Last Week's MeetingOur guest last week was 22 year old Calum Foulner, whom we sponsored to attend the recent Rotary

Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp in January.

Calum spoke of how he had a very privileged life, until his mother unexpectedly commited suicide when he was 15. The outpouring of support from others instilled in him a desire to help others who had lost parents, which eventually saw him spending time at a remote village in Nepal amongst orphans.

Calum has set up his on Non Governmental Organisation called the CMF project (taken from his and his mother's initials, though he has since used the acronym for “Communities Moving Forward”). Since microcredit projects don't work in the remote villages in Nepal, his plan is to help the communities set up sustainable projects, with the CMF project investing in them, and then using 20% of the profits to fund the next substainable project. His first project is to establish apple orchards in that village in Nepal (since it is possible to grow apples at that altitude).

Calum found RYLA invaluable, and urged us to continue sponsoring others to attend it in future years.

Our board has agreed to assist Calum through registering his project with

Rotary Australia World C o m m u n i t y S e r v i c e (RAWCS), which will enable tax deductibility of donations made towards his work.

This Week's MeetingThis week is the first of two club forums where all members will have the opportunity to have input into activities of the club. We'll discuss ideas for projects, social and fundraising events, and seek your input into other areas such as whether we need to continue with a raffle at each meeting.

Rotary Foundation ContributionsA listing of Rotary Foundation contributions per club for this Rotary year shows that we have exceeded one of our giving goals and are very close to meeting the other.

Thanks to the generosity of Daniel and Claire Forsdyke and Tony Munday, our club has contributed US$4,325.26 towards the Annual Programs Fund (the primary source of funding for Foundation programs), and US$1,584.21 towards Polio Plus.

Club Bridges Culturesby Serafina Silaitoga The Fiji Times

ABORIGINAL women Kay Bingham and Tracy Latukulikefu caught the eyes of Labasa residents as they sat on the street bench, oblivious to the commotion they were creating.

Even The Fiji Times team was moved by their presence, seated as they were just 10 metres from the office, so we approached and greeted them.

The women seemed content, watching locals carry out what they were in town for. They mentioned their cultural exchange trip to Fiji; Cakaudrove was the starting point of the pogram.

Without any hesitation, the women said that they were enjoying the hospitality of the Fijian people.

"The people here are so friendly and easy to talk to and we have just enjoyed the local environment in Taveuni, Savusavu and we look forward to the Viti Levu trip," said Mrs Latukulikefu.

"We are here to learn more about the Fijian culture and get to know the various Fijian protocols, which we have.

"And it's just unique."

The group from Wiluna, North East of Perth came under the banner of Rotary International, Group Study Exchange. Team leader Hugh Lavery said the trip was the first for the Aboriginal community to Fiji.

"This idea came up after some Fijians living and working with the community in Wiluna, discussed how good it would be," he said.

"We have learnt a lot about the Fijian culture and we are learning more as we continue to visit villages and other places."

The group will visit some villages this week in Namosi, Ra and Wainibuka, Mr Lavery said.

He said they would take a group of Fijian people to Wiluna (Australia) this year, in June.

Waist Disposal ChallengeThe final leaderboard showing the Top 15 clubs was presented at the joint district conference on Sunday the 27th of March.

Well done to all those in Freshwater Bay who participated – we appeared in the list of Top clubs, at #11. Two thirds of our participants lost weight while on the challenge.

The winning club was Majimup, with 79% of members losing weight.

District AssemblyAll 2011 - 12 Board members are advised that the District Assembly will be held on Sunday 15 May at Mt Lawley Senior Campus, from 9 am to 12 noon.

Disaster RecoveryThe Rotary Club of Carnarvon has been helping clean up the small township of Gascoyne Junction. The Club members made a weekend visit to the Junction and were involved in a very hands on way to make life just a bit better for the people of Gascoyne Junction.

Our truck load of mattresses (510 in all) got away to Queensland during March. Their distribution had been pre-arranged and the mattresses did not remain long in the Brisbane depot once they were received. The feedback from District 9630 was very positive; the mattresses were badly needed and were much appreciated.

The Rotary Club of Perth organised a "WOW" concert to raise funds to support the victims of the recent bush fires in Kelmscott. The concert held on 2 April was a success raising a figure of approximately $10,000 for the cause. People appear to be slowly

recovering from the earthquake that destro yed so much of Christchurch and took so many lives. Although there was a suggestion from some of our eastern seaboard Australian Districts to offer home hosting for those from Christchurch needing to get away for a bit, the main areas of support that we can offer would appear to be money a n d d o n a t i o n s o f ShelterBoxes. For those wishing to give money, I suggest donations direct to the Canterbury Mayoral Relief Fund.

The tsunami that hit Japan and took thousands of lives and the subsequent concerns about the damaged nuclear power plant represent the largest of the recent disasters to hit the world. There is a need for emergency shelter for so many that have lost their homes to the tsunami and ShelterBox is working hard to provide help in that regard. I was very pleased at Conference to be able to announce that District 9455, in response specifically to the need in Japan, had donated 85 ShelterBoxes. That number grew quickly in the couple of days after conference to a figure of about 100 by the end of March. This is a fantastic effort from our District and it shows your concern for those that have lost so much.

From the District Governor

April is Magazine MonthMagazine Month is a reminder to us all to think about our Rotary magazines and to submit articles that will promote our Clubs, our District and Rotary.

District ConferenceThe combined District Conference, an inaugural and joint conference for Districts 9455 and 9465, was held at Burswood on the weekend of 25 - 27 March. The positive feedback from many attendees on the standard of the speakers and the strong Rotary content was very pleasing. The social functions on the Friday and Saturday nights were a lot of fun and very successful.

My thanks go to those that participated   and particularly to those that contributed in so many different ways to making the weekend a success.

Club ActivitiesThe Rotary Club of Cambridge held its annual "Fossil Rock" concert fundraiser at the Quarry Amphetheatre on Saturday 12 March. It was a wonderful evening under the stars enjoying music from the 50's, 60's and 70's with a large group of jive enthousiasts filling the dance floor.

On Sunday 20 March, the Rotary Club of Heirisson held its inaugural "Duck Race". It was a wonderful afternoon with a good crowd. As a first time event it was very successful and promises great things for the future.

The Rotary Club of Geraldton-Greenough is to hold its annual "Redhill" concert on Saturday 9 April. This is a very popular event and this year it will feature James Reyne. If you can make it to Geraldton for the weekend, you can be assured of a great time.

District's second club with the possibility of a third being considered.

Group Study ExchangeWe have previously announced that we will have a Group Study Exchange team departing for Germany (District 1880) in May. Led by Franziska Forrer from the Rotary Club of Midland, these young people will be great ambassadors for our District and Australia during their trip. Regrettably, due to the global financial crisis, The Rotary Foundation limited funding to a two year exchange which means the inbound team from District 1880 will not arrive here until March / April 2012 and will be at the District Conference to be held in Geraldton.

Our District is also involved in a Special Focus Group Study Exchange with Fiji, a part of District 9920. A team from Wiluna led by Past District Governor Hugh Lavery departed Perth for Fiji on Sunday 27 March for their one month visit. The Fijian team will visit   Western Australia   arriving during

May and will spend most of their time in Wiluna.

District Governor Nominee for 2013-14I  am pleased to confirm the appointment of Hank de Smit of the Rotary Club of Mt Lawley as our District Governor Nominee effective 1 July 2011. Hank will be our District Governor in 2013-14.

TrainingDistrict Governor Elect Liz Westoby supported by Past District Governor Geoff Simpson conducted an excellent Training Seminar for Presidents Elect on the weekend of 12/13 March at the Capricorn Resort, Yanchep.

This was preceeded by a Rotary Leadership Institute for a number of the Presidents Elect on Friday 11 March.

Rotary International and District AwardsAt the Business Session held at Conference, I was pleased to confirm that Emeritus Professor John Renner of the Rotary Club of Nedlands had been awarded with the very

prestigious Service Above Self Award. This was r e p o r t e d i n l a s t month's Newsletter.

Geoff Russell of the Rotary Club of Mt Lawley  received the Club Builder of the Year Award. this award recognises Rotarians who have made a significant impact in s u p p o r t i n g a n d strengthening their Clubs.

The Best Metropolitan Club Bulletin went to the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay. Joint runners up were the Rotary Clubs of Perth and Scarborough.

The Best Country Club Bulletin was awarded to the Rotary Club of Geraldton and the runner up was the Rotary Club of Geraldton-Greenough.

The award for Best Attendance at District Conference 2011, based on a proportion of Club membership, went to the Rotary Club of Corrigin.

Congratulations again to those individuals and Clubs.

ShelterBox as a Multi-District Supported ProjectThe District Business Session d u r i n g C o n f e r e n c e considered a proposition that District 9455 join other Australian Districts that were to establish ShelterBox Australia as a Multi-District Supported Project. The papers had not been distributed with sufficient notice to call for a formal vote on the proposal but the matter was discussed. Although one member raised a few questions about the proposal, there appeared to be clear support to take the proposal to an electronic ballot. This will be done in the near future.

District By-LawsA set of draft District By-Laws was also considered by the Business Session during Conference. Although a couple of minor points were clarified, there appeared to be no objection to the draft By-Laws. A notice will be distributed shortly indicating how the introduction of By-Laws will be introduced.
