a special co-exhibitor guideand an India Pavilion layout specificallyfor ESE 2012, which were appreciated

by co-exhibitors and visitors alike.The participation of MPEDA in

ESE 2012 was organized by Ms. LeenaNair IAS, Chairman, Mr. N Ramesh,Director (Marketing), Mr. K J Antonyand Dr. Ram Mohan M K, DeputyDirectors. The Ministry of Commerce& Industry was represented by Mrs.Amrit Raj, Director (Finance). SEAIwas represented by its Secretary, Mr.Sandu Joseph. The Embassy of Indiaat Brussels, especially a team ofofficials under Shri Rajgopal Sharma,Trade Adviser extended all support toMPEDA and co participants in makingthe participation in ESE 2012 andorganizing the India Event, a fruitfulone. �

Dish Hospitality wins for the second time, whileKaviari and Prins & Dingemanse take top honors at2012 Seafood Prix d’Elite

Dish Hospitality Pvt Ltd ofMumbai, India was presented

with a Seafood Prix d’Elite specialaward for Originality for its product,International Shrimp S’cones in aseparate function at Brussels on 24th

April 2012 in conjunction with theEuropean Seafood Exposition. Thisinnovative product consists of savorymini waffle cones with two flavors of

black tiger shrimp filling — shrimp increamy tomato gravy with a hint offenugreek, and shrimp in coconutcurry. The filling is provided inmicrowaveable packaging, whichallows the consumer to pipe it into thewaffle cones, and the package includesa unique cut-out tray to hold the conesupright.

Earlier Dish Hospitality won thesame award for their product ‘ShrimpLollypop’ in 2010. The company hadfour products in the final list forSeafood Prix d’Elite awards.

d’Elite new products competition atthe European Seafood Exposition, theworld’s largest and most prestigiousseafood event. The winners wereselected from a field of 37 finalists andwere announced this evening at aspecial Seafood Prix d’Elite reception.

Karviari of Paris, France took thetop award for best new retail productwith its entry, En K de Caviar®.Designed to change the way consumerseat caviar, En K de Caviar presents 15grams of Osetra caviar and a specialcaviar spoon in an original tin with anembossed lid. Available in six colors,the tin can be easily tucked into a bagto be enjoyed while traveling, playing,picnicking or working. The judgesparticularly noted the attractivenessand the originality of the presentation.

Kaviari’s En K de Caviar was alsopresented the Seafood Prix d’Elitespecial award for Retail Packaging.Designed to attract new consumersand offer new meal opportunities, theunique tin with sliding lid presentscaviar in fun and attractive way. Thesmall, convenient package also allowsconsumers to easily carry and enjoycaviar anywhere, and encourages newcustomers to try a luxury product.

In the foodservice category, thetop prize was given to Prins &Dingemanse for its product, ZeeuwseCreuse Caresse. This specially selectedZeeland Creuse oyster has receivedextra care and a diet of speciallycultivated algae. The oyster is grownin an optimal environment, rich in

nutrients, and without outsideinfluences, which allow it to becomefull-bodied, with a velvety, briny taste.The judges noted the high quality ofthis oyster and its story, which they feltwould be appealing to consumers.

2. The Seafood Prix d’Elite specialprize for Health & Nutrition waswon by Jens Møller ProductsApS of Lemvig, Denmark for itsproduct, Vita-All®. This non-sparkling energy/sports drink ismade of seaweed and black currant

1. Lerøy Påleggslaks Provence fromHallvard Lerøy in Bergen,Norway was awarded the SeafoodPrix d’Elite special award forConvenience. Designed to meetthe high demand for sandwichoptions in the Scandinavianmarket, these sandwich slices aremade from smoked salmon withflavorings from Provence. Theyare perfectly sized for bread andpresented in a consumer-friendlypackage. The product is alsoavailable in natural and pepperflavors.

3. A new line of seafood ready-mealsfrom Heiploeg Group inOostende, Belgium was presentedwith a Seafood Prix d’Elite specialaward for Seafood Product Line.This line features three seafoodcombinations: Seafood Duo forRisotto, featuring seabob shrimpand crayfish; Seafood Duo forPasta also with seabob shrimp andcrayfish; and Seafood Trio forPaella, with seabob shrimp,mussels and Alaska pollock. Theline is packed in colorful retailboxes and offers the consumer aquick and easy way to add seafoodand Mediterranean flavor to theirmeals.

The 37 Seafood Prix d’Elitefinalists in this year’s competitionrepresented 11 countries. The winnersand finalists were on display at a specialSeafood Prix d’Elite stand, Patio-4609,

A team led by Ms. Leena Nair IAS,Chairman, MPEDA visited the

Port of Rotterdam on 23rd April2012, subsequent to an invitationfrom the Port of Rotterdamauthorities. The visit was forfamiliarization of the variousfacilities and unique advantagesoffered by the port and to explorethe possibilities of using Rotterdamas a Gateway port to Europe.

It was a one-day tour on a vesselarranged by the port authority. Capt.Kees Weststrate, Sr. Project Managerof Port of Rotterdam gave a guidedtour of the port. He explainedthe salient features of the portand the ease of handling reefercargo through Rotterdam. Thevessel sailed past the importantterminals and facilities in theport.

Mr. Jan Bouman, GeneralManager of FrigoCare, the ColdStorage specialist showed theirstorage facility adjacent to theport. They have the BorderInspection facility in their own

premises which enables them do theveterinarian inspection as well asstorage of cargo, thus facilitatingsmoother and faster clearance. Hollandis the only country in the EU whereBorder Inspection can be done outsidethe port terminal and FrigoCare is oneamong the two active license holders.The biggest advantage of thisoperation is huge savings ondemurrage.

Mr. Dennis Peltzer, ManagerOperations of Samskip IcepakLogistics explained to the delegationtheir capability to do clearance and

distribution anywhere in Europe, beit a full truck load or even oneEuropallet. If documents are readywell in time prior arrival of vessel,port clearance, veterinary check andtrucking from container yard to coldstore can be done in 1-2 workingdays. Thus the requirement of freedays does not arise.

The MPEDA team also includedMr. N Ramesh, Director (Marketing)and Mr. K J Antony, DeputyDirector. Mr. Sandu Joseph,Secretary, SEAI, Mr. M C Roy of M/s. D2D Logistics and other exporters

also joined the delegation. Thevisit revealed the fact thatwithout having own office,today the exporters have anopportunity for storage anddistribution within Europe in acost effective and efficientmanner. Moreover, this opensup a whole new world in frontof the Indian exporters todeliver anywhere in Europe insmall parcels and thus todevelop the market further. �

Awareness Programmes on Ornamental FishDevelopment by MPEDA SRO, Guwahati in Tripura

FOCUS AREA

MPEDA SRO, Guwahati organizedfour awareness campaigns on

ornamental fish development in thestate of Tripura as part of expandingfishery activities of MPEDA in theNorth East. The programmes wereorganized in collaboration with KrishiVigyan Kendras (KVKs) and Collegeof Fisheries at Lembucherra in Tripuraduring March 2012. The areas selectedfor these programmes were WestTripura, Dhalai, Lembucherra andSouth Tripura.

The First awareness programmewas organised at Chebri in associationwith Divyodaya KVK in the WestTripura district, which was attended byabout 30 participants includingfarmers, fish hobbyist, youngentrepreneurs, Self Help Groups andNGOs. From the KVK, Dr. L C Patel,Programme Coordinator, Mr. SureshBiswas, SMS, Dr. Nurul Islam, SMS,Ms. Suchetha Chakraborty, SMS, Mr.Dipak Nath, SMS and Mr SubrataChoudhary, Programme Assistant werepresent during the programme.

The second programme wasorganized in College of Fisheries,Lembucherra, Tripura. Prof. Dr. A BPatel, HOD, Department ofAquaculture, Dr. Janmejay Parhi,Assistant Professor, Dr. Sagar CMandal, Assistant Professor and Dr.Mrinal Kanti Dutta, AssistantProfessor coordinated the programme.The programme was attended by 40students and technical officers of thecollege.

In South Tripura, the awarenessprogramme was organized at BirChandra Manu, in coordination withKrishi Vigyan Kendra, South Tripura.

The programme was attended by about40 participants including farmers, fishhobbyist, young entrepreneurs, SHG’s,NGO’s etc. Dr. A K Singh, ProgrammeCoordinator and Mr. BiswajeetDebnath, SMS of KVK assisted inorganizing the programme.

The fourth programme wasorganized at Dhalai in coordinationwith Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Salema ofDhalai district. The programme wasattended by Shri Abhijit Chakraborty,BDO and Shri Tarendra Debbarma,Suptd. Of Fisheries, Kamalpur, whogave a short speech on fisheriesdepartment initiatives on ornamental

fishery. Mr. Jagat Das, President,Salema Panchayat Samiti, Mr. KannuSingha, Vice President, SalemaPanchayat Samiti and Mr. RamanujChakraborty, SMS, KVK, Salema,South Tripura participated in theprogramme. The programme wasattended by about 31 participantsincluding farmers, fish hobbyist, youngentrepreneurs, SHG’s, NGO’s etc.

The awareness programmes werecoordinated by Dr. T R Gibin Kumar,Deputy Director, SRO Guwahati andShri Subenthung Odyuo, ProgrammeManager (OFD), NER.

Status of fisheries in Tripura- Dr. T R Gibin Kumar, Deputy Director, MPEDA

Tripura is the third smallest state ofIndia and second smallest state in

North Eastern region with an area of10,492 km2 but is the second mostpopulous state in the North East. Thestate has borders with Bangladesh inthe west, south and north; the Indianstates of Assam to the north-eastwhile Mizoram forms the easternboundary. Geographic isolation andcommunication bottleneck coupledwith insufficient infrastructure hasrestricted economic growth of thestate. With 99% fish eating population,fishery plays an important role in thestate not only as food item but also toimprove the socio-economic conditionof the 73.58% of the rural people. Asper 2007-08 statistics there exists ashortage of 10,500 MT of fish in thestate which necessitated the import offish from nearby Bangladesh and evenfrom distant Andhra Pradesh.

Until 21st January 2012 the stateof Tripura consisted of 4 districts, 17sub divisions and 40 developmentblocks. The four districts are WestTripura, South Tripura, North Tripuraand Dhalai. Since then, foradministrative purposes, 4 newdistricts, 6 new subdivisions and 5 newdevelopment blocks were created. Fournew districts created are Khowai,Unakoti, Sipahijala and Gomati. Thenew six sub-divisions are Jirania,Mohanpur, Kumarghat, Panisagar,Jampuijala and Karbook. Five newblocks are Yuvarajnagar, DurgaChawmuhani, Jolaibari, Silachari &Lefunga.

Tripura is the first state in Indiathat has developed a vision plan toachieve self-sufficiency in fishproduction. Tripura initiated the ‘fishfor all’ program for providing

each year through door to doorsurvey.

Training Programme on Organic Aquacultureconducted at Palghar, Thane District, Maharashtra

ATraining Programme on“Organic Aquaculture” was

conducted by MPEDA &INDOCERT jointly on 16th March2012 at Hotel Viva Celebration,Palghar, Thane dist., Maharashtra. Themajor objective of the training was topromote organic aquaculture in themaritime state of Maharashtra and tocreate awareness among the shrimpfarmers of Maharashtra on organicaquaculture. The programme wasorganized with the financial andtechnical support of Marine ProductsExport Development Authority(MPEDA), Kochi. The India OrganicAquaculture Project (IOAP) was initiatedby MPEDA for the promotion ofOrganic Aquaculture in India.INDOCERT has been closelyassociating with the IOAP, as one ofthe active project partners and as aninspection and certification body ofthe project, since 2007. The presentprogramme was planned to expand theorganic aquaculture activities in to newareas, with the experience and expertiseavailable with MPEDA andINDOCERT. The training programmewas attended by 24 participants.

The programme started with thewelcome address by Mr. Maruti DYaligar, Deputy Director, MPEDA. Inhis address, he mentioned that the Stateof Maharashtra has good potential todevelop organic farming, and thefarmers should make use of theopportunity.

The session was inaugurated byMr. Ulhas Sawant, AFDO, Palghar. Inhis inaugural address he cited thegrowing relevance of aquaculture forfood security and the importance oforganic aquaculture. He alsohighlighted about the current

aquaculture practices in the region andthe prospects of organic aquaculturein Maharastra.

The training started with thepresentation of Mr. Sreekumar M S,Inspection officer, INDOCERT. Heexplained the present status of organicaquaculture in the world and marketpotential for organic aquacultureproducts in the foreign countries. Healso explained about INDOCERT,introduction to organic aquaculturepractices and various certificationprocedures.

The next session started withorganic aquaculture standards as perthe EU regulations 834/2007and 710/2009 in which Mr. Sreekumarexplained the standard requirementsuch as the suitability of aquaticmedium, environmental assessment,sustainable management plan,conversion period, simultaneousproduction of organic and non-organic aquaculture animals, animalhusbandry and welfare practices,management of aquaculture, breeding,

transportation, feeding and feedrequirement, disease prevention andtreatment, sustainability and labelingetc with examples. The doubts raisedby the participants were clarified andopened discussions with the farmerson the practicability of theimplementation of the standards.

The details of the revised schemefor development of organic farmingby MPEDA under the ModifiedOrganic Aquaculture Programme(MOAP) were explained, along withthe guidelines for implementation ofthe programme by Mr. K Reji Mathew,Assistant Director, RC (Aqua),MPEDA, Panvel.

The final session started afterlunch, with a presentation on the smallholder group certification and internalcontrol system (ICS) by Mr. SreekumarM S. He detailed the Internal ControlSystem (ICS) as a part of adocumented quality assurance systemthat allows an external certificationbody to delegate the periodicalinspection of individual group

members to an identified body or unitwithin the certified operator. Heexplained the rationale behind ICSs forgroup certification which is to facilitatesmallholder certification i.e. simplifycertification and reduce its cost forsmallholders through coordinateddocumentation and to implement andmaintain a high quality assurancesystem for organic standards insmallholder production. He alsoexplained that group certificationenables smallholders to access organicmarkets to commercialize theirproducts at the international level andalso provide a good basis for soundquality systems to ensure organicquality and provide consumers withimported organic products atreasonable cost. He explained aboutthe requirements of operating manual,the importance of conducting risk

assessment and the need and therequirements of internal inspectorsand the necessity of internal standard.

FISH SCALES – FUNCTIONS & APPLICATIONSCompiled by: Dr. Al. Muthuraman, Dy. Director (Aq), MPEDA

The skin of most bony andcartilaginous fishes is covered by

scales. Scales vary enormously in size,shape, structure and extent, rangingfrom rigid armour plates in fishes suchas shrimp and boxfishes, tomicroscopic or absent in fishes suchas eels and anglerfishes. Themorphology of a scale can be used toidentify the species of fish it camefrom.

Fish scales are produced from themesoderm layer of the dermis, whichdistinguishes them from reptile scales.The same genes involved in tooth andhair development in mammals are alsoinvolved in scale development.

TYPES OF FISH SCALES

1)Placoid scalesAlso called dermal denticles,

placoid scales are found in thecartilaginous fishes: sharks, rays andchimaeras. They are structurallyhomologous with vertebrate teeth(“denticle” translates to “small tooth”),having a central pulp cavity suppliedwith blood vessels, surrounded by aconical layer of dentine, all of whichsits on top of a rectangular basal platethat rests on the dermis. Theoutermost layer is composed ofvitrodentine, a largely inorganicenamel-like substance. Placoid scalescannot grow in size, but rather morescales are added as the fish increasesin size.

Similar scales can also be foundunder the head of the Denticle herring.

Sharks are entirely covered byplacoid scales. Studies have found thatthe scales create tiny vortices thatreduce drag, which makes swimmingmore efficient, as well as quieter

compared to bony fishes. The amountof scale coverage is much less in raysand chimaeras. The rough,sandpaper-like textureof shark and rayskin, coupled with its toughness hasled it to be valued as a source ofleather. Called shagreen, one of itsmany applications was in the historicalmanufacture of hand-grips forswords.

2) Cosmoid scales

Cosmoid scales are found inseveral ancient lobe-finned fishes,including some of the earliestlungfishes and were probably derivedfrom a fusion of placoid scales. Theyare composed of a layer of dense,lamellar bone called isopedine, abovewhich is a layer of spongy bonesupplied with blood vessels. The bonelayers are covered by a complex dentinelayer called cosmine and a superficialouter coating of vitrodentine.Cosmoid scales increase in size

through the growth of the lamellarbone layer.

3) Ganoid ScalesGanoid scales are found in the

sturgeons, paddlefishes, gars, bowfinand bichirs. They aare derived fromcosmoid scales, with a layer of dentinein the place of cosmine, and a layer ofinorganic bone salt called ganoine inplace of vitrodentine. Most arediamond-shaped and connected bypeg-and-socket joints. In sturgeons,the scales are greatly enlarged intoarmor plates along the sides and back,while in the bowfin the scales aregreatly reduced in thickness toresemble cycloid seats.

4. Elasmoid ScalesElasmoid scales are thin,

imbricated scales composed of a layerof dense, lamellar bone calledisopedine, about which is a layer oftubercles usually composed of bone,

as in Eusthenopteron. The layer ofdentine that was present in the firstsarcopterygians is usually reduced, asin the extant coelacanth, or entirelyabsent, as in extant lungfisn and in theDevonian Eusthenopteron.Elasmoidscales appeared several times. They arepresent in some lobe-finned fishes:coelacanths, all extent and some extinctlungfishes, some tatrapodomorphslike Eusthenopteron, amiids and teleosts,whose cycloid and ctenoid scalesrepresent the least mineralizedelasmoid scales.

5. Cycloid and ctenoid Scales

Cycloid and ctenoid scales arefound in the teleosts, the more derivedclade of ray-finned fishes. Cycloidscales have smooth margins, whilectenoid scales have tiny teeth calledctenii on the posterior edge that givethem a rough texture. These scalescontain almost no bone, beingcomposed of a surface layer containinghydroxyapatite and calcium carbonate,and a deeper layer composed of mostlycollagen. The enamel of the otherscale types is reduced to superficialridges and ctenii. Most ray-finnedfishes have ctenoid scales. In flatfishes,some species have ctenoid scales onthe eyed side and cycloid scales on theblind side, while other species havectenoid scales in males and cycloidscales in females.

Ctenoid scales can be furthersubdivided into three types:� In crenate scales, the margin of

the scale bears indentations andprojections.

� In spinoid scales, the scale bearsspines that are continuous withthe scale itself.

� In “true” ctenoid scales, thespines on the scale are distinctstructures.Cycloid and ctenoid scales are

overlapping, making them more

flexible than cosmoid and ganoidscales. They grow in size throughadditions to the margin, creating bandsof uneven seasonal growth calledannuli (singular annulus). These bandscan be used to age the fish.Modifications of Fish Scales

Different groups of fish haveevolved a number of modified scalesto serve various functions.� Almost all fishes have a lateral line,

a system of mechanoreceptors thatdetect water movements. In bonyfishes, the scales along the lateralline have central pores that allowwater to contact the sensory cells.

� The dorsal fin spines of dogfish,shark and chimaeras, the stingingtail spines of stingrays, and the“saw” teeth of sawfishes andsawsharks are fused and modifiedplagcoid scales.

� River herrings and threadfins havvan abdominal row of scutes whichare scales with raised, sharp pointsthat are used for protection. Somejacks have a row of scutes followingthe lateral line on either side.

� Porcupinefishes have scalesmodified into spines.

� Surgeonfishes have a sharp, blade-like spines on either side of thecaudal peduncle.

� Some herrings, anchovies andhalfbeaks have deciduous scales,which are easily shed and aid inescaping predators.

� Male Percina darters have a row ofenlarged caducous scales betweenthe pelvic fins and the anus.Many groups of bony fishes,

including pipefishes and seahorses,several families of catfishes, sticklebacks, and poachers, have developedexternal bony plates, structurallyresembling placoid scales, as protectivearmous. In the boxfishes, the platesare all fused together to form a rigid

shell enclosing the entire body. Yetthese bony plates are not modifiedscales, but skin that has been ossified.Significance of Fish Scales

Fish scales contain a silverysubstance called “pearlesence” ornatural fish silver. This gives fish suchas herring – and yes, certain types oflipstick and nail polish – their pearlysheen. The makeup pigment consistsof 75 percent to 97 percent guanine and3 percent to 2 percent hypoxanthine.And since it takes a ton of fish to yield250g of guanine, the market price fornatural silver is proportionally high.

Functions of Fish ScalesBecause of the natural iridescence

One Chinese company on theInternet markets its skin-care productin these refreshingly candid terms:“Athena Fish Collagen capsule ismanufactured from fish scale or skinusing modern biochemical separationtechnology. It is (a) new collagen thatis safe to human being(s). There is 50%collagen in this product to promote skinhealth. It is suitable to support skin,hair….nail health and beauty.” AnIndian company M/s. Nitta Gelatin hasalso now started production of fishbased gelatin recently.

Dr. E G Silas, Chairman, Taskforcefor the preparation of

Guidelines for Green Certification wasdeputed by MPEDA for attending the5th Freshwater Fish Specialist Group(FFSG) Symposium 2012 on GlobalChallenges from 1-3 May, 2012 atChester, UK. The Symposium wasattended by delegates from 16countries. The Symposium on “GlobalChallenges in Caring for andConserving Freshwater Fishes” wasarranged under five plenary sessionsas given below:

1. Strategic issues in FishConservation.

2. Fish survival in the GeographicRegions- Africa, Meso Americaand South America.

3. Action for Sustainability.

4. Specialised habitats, specialisedfishes and special problemsincluding Lampreys, Cave-fish,and Live – bearers, rapid waterand migratory fishes.

5. Fish survival in the geographicregions: Europe, Middle East,Australasia, South Asia.

Dr. E G Silas presented a paperon ‘Green Certification of fresh waterornamental fishes- India’s Initiatives’in the third plenary session. In hispresentation, Dr. Silas brought out thethreats to the two hotspots ofbiodiversity in India, the WesternGhats and North Esatern Hills fromanthropogenic activities and naturalcalamities. Dr. Silas briefed about theefforts taken by MPEDA for bringingout the Guidelines for GreenCertification of Freshwater

Ornamental Fish and also theinitiatives by MPEDA to develop theOrnamental Fish Sector in India.

In addition to the plenary sessions,there were five workshops, each of onehour duration on the following topics.

1. Green Fish Initiative

2. Census of Freshwater Life Project

3. Mitigating the impact of dams onmigratory and other freshwaterFish Species

4. IUCN Anguilled Specialist Sub-group of FFSG DevelopmentPlanning

5. Prospects for establishing a globalfreshwater fish observatoryNetwork

After Dr. Silas’s presentation,Dr. David Cooper from NewZealand conducted a one hourworkshop on ‘Green Fish Initiativeon Global Stamp.’ There was afeeling that Dr. Cooper’s workshopwas inconclusive, while India hadprogressed far ahead. The FFSGmeeting announced to the world thatthe concept of Green Fish/Certification is not a novel one, andefforts are already taken by India forimplementing it for which guidelineshave already been prepared.Implementation of GreenCertification will be done in a phasedmanner through workshops,trainings and awareness programmes.

Seafood exports to China unaffectedGeneral Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and

Quarantine (AQSIQ), People’s Republic of China has brought in anotification during late May 2011 bringing in an Inspection andQuarantine Certification which has to accompany all the seafood exportsto China. It was widely rumoured that China is going to ban Indianseafood exports from 1st June 2012, which is the proposed date ofimplementation of the certification requirement.

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA)and the Export Inspection Council of India (EIC) under the Ministryof Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India had approached the ChineseAuthorities through Embassy of India in Beijing on this issue. Theformat of Inspection and Quarantine Certification issued with respectto marine products export from the Republic of India to the P R ofChina has been accepted by the Chinese Authorities. The ExportInspection Council of India would be issuing the required certificatesfor seafood exports to China. Exports of seafood from India to the PR of China would not be hindered by the said notification.

The marine finfish project ofRGCA that had developed

technology for breeding and massproduction of Cobia (Rachycentroncanadum) seeds last year, has nowsuccessfully developed anddemonstrated the technology forfarming of this species in Sea cages atits Sea Cage Farm in Muttom,Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu.Open Sea farming has become apromising area for aquaculture all overthe world. With an annual growth rateof 10%, this system of farming is nowpredicted to become the most popularform of aquaculture contributing themaximum to the total worldaquaculture production in the years tocome. At present every coastal countryis either involved or is seriouslyconsidering to engage in sea cagefarming.

There was a live demonstration ofSashimi preparation later. The raw cobiasashimi with soya sauce and wasabi wastasted by many. 298 kg of harvestedcobia was given to Central Institute ofFisheries Technology (CIFT) andNational Institute of Fisheries PostHarvest and Training (NIPHAT) forproduct development and otherevaluations. The first consignment ofsashimi grade cobia in chilled form wasairlifted to Taiwan on 12th April 2012and the response from the overseasbuyer on quality and acceptance ofcobia was encouraging, particularly onthe taste, fat content and freshness.MPEDA has also exhibited the farmedcobia by RGCA in the EuropeanSeafood Exposition held from 24th

to 26th April 2012 at Brussels with aview to find the export potential forthe species to other countries in future.

This is a landmark event in Indianaquaculture that promises excellent andendless opportunities for largeentrepreneurs to venture into and alsoan opportunity for fisher folk to ensurea steady income round the year withoutbeing totally dependent on the

unpredictable catches from the sea byventuring into sea farming of Cobia.

The formal programme wasconducted at Jeppia kalyanaMandapam at Muttom. The gatheringwas welcomed by Shri Thampi SamRaj, Project Director, RGCA. In hiswelcome address, he commented thatthis is one of the auspicious occasions

in the history of Indian aquaculture.Inspite of all the enhanced efforts byemploying more fleets and methods,marine catch is declining. So the onlyalternative to increase fish productionfrom Sea is development ofmariculture through the application ofeco friendly, user friendly andcommunity friendly principles. Todayit is demonstrated in a small scale thatit is possible to increase fishproductivity by applying aquaculturetechnology. Another way of increasingproductivity is by conservation andstock enhancement of the selectedspecies without challenging biosecurityand biodiversity. He recalled the searanching programme initiated by SriOommen Chandy, Honourable ChiefMinister of Kerala in Vizhinjam,Kerala by releasing quality Cobia seedsduring July 2011 in the exact fishinggrounds where the brooders werecaught. He suggested to evolvepolicies, development of technologies,investment base etc. to spreadmariculture.

indicated that cobia was selected as acandidate species as ( i) its seeds canbe produced in hatchery (ii) fast growthrate ( iii) acceptance of formulated feedand (iv) market acceptance etc. Cobiajuveniles used for stocking in the cageswere produced at the RGCA hatcheryfacility at Pozhiyoor. Pellet feedsimported from M/s. Uni-PresidentFeed Co., Taiwan was used during theentire culture period. Cobia seeds canbe produced throughout the year atstipulated intervals. Various stages ofproduction of cobia were explained inthe presentation. Later he showeddifferent types and different stages ofsea cage fabrication. The details offarming of cobia in sea cages atMuttom are given below:

Dr. E G Silas, in his presidentialaddress appealed to fishermen to takeup cage culture of cobia fish to earnextra income in addition to the income

from fishing. He congratulated theefforts taken by RGCA for making thisharvest possible. He pleaded the Stateand Union governments to providefinancial support to the fishermengroups who come forward to grow fishin cages in the Sea.

She explained thatoffshore mariculture in India is poisedfor a big leap with technology forfarming of marine finfish beingsuccessfully demonstrated by RajivGandhi Centre for Aquaculture(RGCA) at its sea cage farm in Muttomfishing Harbour. Over the last threedecades, export oriented aquaculturein India has been restricted to farmingthe marine/brackish water shrimp andfreshwater prawn in land basedaquaculture systems alone. Thoughthere is enormous potential forfarming of several other native aquaticspecies in several bio-categories ofrealms such as lakes, reservoirs, baysand open seas, efforts to utilize thesefor sustainable and environmentfriendly aquaculture has so far not beenexplored in the country.

Taking lead in making such newtechnologies available to theaquaculture industry, RGCA hasestablished different projects for highvalued marine finfish such as theGrouper, Cobia and Asian Seabass atspecies-specific locations across the

country. This is one such project inwhich Cobia is the candidate species.

Cobia, also known as Lemon fish,Ling, black King Fish or the BlackSalmon is a pelagic fish found intropical waters worldwide. There is nocommercial fishery for Cobia as thisfish is usually solitary in nature. Thisfish is known to grow exceedingly fastto approximately 6 – 8 Kg within a yearand therefore is a highly promisingspecies for aquaculture. Cobia meat hasa desirable appearance, texture andflavours that appeal to all seafoodlovers. As in other seafoods, Cobia alsohas a horde of health benefits andboasts of having one of the highestlevels of heart-healthy omega-3 fattyacid, much higher than that of theAtlantic salmon. Cobia is also rich inRiboflavin, vitamin B6, Magnesiumand Potassium. Success in breeding andseed production in Cobia is of recentorigin. However, its amazingly fastgrowth even in captivity as well as thenutrient profile of this species hasmade it extremely popular both amongaquaculturists as well as researchers.This fish, in the coming years is tippedto give the Atlantic salmon a run for

its money, both in terms of consumeracceptance as well as profitability inaquaculture.

Sea areas with pristine water, lessenvironmental fluctuations and a depthof around 20m are ideal for Seafarming of Cobia. South Tamil Naduand the south west coasts of India areexcellent grounds for farming Cobiaby virtue of their stable waterconditions throughout the year.

The technology for Sea CageFarming of Cobia, developed byRGCA presents excellent investmentopportunities to large entrepreneurs asa high investment-low risk venture witha very high future potential. Cobia hasgreat demand among all major seafoodmarkets across the world includingJapan, US and the UK. This demandis likely to grow considerably owing tothe growing popularity of the fish asan excellent Sashimi grade product.Presently, the global aquacultureproduction of Cobia is around 31,900tons with China, Taiwan and Vietnambeing the major countries that meet theentire Global demand. Thisopportunity is up for grabs for

prospective entrepreneurs as there isabsolutely no competition in India andvery little competition across the world.

This technology could alsobecome extremely popular among localfisher folk if adequate investmentsupport is provided to them either bygovernment agencies or NGOs. Byvirtue of their natural ability to stay onthe sea, they can easily manage suchoffshore installations and utilize thisas a steady source of income incontrast to the uncertainty in theirregular fishing operations. In additionto meeting the export demands, thefisher folk could also use their regularmarketing channels to supply limitedquantities of this super fresh fish intothe domestic markets based on thedemand to obtain the best prices.

Two major constraints inpopularization of Sea cage Farming inIndia are:

(1) Steady supply of Finfish Seedsaround the year and year afteryear in adequate quantities.

(2) Lack of policies for use of Openwater bodies.

The first constraint is alreadytaken care of with RGCA havingacquired the capability to breed the fishthroughout the year. The productioncapacity could easily be enhancedbased on the increasing demand. Seedsof other species of finfish such as theAsian Seabass can also be supplied byRGCA. Other agencies also havereported success in breeding othervarieties of marine finfishes.

Any major effort forcommercialization of the technologyfor mariculture will depend on thepolicy framework. Therefore policieson use of estuaries, bays and seas foraquaculture needs to be urgentlyformed giving due importance to an

ensuring minimal environmentalimpacts. Demarcation of suitable areasfor aquaculture also needs to beurgently looked into. With catchesfrom the sea steadily declining, urgentmeasures are needed to ensure thattechnological advances are usedresponsibly for food security and thatcommunities dependant on the sea forincome should have alternate andadditional sources of income.

Shri Tarun Shridhar IAS, JointSecretary (Fy), Department of AnimalHusbandry, Dairying & Fisheries,Ministry of Agriculture said that hewas happy to participate in twoimportant initiatives undertaken in thecountry, viz., i) laying of foundationstone for post harvest fish handlingfacility in the Jeppiar Fishing Harbourarea, ii) to witness the first realdemonstration of mariculture in thecountry which has resulted incommercial transaction. Heemphasized the need to develop moreinfrastructure facilities in the fisheriessector in India. He also said thataquaculture is the only food sectorwhich can supply the required protein

and nutrition to the ever growing worldpopulation. The sea cage farming yieldmore productivity than the land basedaquaculture systems. He requestedMPEDA to focus attention throughRGCA for the development ofpotential fresh water species for export

as well as domestic market.

Shri P Mohanasundaram,Director, MPEDA in his addressappreciated the RGCA for theadoption of technology for growingcobia fish in sea cages. Dr. Jeppiaar,Chancellor of the SathyabhamaUniversity and Chairman of theMuttom Fishing Harbour said that hewas ready to invest for 100 cages forthe fishermen groups for growingcobia fish for their employment andincome. He requested smooth supplyof cobia seeds from MPEDA. Vote ofthanks was proposed by Shri JohnsonD‘Cruz, Asst. Project Manager,RGCA.

An HACCP (Basic) trainingprogramme was organized by

MPEDA Regional Office, Vizag from11th to 16th March, 2012. The four daytraining programme was inauguratedby Shri V Padmanabham, RegionalPresident, SEAI (AP Region). In hisinaugural address, he has requested allthe participants representing variousseafood processing establishments inthe region to take maximum advantageof this kind of training for ensuringsafety of the seafood productsprocessed for export from the country.He emphasized the need to complywith various requirements stipulated bythe importing countries includingHACCP compliance, which is a foodsafety assurance system. To give animpetus to the participants attendingthe training programme, the RegionalPresident has announced two prizes(1st and 2nd) to those securing the 1st

The faculty attached to theHACCP Cell of MPEDA viz., Shri KS Nair, Shri S S Shaji and Shri V Vinodhandled various sessions during thefour day training workshop whichincluded the curriculum prescribed byUSFDA, the US Seafood Regulation,

special sessions on CGMP and SSOP,apart from the National Regulations,EU Regulations and Traceability.Besides, the participants were dividedinto different groups in the worksessions followed and assigned withtopics to familiarize them on HazardAnalysis, establishing Critical ControlPoints and Critical Limits, therebyevolving the HACCP plan for anidentified product.

The four-day training workshopconcluded on 16th March 2012 and aspromised, the Regional President(SEAI) gave away the prices to thosestood first and second in theexamination held on the last day. Heappreciated the efforts of MPEDA inconducting this type of trainingprogrammes periodically towardscapacity building among the technicalpersonnel in the industry.

The valedictory function of thetraining was chaired by Shri K N VimalKumar, Joint Director (QC) & theCourse Director of the programme. Inhis valedictory address, hecongratulated the participants whosecured first and second position in theexamination and urged all of them toput into practice the knowledgeacquired in their daily work in theprocessing establishments. Shri VPadmanabham and Shri K N VimalKumar gave away the coursecertificates to the trainees.

The programme concluded withthe vote of thanks proposed by ShriHanumantha Rao , State Co-ordinator,MPEDA- NETFISH, Visakhapatnam.

The Central Marine FisheriesResearch Institute (CMFRI)

located in all maritime states of India,in its quest to introduce new speciesof fish to Indian Aquaculturesuccessfully bred Silver Pompano, afish which is akin to highly pricedPomfrets. Very few countries aresuccessful in breeding this fish and theentire world production is only about300 tonnes. After the successful larvalrearing they were transported by roadin the last week of August 2011 fromMandapam, near Rameswaram inTamilnadu to Antervedi in the EastGodavari District of Andhra Pradeshat a distance of 1200 km and stockedin 1 acre pond of a farmer. About3,600 seed were stocked and fed withindigenous pellet feed and maintainedgood pond environment, resulting ina survival of more than 95%. Theformulated pellet feed cost is about Rs25/kg. An FCR of 1:1.8 was achievedin this crop. During the course of 8months they reached a size range of450-550 g weight, which is an excellenttable size for marketing. The Business Incubation Centreestablished at Central Institute of

Fisheries Technology under the projectZonal Technology Management –Business Planning and Development(ZTM-BPD) Unit was inaugurated byDr. S Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE andDirector General, ICAR on 5th April,2012. Inaugurating the Centre Dr.Ayyappan opined that Innovation andintegration of available technologiesis the need of the hour; for which Agri-incubator Centres like the one at CIFT,Cochin should lead the country. About40 technologies have already beencommercialized in the ICAR systemthrough 10 BPD units set up all overIndia. The Business Incubator facilityat CIFT, Cochin is a ‘One-Stop-Shop’for budding entrepreneurs. About 100such incubators will be set up by the12th Plan Period. The ICAR scientistsare presently on a ‘Farmer First’ drivedevoting 25% of their time for farmer-friendly technologies. Secondaryagriculture is gaining momentum in theICAR system in which CIFT is a

The Incubation Centre startedfunctioning at CIFT with the aim ofsupporting new and existingentrepreneurs to start successfulbusiness ventures and there bycommercializing the potentialtechnologies in the field of fisheriesand agriculture developed by ICARinstitutes in India. The Centreprovides an integrated package oftechnology, work space, shared officeservices, specialized equipment andvalue added business services. Atpresent, the office facilities are madeavailable to nine incubatees for amaximum period of three years. APilot Plant Complex with state-of-the-art generic semi-commercialproduction facilities for fish and meatbased products is also made availableto the incubatees.

Field visits to Cochin FishingHarbour,fish markets and fish landingcenters were also arranged for thefishermen trainees. A demonstrationfishing trip was carried out onboardFishermen Cooperative Society purseseiner ‘Bharat Darshan’ on 12th April,2012. Dr. Srinivasa Gopal gave awaythe certificates to the trainees on 13th

April, 2012 after successful completionof the training. �
