Course Description This course introduces some of the major political, economic and social developments that have shaped the history of the modern world. Selected case studies provide an interdisciplinary and comparative view of the 20th-century world.
Learning Outcomes
Distinguish between a primary and a secondary source, and recognize the relationship between historical sources and historical argument
Analyze primary sources in their historical contexts Read and evaluate secondary sources to understand an author’s basic argument about a past event Locate historic places (countries, regions, continents) on a world map Construct a timeline of significant events in the history of the twentieth-century world Identify and explain the significance of major developments and key figures in the creation of the twentieth-
century world Examine other societies in a global context, and situate one’s own society within a comparative, global
framework Plan, organize, and write an effective historical essay, making use of both primary and secondary sources to
assemble a coherent argument
Course Requirements
Careful reading of the assigned texts and thoughtful participation in discussions about the material are very important. Students are expected to come to every class and to come on time. Please see attendance policy. Grades will be based on the following:
Midterm and Final in class exams. One make-up exam allowed for documented emergency situations. No one will be permitted to leave the room and return once the exam has started. Students with special needs are advised to make arrangements with Disability Services for exam accommodations. Midterm: October 24th , Final Exam, as listed on NJIT website. Study guides will be made available before the exams.
Chapter Quizzes and map test: Chapter Quizzes: Three brief quizzes will test your knowledge of the material covered in Findley and Rothney, Twentieth-Century World. Map Test: A map test will be held in class on Thursday, October 10th.

Historical Research Paper. Students will write one historical research paper. Students will write one five page (1000-1200 words) term paper, based on the primary source documents. For this paper, a list of suggested topics and instructions will be provided by the 3rd week of class. Late papers will be penalized 5% for each day late. All papers will be checked for plagiarism. Plagiarized papers will receive a grade of ‘F’ with no chance of make-up and will be reported to the Dean. Please see Academic Integrity at the NJIT website http://integrity.njit.edu/index.html). Paper due Thursday, November 21st . Students that require help with writing are encouraged to take advantage of the free tutoring available at NJIT.
The final grade will be based on:
Midterm exam: 25% Final Exam: 25% Paper: 25% Chapter Quizzes and map test: 25% Borderline grades will be determined in accordance with regular and ontime attendance in the class. Attendance: Attendance will be taken every class. If you arrive after attendance is taken it is your responsibility to make your presence known after class. Students are allowed two ‘free’ absences during the semester. Absences beyond that, except for a documented emergency, will result in student’s final grade being lowered one half grade. You should plan on attending every class; however, as it will greatly help you do well in the course. If some emergency arises that prevents you from coming to class, please let the instructor know what is going on with you. Personal electronic information and communication devices: All computers, cell phones, blackberries, iphones (in any permutations and operating models) beepers, audio devices with or without earpieces, headsets, laptops, notebooks, etc. must be turned off and put away during class. Students should also not be reading newspapers or doing work for other classes during this class. These things create disturbing distractions and inhibit one’s full grasp of the material. Academic integrity and honesty are extremely important. The NJIT Honor Code will be upheld and any violations will be brought to the immediate attention of the Dean of Students.
