In April 1943 the US Government offered Army Post Office services to CASOC and BAPCO, Bahrain PetroleumCompany, for both company and civilian mail. The service started for incoming mail from the US in May 1943, butSudi Government agreement to use it for outgoing mail was not obtained until May 1943. Before the agreement withthe Saudi Government, between the outbreak of the war in 1939 28 CASOC covers, 7 of which were resistered,franked with Bahrain stamps sent via Bahrain to Baghdad and Basra all addressed to the US delegation in Iraq forfurther despatch to the US via APO 578 located in Basra. These covers included both company official and emplyeesmail. During the same period 26 covers bearing Saudi stamps prestamped and sold at the company canteen werehanded over to the Alkhobar post office cancelled and then handed back to the company agent to be transferred oncompany launch to Bahrain. Most of the Bahrain franked cover were larger and heavier than normal. They containedon to several letters and two with CASOC wax seals. The Saudi franked covers almost all had the franking of 14guerche and 1/8 hospital stamp to cover BOSC's air mail rate to Iraq. The bombing of Dhahran in October of 1940necessitated the need for confidential official reports through the US Legation in Iraq.

Prepared in Mecca and sent to Emir Faisal who was proclaimed King of Syria immediately after the withdrawal ofBritish troops from Damascus. The lower values with this handstamp were used sparingly in Damascus. Few highvalues remained unused. Dr. Kacsmarczyk illustrates this handstamp on page 63 and states that very few exist on the market. These Ottoman Land Registration stamps were also overprinted for use as postage listed under "Turkey inAsia 1920" in Scott.

The flight was made by American aviator William Knox Martin on June 18, 1919. On this occasion, 200 examples of2¢ stamps were overprinted at Barranquilla Printing Office. This was executed in horizontal strips of ten, which weresevered with a guillotine knife, causing horizontal perforations to have a "cut" appearance. Of the total stamps issued, only 160 were used on covers on the special flight.
