A JOINT CERTIFICATE OFFERED BY SCHOOLS OF BUSINESS AND ARCHITECTURE
THE PROGRAM |
The Sprott School of Business and The Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism are excited to launch a joint Certificate in Real Estate Development (CRED). The program brings together a range of professionals involved in city building, including architects, plan-ners, developers, and investors. Students will acquire the know-how, language, and contacts required to smoothly navigate the complex real estate develop-ment industry.
EIGHT COURSES | FOUR MODULES
The certificate program is conveniently structured in four, 3-day modules. Each module comprises two distinct courses, as follows:
Jeff Baysarowich is Director of Development Finance for Dream Unlimited. He has advanced financial modeling and expertise in financial analysis.
James Beach is the Director of Real Estate Development for Broccolini Real Estate Group. He was instrumental in leading the construction of Amazon’s new Ottawa distribu-tion centre.
Larry Beasley is the founding Principal of Beasley and Associates. He was the Chief Planner for the City of Van-couver for many years prior to that.
Joe Berridge is a partner at Urban Strategies. He is an urban planner and city builder who has had an integral role in the development of complex urban planning and regeneration projects around the world.
Janet Bradley is a lawyer with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Since 1977, she has practiced in the field of municipal law with an emphasis on land use planning.
Ted Fobert is the founding Partner of Fotenn with over 35 years of professional planning experience in both the public and private sectors.
Toby Greenbaum is the Executive Director of the National Executive Forum on Public Property, where real property executives from all three levels of government in Canada share their best practices.
Benjamin Gianni is an Associate Professor at Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism. A former Director, he now coordinates the Urbanism major.
Roderick Lahey is the principal of Roderick Lahey Archi-tects Inc. and a recognized expert in urban intensification.
Shawn Hamilton is managing director of the Ottawa Office of CBRE Canada, with over 25 years specializing in tenant representation services to corporations within Ottawa.
MODULE 1: OCT. 1-3, 20191A CITY BUILDING IN CONTEXT This course sets the historical, political, legal and geo-graphic context for contemporary land development, introduces the players, and explores the mechanisms and policies that control the built environment.
1B PLANNING AND ZONING DIMENSIONSA look at the processes through which development applications are made and how zoning works.
MODULE 2: NOV. 26-28, 2019.2A LEGAL DIMENSIONS IN REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENTAn overview of property ownership, and the basics in Corporate Law, Contracts, Municipal Law & Reme-dies, Real Property Fundamentals, and Real Estate Transactions.
2B FINANCE FUNDAMENTALSA basic introduction of financial statements and project evaluation tools to allow for rational decisions on projects, and an understanding of concepts that facilitate intelligent discussions with financial people.
MODULE 3: JAN. 21-23, 20203A REAL ESTATE FINANCEThis course examines the essential concepts, metrics, and calculations employed in real estate investment analysis for development projects.
3B MARKETING AND TRANSACTIONSThis course examines the market research, marketing and sales process in real estate development projects.
MODULE 4: FEB. 25-27, 20204A THE PRO FORMA As a final part of this certificate program, instructors will guide candidates in the writing of a pro forma for a hypo-thetical project.
4B CITY BUILDING BY DESIGNReturning to the theme of city building, this course ex-plores development initiatives in a broader urban context.

Jaime McKenna serves as Chief Investment Officer of Minto Apartment REIT. She is responsible for all invest-ment transactions including acquisitions, dispositions, development and capital investment.
Kevin McMahon, founder of Urban Logic Ottawa is a Real Estate Consultant with extensive experience providing research based advisory services for Ottawa’s residential investment and development market.
Tobi Nussbaum is the CEO of the National Captial Commission. His career has been focused on finding solutions to local and global public problems.
David Renfroe is president of Renfroe Land Manage-ment, Chairman of GOHBA’s Builder Developer Council, and a member of the City of Ottawa’s Planning Adviso-ry Committee and of the CHA’s Urban Council.
Rebecca Renfroe teaches accounting at the Sprott School of Business. A CPA with a Masters in Account-ing, Rebecca is the National Lead Facilitator for CPA Canada in Management Accounting, and develops curriculua and exam materials for CPAs.
Connor Shea is the Director of Asset and Investment Management at Colonnade BridgePort. He has many years experience in developments, repositions, and value add opportunities.
Jill Stoner is the Director of the Azrieli School of Ar-chitecture & Urbanism. She has written two books on architecture: Poems for Architects, and Toward a Minor Architecture.
Stephen Willis is the General Manager of Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development for the City of Ottawa. A planner and land Economist, he has more than 20 years of experience in the public and private sector.
Jamison Young is a partner in BLG’s Commercial Real Estate Group. His practice encompasses commercial real estate including acquisitions and dispositions, financings, leasing, and related commercial advice.
Adam Zaret is Vice President in the real estate practice of Ernst & Young Orenda Corporate Finance Inc. He has diversified experience in the real estate industry.
