IIT MadrasIIT Madras is one of India’s most prestigiousuniversities and has an excellent track recordin producing high quality engineers andresearchers.

Through the years, the institute has played apivotal role in creating an entrepreneurialenvironment that motivates students toinnovate and develop solutions for local aswell as global challenges. Students fromvarious disciplines of Engineering, Sciencesand Humanities, come together in anunparalleled display of diversity of thought, and skill to create this environment.

Standing as a tall testament to this environment is Centre for Innovation – a student run innovation lab that was initiated with the support of the Alumni of 1981 Batch. With 10clubs functioning as part of CFI, it contributes to a wide spectrumof fields ranging from Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering toniche areas like Biotechnology and 3D Printing. CFI has beensuccessful in inculcating the spirit of engineering in students overthe past few years.

About the Team

Team Anveshak, one of the flagship teams of

CFI, represents IIT Madras in the Rover ChallengeSeries- a highly advanced international robotics competition

conducted annually for University students, by the Mars Society.

Started in November 2015, Team Anveshak was built on the strength ofstudents who had earlier participated in and won several nationalcompetitions such as Robocon (2004 - 2014), ASME (2015) and Inter IIT Techmeet (2015 and 2016), besides developing projects as a part of the iBot club.

With a flexible yet clearly defined team structureand a very lucid vision, Team Anveshak has beensuccessful in building a platform for discussion onRobotics through its association with iBot club, and wishes to create a similar forum for space andplanetary exploration at IIT Madras, in the years tocome.

The team has made astounding progress indeveloping the rover - christened Aurora - in avery short time frame through sheer grit andperseverance, qualifying for European RoverChallenge 2016 on our first attempt and for theUniversity Rover Challenge 2017, on thesecond, under the supervision of Professor TAsokan and Professor B Ravindran of IIT Madras.

About Rover Challenge SeriesThe Rover Challenge Series is a set of 3 Challenges held by theMars Society to engage University students to design the nextgeneration rovers capable of working alongside astronauts on theRed planet.

University Rover Challenge(URC), European Rover Challenge(ERC)and United Kingdom University Rover Challenge (UK URC) togethercomprise the Rover Challenge series.

The University Rover Challenge spread over three days, tests themechanical and electronic capabilities of the rover, as

student teams battle it out in Autonomous Traversal,Extreme Retrieval and Delivery, Equipment

Servicing and Science Cache Tasks.

Chassis and Suspension

Team Anveshak has designed a robustchassis combining a Rocker-BogieSuspension system and an articulationjoint, to increase the rover’s capability ofmanoeuvring on rough, uneven terrain. The rover’s ability to encounter harshdrops makes it stand out from the otherrovers. Autodesk Fusion 360TM has beenused for design and analysis of the rovercomponents.

Manipulator and Gripper

The Robotic manipulator has been designedto run using a mixture of rotary and linearactuators and transmission components, witha detailed emphasis on part placement, foroptimum distribution of load on the chassis. The end of the manipulator has beendesigned for modularity - either the gripper orthe digger can be attached to the manipulatorbased on the task at hand.

A digger has been designedwhich is capable ofperforming 3 tasks - soilextraction, soil collectionand soil testing. Aurora, iscapable of identifying sitefor soil collection and doingon-board testing of the soilas well as storing the soilfor further testing.

Digger and Science Task

Electronics

This involves both Main controller board, which interfaces the on-board computerwith the electronics on the rover, as wellas a battery management system boardwhich caters the power needs of all therover electronics and provides the userwith a battery level feedback. The teamhas printed its custom PCBs according toits needs.

Software

Autonomous traversal is addressed by usingthe combination of data from GPS sensor, IMUand Lidar. The team has developed robustcontrol algorithms for operating the rover.

The communications sub-divisionhandles the long range communication usingpowerful wireless routers and high gainantennae. Non-LOS low latency videotransmission is one of the key challenges.

The sponsorship and PR teamworks in sync with thetechnical modules to interactwith industries to acquireCorporate sponsorship, helpsthem to conduct recruitmentdrive and maintain the team’sonline presence.

The media team is engaged inoverseeing the team’s designneeds and generation ofcreative content.

Future Scope

Enhancements in the rover’sdesign can make it ideal for

Defence adaptations due to its ability tomanoeuver on harsh terrains autonomously.

The current design with its robust remote control, can be used inDisaster Management applications, such as in case of earthquakes.

In terms of Autonomous capabilities, Team Anveshak believes that withsufficient support, the team can delve into the realm of Virtual Robotics.
