July 2013

August 2013 From the Desk of the Administrator – Michael R. Chies Here we are already heading towards the end of the summer. With the late spring, it seemed like the summer just got here. As a youngster, I really enjoyed the long summer vacations from school. Growing old is something that gradually happens to all of us. Many of us can remember our Senior Year in high school. Especially the last few months, just waiting to be done with school. I can remember looking up at the clock and wish I could speed it up because I was ready for the next phase in my life. Once out of high school, it quickly became apparent that time continues to move on by and forty years later when I turned 60, you quickly realize just how fast time actually goes by. No, we cannot stop or slow down time. I have learned to enjoy each and every day, even if it is a “bad day”. Many Countries around the world are experiencing an “aging population” that is effecting all aspects of society. In the USA, our population boom came after World War ll, when all the GI’s came back, got married, started business’s and began having kids. That produced the “baby boom” generation which we are all seeing around us as we go out and about. This large population bubble has affected our Country in many different ways from the time they were kids till they grow in the later years. We can see this population bubble as the number of people getting older is growing at an explosive rate in this Country. We see it in increasing costs as taxpayers with increasing spending in the various Health and Human Service Departments across the Country. Taxpayers are revolting and the end result is a chronic underfunding of senior health services in this Country. Yet the number of people growing older is accelerating at a unprecedented rate. Our health care systems are changing as everyone should be aware of at this point. What they will change into is still unknown. Sure, lots of ideas have been popping up, but the jury is still out at this point in time. In an attempt to slow the growth of nursing home admissions, we have seen the growth of the Assisted Living market. The public likes the word “Assisted Living” much better than the word “nursing home”. And in many cases, Private Pay Assisted Living can provide an environment that is NOT as financially restricted as Minnesota Skilled Nursing Facilities, (nursing homes) must live under. In addition they do not have the level of oversight and inspections that Skilled Nursing Facilities have. When money is not an issue the sky is the limit. The concept behind Assisted Living is to provide a less costly environment for people that have lesser needs. However, the reality is that once people move in, they really don’t want to move out, even if their health needs have grown. Many Assisted Living providers have come in from the Hospitality background, (hotels), and do not have the experience to deal with an aging population that needs higher level of services. As a direct result, we are seeing more complaints and issues coming from Assisted Living facilities. Today’s Assisted Living Facilities are for all intent and purposes, unlicensed nursing homes and it is my belief that will change. At the New Brighton Care Center, we offer Skilled Short Term Care, Long Term Care, and Assisted Living. Our Senior Suites Assisted Living units are spacious, reasonably priced, we use the SAME staff as in the nursing home section and we utilize our expertise in Skilled Nursing Care for services to our Senior Suite residents. Our five units have been filled for the last year and a half, and we JUST learned that one of our units will be opening up soon. If you know of anyone needing Assisted Living Services, have them give us a call. Enjoy the month of August.
