Meeting Wed. 14th
September
Andrew York General
Manager of People
Who Care was our
speaker this
week. Andrew has
been the Manager for 6
years for PWC and has
a background in
nursing.
PWC overlap areas
currently carried out by
Silver Chain and local
councils. The ground
they cover is vast,
stretching from
Yanchep to Armadale
to the Peel inlet.
Four hundred
volunteers, including
youths and six
hundred corporate
volunteers ( who
volunteer for perhaps
just a day) reduce the
budget substantially
and allow People Who
Care to be so
successful.
Volunteers are aged
from 16 to 85 and assist
with gardening
through to
transportation to
medical appointments
to shopping.
Senior Citizen Centres,
hot meals and arts and
crafts are all catered for
via PWC. One of their
major fundraising
activities is a paper
recycling in Mandurah.
Over the years there
has been a major shift
from service providers
to a vast amount of
paperwork. Something
to be considered and
addressed in the future.
Perhaps Rotary and
PWC could benefit
from working together.
It was lovely to have
Anna Hughes and
Gordon Hay with us
again for the meeting
and we look forward to
seeing much more of
both Anna and
Gordon.
Welcome Carina
Marshall
Carina Marshall was
‘officially’ inducted
into the Club last
Wednesday. Already
involved with the
Microscope project,
Carina will mainly be
working on the
Community Vocational

Kho and Sophie

the Four Way Test
Speaking Competition.
Each will speak for 6
minutes on any subject
of their choosing,
weaving in Rotary’s
Four Way Test.
1. Is it the
TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all
concerned?
3. Will it build
GOODWILL and
BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be
BENEFICIAL to all
concerned?
The winner will receive
a $50 book voucher and
proceed to the next
round. All three
participants will

Quiz Night
Donna Bicknell has
told Pres. Bryant that
she will be resigning
from the Club,
therefore, the Quiz
Night she was to
organise is looking for
volunteers from the
members to take this
on and make it
happen. Remember,
funds are required for
the Club to support
projects.
Please put your hand
up to help put a Quiz
Night in place as soon
as possible.
Thank you Donna for
your contribution to
the Club and we look
forward to seeing you
at the End Polio
Breakfast.
Science Experience
The Science Experience
is a fun three days of
science activities for
students in Yr 9.
Each program is
designed to provide
those interested in
science with an
opportunity to engage
in a wide range of
science activities under
the guidance of
scientists.
It is aimed at
encouraging students
with an interest to
continue study in
science, mathematics
and technology.
Held each January,
seven students from
Christ Church
Grammar have applied
to attend through the
RCFB. The Club will
sponsor each for $80
and have asked
students to contribute
$30 each to give them
some responsibility
and commitment to
attend. Total cost of per
student for the three
day experience is $110.
Rotary Youth
Leadership Award
Camp
The RYLA Camp offers
men and women
between the ages of 18
and 25 an opportunity
to attend a residential
seminar designed to
develop their
leadership skills.
Rotarians and partners
are invited to attend
the final night dinner at
the seminar. The meal
and entertainment are
prepared entirely by
the participants
themselves.
The camp will be held
between 28th January
and 3rd February, 2012
and Stuart James is the
applicant who will be
sponsored by the
RCFB. Stuart, a fine
young man and son of
Toni and Bill James has
participated on Br.
James’ Pilgrimages of
Hope to India, Nepal
and central
Australia. The cost of
the camp is $695 for the
week.
Interact Talent Night
A couple of weeks
back, Liam Nuttall
from the Interact Club
of Freshwater Bay
asked for members to
consider sponsoring
$200 prize money
towards their Talent
Speaker Andrew York with Warren, Paddy & Pres. Bryant

activity in November.
Our members Clifford
and Gillian Yudelman
very quickly offered to
support this request. A
huge thank you to
Clifford and Gillian.
Group Study
Exchange
Our Applicant David
Gulland has been
successful in being
selected in the
outbound Group Study
Exchange Team to D.
6910, Georgia in May
June 2012.
Congratulations David,
you will be a great
asset to the Team.
Student Thomas
Marquis from France
Our member Warren
Milner generously
donated three
Scholarships to French
students at his Milner
International College.
Due to a very
unfortunate situation
with internet scam, two
students who were
cousins returned home.
One remaining,
Thomas Marquis,
whom Ken and Di took
out for a day, is now
back in Corsica and has
returned to University.
Tomas emailed the
following:
“I send you this email to
let you know that I’m in
Corsica, my trip to come
back in France has been
very long but it was fine,
with lots of souvenirs,
thinking to the good time
I spend in Australia.
I want to thank you again
for your kindness and
everything you did for
me, I hope I’ll come back
one day and see you
again.
I start my master degree
on 12th. I’m very excited
to go back in my
university but things are
different now, I really
want to travel and study
abroad.
Thank you for everything,
kind regards
Tomas Marquis”
Warren, this
scholarship you gave to
Tomas has changed his
life. He told us how
much his time at your
College has broadened
his vision and opened
him up to people of
cultures he had never
encountered. Thank
you for changing this
wonderful young
man’s life. We know
how grateful he is to
you for the opportunity
you gave him.
From the Rotary Club
of Nedlands Bulletin
"Committee Meetings"
These are a very
important part of being
a Rotarian and
President Doris Strahan
has spoken out in
support of our
Directors and
committees who
encounter poor
attendance, reminding
all members of how
important full
attendance at these
meetings is for the
effective functioning of
our committees and the
Club, and for the
timely delivery of
projects. This support
for each other, and the
ensuing feeling of
being supported by
others, are also equally
vital for the ongoing
enthusiasm and morale
of all Club members.’
Well said Doris.
Without regular
committee meetings a
club is unhealthy and
cannot function
efficiently.

Microscopes in
Schools Project
Sec. Di and Carina
Marshall met with the
head of science at
Curtin University last
Friday morning.
From this meeting a
spreadsheet has been
developed of
sponsoring clubs and
schools with
microscopes. To date
39 Rotary Clubs have
sponsored 3,760 units
in 142 schools. Two
corporations,
Watercorp and La
Mancha Resources in
Kalgoorlie have
sponsored two schools
each. Currently, 15
schools (450 units) are
awaiting
sponsors. Clubs have
been approached to
sponsor each request
that has been received,
however it can be a
lengthy process to have
clubs agree to sponsor
schools.
Two Clubs (with a
third in the pipeline) in
NSW have sponsored
three schools and
enquires are coming in
from Victoria and
South Australia.
The RC FB presented
30 microscopes to the
Dalkeith PS on
Thursday 15th
September and two
more schools,
Quintilian and
Swanbourne Primary
Schools will be
presented with 30 units
each at 9.00am and
9.25am respectively on
Friday, 23rd
September. Any
members who would
like to attend the
School Assemblies are
encouraged to do so.

Vocational service –
Vocational Service
Month
Don’t forget that
October is Vocational
Service month, so make
a special effort this year
to utilize speakers to
your club stressing this
special month.
All members of Rotary
have been invited to
join a club as
outstanding members
of their profession.
Therefore current and
new members should
be aware of Rotary’s
commitment to high
professional standards
through the 4-way test.
As speakers one can
utilize the current club
members by learning
about their professions,
understanding their
problems plus future
goals within their
business or industry.
In addition there are
many young
professionals located
close to your club
(Motor mechanics,
health services, school
teachers etc). Invite
them along to hear of
their experiences and
problems, this is good
PR and may result in
more potential
members. Reward
them for their
contributions to the
community with a club
certificate. It makes
them feel proud in
their contribution to
the community.
Finally don’t forget the
Changemaker Awards
for your Club as the
year is
progressing. The
requirements for this
award for vocational
service is listed below:
Vocational Service
More than 50 percent
of club members are
active in vocational
service projects and
activities.
All club members
display the Declaration
of Rotarians in
Businesses and
Professions at their
workplaces.
Conduct a career
counselling or
vocational training
program in the
community.
Conduct a program to
recognize high ethical
standards and public
values in the
community.
Promote The Four-Way
Test to New
Generations programs
in at least three
educational
institutions.
Organize at least one
professional
networking event in
which club members
can meet other local
professionals and
introduce them to
Rotary.
Sponsor a career day in
which club members
bring young people to
their places of business
to inform them about
career opportunities.
There are a total of 7
options above, and
your club should
complete at least 3
along with other
avenues of services to
be successful for the
Changemaker Award
(refer Rotary web site
for the full list).
In addition there is the
Presidential Citation, I
hope every club is
progressing well to
ensure they are
complying with the
requirements (Refer to
the Rotary Web site for
the full criteria).
