NEW CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT Fact Sheet 2: Community Benefits Fact “What are Community Benefits?” These are aims within the context of sustainability with the goal of building stronger communities, reducing social exclusion and poverty while developing the economy. They are designed to ensure that wider social and economic issues are taken into account when tendering construction, service or supply contracts, most notably in the public sector. They will become embedded in sustainable procurement processes when the Procurement Reform Bill passes through the Scottish Parliament. Recruitment and training opportunities are an example of such benefits arising from the New Campus NPD Project, as will fair trade and capacity building for SME’s and social enterprises. There are particular benefits identified for the College community such as employment and work experience opportunities alongside masterclasses, demonstration and live project scenarios. “Over what period will Benefits be delivered?”

Community benefits will not be a temporary initiative; they will be embedded in national and local Government procurement strategies for decades to come. In terms of the New Campus NPD Project, there are extensive commitments identified in the College’s Requirements and made by GLQ, the bulk of which will be honoured during the 3-year construction phase. However, the 25-year FM period also has a continuation of benefits through

employment and graduate opportunities. Academic benefits will also continue through supported learning and placement experiences for students.

“Can I get involved?”

Yes. A Community Benefits Working Group is being established which will contain key staff from the College and GLQ. Tasked with the aim of ensuring expectations are exceeded, the group will have representatives from each School.
