After winning the first two games of the season, the Cobbers lost at regionallyranked UCSanta Cruz 40 on Monday and then dropped their MIAC opener 31 at St. Thomas on Wednesday. Today’s game also marks the home opener for the Cobbers in 2006. Last year Concordia was 170 at home with their lone win coming in the second home game of the year against St. Scholastica. Concordia is 46 in the last ten home openers. In that time, the Cobbers have opened with the Gusties three times and have a 12 mark. The last time CC opened with Gustavus was back in 2004 when the Gusties won 20. The last time Concordia won a home opener was back in 2003 when CC beat the University of Mary (N.D.) 21. Concordia was supposed to play two games in California but a scheduling mixup by Bethany forced the Cobbers to cancel their game on Saturday against Bethany. The Concordia men’s soccer team started the season 20 for the first time since the 2003 season. The Cobbers defeated Concordia University (Wis.) 21 and then downed the University of Mary (N.D.) 2 1 in a game shortened by lightning to claim the championship of the St. John’s Tournament. After allowing 69 goals in 16 games last season (4.31/game), Concordia opened the year by only allowing a single goal in both openingweekend contests. That feat duplicates the total from 2005 when the Cobbers allowed less than two goals in only two games. Cobber junior forward Brandon Root returned to the lineup for the Cobbers’ and promptly scored the winning goal in the team’s first win of the year. Root, who took a year off in 2005, helped set up the first goal in the team’s 21 win over Concordia University and then scored the gamewinner at the 57:47 mark. Root has led the team in scoring in each of the two years he has competed for the Cobbers. After today’s game, Concordia will have a week off before taking on St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn. next Saturday. The Cobbers’ next home game is Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they host Hamline at 4 p.m. GUSTIE GOALS: (season preview courtesy of Gustavus SID) Gustavus enters today’s game with a 401 record. After tying their first game of the season, the Gusties rattled off four straight wins including Wednesday’s MIAC opener against Carleton. The Gustavus men’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with wins over Simpson (30) and Nebraska Wesleyan (30) last weekend. Coach Larry Zelenz’s squad, which is currently 301, has recorded three shutouts in four matches and have outscored its opponent’s 81. Senior leadership has been the key to the Gusties fast start as midfielder Matt Broin has tallied six points on three goals, forward Alex Groth has contributed six points on two goals and two assists, and goalkeeper Tyler Garry (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) has recorded two shutouts in four games with a 0.24 goals against average. Gustavus is coming off a dream season in 2005 in which they went all the way to the NCAA Tournament championship game where they lost to Messiah 10. It was the first time an MIAC men’s soccer team had ever reached the Final Four of the Division III playoffs. For his efforts, Gustie head coach Larry Zelenz was named the National Coach of the Year. It’s just nice for the Gameday staff to be able to say that we knew him way back before he was a legend!!!

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP Concordia gave up two goals in the first half and one in the second against St. Thomas and lost 31 in the MIAC opener for both teams.

The loss drops the Cobbers' season record to 22 after starting the season at 20. St. Thomas moves to 31.

The game was decided in the 29th minute of the first half. After the Tommies had scored the initial goal of the game at the 27:00 mark, they were able to add another just two minutes later. The Tommies tacked on their final goal in the 65th minute.

Concordia was able to get one back in the 74th minute when junior Kwaku Opoku finished off a pass from Caleb Husmann to pull the Cobbers to within 31.

For the game, St. Thomas outshot the Cobbers 2210 and held an 115 advantage in corner kicks.

Concordia goalie Mads Schmidt made three saves in the first half and four more in the second for a total of seven.

GUSTIE LAST GAME RECAP (Courtesy of the Gustavus SID) The Gustavus men's soccer team pulled out a 20 victory over Carleton College, Wednesday afternoon in St. Peter. The Gusties took a 10 early lead in the first half and then played exceptional defense the rest of the way. The second goal came with :23 seconds left to play on a Mike Butterworth breakaway. Gustavus extends its unbeaten streak to five games, and improves its record to 401, while getting its first win in MIAC play. The Knights fall to 23 overall and 01 in the MIAC.

In the first half, the Gusties got out to an early 10 lead when Matt Strom took a corner kick and put it in front of the net where a Carleton player knocked it in his own goal. Both teams extinguished each other's numerous scoring opportunities in the first half and Gustavus escaped with a 10 lead.

The scoring opportunities continued throughout the second half. The best chance for Gustavus came with over four minutes to play as Dan Suchy broke free down the side of the field with the ball. Suchy passed to Butterworth who was waiting in front of the net, however his kick went just wide of the net.

The game looked like it would end with the Gusties up by one but Butterworth was determined to get his first goal of the season. With 23 seconds left, Butterworth and a defender raced after a loose ball. Butterworth booted the ball into the air fooling the defender then he controlled the ball and beat the keeper for a 20 Gustavus win.

Tyler Garry saved four shots in the game for the Gusties. Ross Mattson stopped seven shots for the Knights. Gustavus outshot Carleton 1612 and led corner kicks, 93.

The Gusties are now 901 against Carleton in their last ten meetings. Gustavus holds an alltime mark of 2045 against the Knights.
