Kevin Roberts, Corning, IA“The feedlot buyer that purchases my calves each year said last year’s calves by Loonan bulls pro-duced the highest premium ($76/per head) he has ever received on the grid. They were sired by Loonan Simmental (Earthquake) X Red Angus-cross bulls used on my black cows. When I sold in

December, they averaged 850 lb., 105 lb. heavier than my black Angus-sired calves.

“I saved heifers and when I preg checked this October, they weighed over 1100 lb. coming right off grass.

“I bought three more purebred Earthquake sons to use this year.”

NOTE: Loonan Simmentals are bred to add weaning weight, muscling and yield grad to calves out of English-bred cows.

Loonan Genetics Continue To Dominate Iowa Carcass Contests2006 Iowa State Fair

4-H Beef of Merit Champion Carcass

Joe Blankenship won both Window A (high cut-ability grid) and Window B (high quality grid). This is only the second time in Iowa State Fair history a steer has won both A and B windows!

The winning steer was produced by the Dean Bauer family, Exira, IA, long-time Loonan bull customers. Bauer sons Michael and Brian had dominated the state carcass contest until they were too old to compete.

Sixty-nine steers from 4-H members throughout Iowa competed in the 2006 state contest which has strict standards regarding rate of gain, quality and yield grade, carcass weight

and dollars produced per days on feed. Specs on the winning Blankenship Simmental x Red Angus-cross steer were:

3.79# ADG, 873# Carcass Weight, 65.6% Dressing Percentage, 14.4” Ribeye, 0.3” Back Fat2.4 Yield Grade, Choice Quality Grade, 66.3% Retail Product, $3.55 Added Per Day on Feed

We are proud of the fact Loonan genetics produces consistent carcass profit champions at county and state while competing with all other breeding programs in the state.

We want to congratulate the Bauer and Blankenship families for their outstanding breeding and feeding programs.

When individual identification and traceability become a reality, we expect commercial producers with Loonan bulls to benefit financially. We are already getting many reports from Loonan-sired calves bringing market premiums and creating repeat customers. Several producers have mentioned that when the auctioneer announces, “These calves are by Loonan bulls,” the market picks up.

USDA Approved Red Angus Tag Program Adds Age Verification1. Source verification to ranch of origin continues

2. Angus parentage verification continues

3. Age verification for first group calf born is added. This qualifies the group for premiums associated with tag docu-mentation.

Visual and EID tags are under new regulations

• Cattle must be tagged before the animal leave the ranch of origin.

• Customers will no longer be able to purchase “Red Angus Certified” tags through Loonan Stock Farm. Purchase tags by calling Ann at the Red Angus Association of Ameri-ca office, 940-387-3502, and answer a few brief questions.

• Please allow a little extra time for tag delivery.

Blake Angell, Meyer Natural Angus BeefBlake Angell, long-time commercial marketing director for the Red Angus Association of America has resigned to accept a position with Meyer Natural Angus Beef. Blake is familiar with our area and our cattle as he attended several Loonan sales and several Massena Red Angus Sales.

In his new position, Blake says he will be in the position of a buyer of Red Angus feeder and fed cattle as Meyer moves to expand their business and their use of Red Angus cattle. Meyer procurement reportedly results in added value of $25 to $50 per head on calves and $100 to $150 per head on fed cattle.

The Meyer program requires at least 50% Red or black Angus cattle, no growth hormones, no antibiotics, no feed grade growth promotants, animal protein-free diet, but encourages the use of biological vaccines.

Blake says to contact him if you are interested.Blake’s Cell: 785-410-3750Blake’s E-Mail: [email protected] Natural Angus Beef: 800-856-6799

SF EARTHQUAKE K282

The 2006 American Simmental Association Sire Summary confirms why Earthquake produces such outstanding results in commercial herds. It is rare for a bull to achieve trait-leader status in the antagonistic traits of light birthweight and yearling weight, then top it off as a leading carcass bull.

Facts support the results!

Earthquake – Facts, Not Hype, Prove His Merit

The American Simmental Association has a new All Purpose Index (API) putting a dollar value on a sire where heifer progeny are retained and the balance fed and sold on the grad and yield.

API Earthquake, at 115, ranks in the top 2% of the breed.

TI This index is used as a Terminal Sire. Earthquake ranks in the top 2% of the breed. The sire summary says, “Comparing a bull with a 115 index with a breed-average bull at 89 index results in a difference of 26 X 30 calves per year X four years = $3120. This bull is worth more than the breed average bull.”

Perhaps the most impressive fact in the Earthquake data is

the fact that, though he is so outstanding in several traits, he is above average in all traits.

Here’s the rest of the story ...

The 2006 Loonan opening day sale was topped at $6900 for an outstanding Earthquake son. The winning bid was from a Missouri producer who has topped the Missouri Heifer Futurity with Loonan genetics. The contending bidder was a long-time Iowa producer whose calves have consistently won Iowa State Fair carcass contests with Loonan genetics. A good selection of Earthquake sons also sold that day in the $1800 to $3600 range.

We have turned down several requests for Earthquake semen, however, on February 3, 2007, we will offer a good selection of profit-producing Earthquake sons.
