John Randolph Foundation and our outstanding partners are investing in bright futures and building healthy communities one swim lesson, afterschool run, and tennis match at a time.

By providing grants to three nonprofi ts - SwimRVA, Sports Backers, and Quickstart Tennis of Central Virginia – and collaborating with local government and local schools, we are leveraging resources and attracting well-established, top-notch youth programs to our community.

Our new grantees share a common goal of improving children’s health and inspiring young people to equate fun with fi tness. Here are three ways our partners are working with youth – in the water, on the roads, and on the courts.

SwimRVA is a nonprofi t working to drownproof the capital region by increasing access to water safety and aquatic fi tness.

Recently, SwimRVA launched a learn-to-swim program for every second grader in Hopewell.

The program’s design, direction, and initial successes are a result of powerful planning and collaboration between SwimRVA, Hopewell City Public Schools, Hopewell Recreation and Parks, and John Randolph Foundation.

“Our goal is to ensure that all students in Hopewell City Public Schools are water safe” says Adam Kennedy, Executive Director of SwimRVA. “Hopewell is a tremendous river city, and we envision a future where more residents safely enjoy the Appomattox River and access the pool at the Hopewell Community Center. John Randolph Foundation has garnered tremendous energy toward increasing physical activity and creating a more vibrant, active and healthy Tri-Cities community.”

Avenue 10k. This year Sports Backers partnered with the Richmond Road Runners and John Randolph Foundation to start a Kids Run RVA Run Club in the Davisville Community of Hopewell.

The Davisville Community Run Club, known as “The Fireballs”, is led by volunteer coaches who provide mentorship while instilling a love for physical activity. Sports Backers believes every child deserves access to physical activity and places special focus on low-income and Title 1 schools where the childhood obesity epidemic hits poorer neighborhoods in greater proportions.

“If we can get children moving consistently at a younger age, we hope that this will lead to a more active lifestyle as they move into adolescence and adulthood” says Faith Hecht, Youth Programs Manager at Sports Backers.

Sports Backers plans to expand Run Clubs to all Hopewell elementary schools this year.

Quickstart tennis is a new, kid-sized tennis format to help children learn and play the game of tennis. Quickstart Tennis of Central Virginia, founded by Lynda Harrill, is implementing their signature program, Supercharge School

Tennis, in Hopewell Public Schools by outfi tting them with the equipment and working knowledge needed to teach tennis.

“Our mission is to create happy, healthy, and active kids, to promote tennis as a lifelong sport, and to help combat childhood obesity” says Ms. Harrill.

In 2015, the United States Tennis Association trained physical education teachers in Hopewell at no cost to the schools, ensuring that well-informed instructors are ready to teach the quickstart tennis program to their students. The Supercharge School Tennis program in Hopewell was made possible by a grant from the fall 2014 grant cycle in the amount of $5,800.

In her lifetime, Trudy Bogese was a tremendous force for good who invested greatly in her community. When her daughter and son-in-law, B.J. and Chuck Patton, established an endowment in her memory, they ensured her legacy would be carried on for generations to come.

This year, the Trudy Bogese Endowment for Youth Development awarded its fi rst scholarships to eight students at J.E.J. Moore Middle School and N.B. Clements Junior High School. The scholarships enabled them to attend a variety of enriching summer camp programs.

• Emma Davis - World Strides Summer Program

• Madeline Everhart - Wolfpack Swimming Camp

• Christopher Ganoe - Swift Creek Mill Theater Summer Performance Camp

• Brandon Humphrey - Will Wade Basketball Camp

• Glen Meza - The Theater Company at Fort Lee Summer Theater Camp

• Alexandra Moore - World Strides Summer Program

• Jonathan Reed - Prince George Recreation & Park Basketball Camp and Reggie Williams Basketball Camp

• Kylie Van Elsacker - The Jink & Diddle School of Scottish Fiddling

Spotlight Board of Trustees

The John Randolph Foundation Board of Trustees is excited to welcome our newest Trustee, Brad Kaufman.

A lifelong resident of Hopewell, Mr. Kaufman is a 1973 graduate of Hopewell High School, and a 1978 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Business Administration. His education prepared him well for his 35 year career in the banking industry where he spent the bulk of that time managing SunTrust Bank in Hopewell.

Mr. Kaufman has volunteered with many local organizations including the Hopewell Emergency Crew, Hopewell/Prince George Crime Solvers, and the Industrial Authority of Hopewell. He has coached baseball in Hopewell from T-Ball to the Youth Travel Team and has spent countless hours

volunteering for Hopewell City Public Schools. Mr. Kaufman attends First Baptist Church in Hopewell where he is currently involved in YAPA, the Youth Academy for Performing Arts.

“What really impressed me about the Foundation was their commitment to make a difference in the community by improving the quality of life for children in the Tri-Cities area” says Mr. Kaufman. “Children are our future and providing them with quality opportunities to improve their lives will have a positive impact for our community for years to come.”

We are so grateful to Ms. Linda Hyslop for her nine years of service to John Randolph Foundation. Ms. Hyslop most recently served as the President of the Board of Trustees as well as the Chairperson of the Grants Committee, and she will remain involved as an Advisor to the Youth Development Committee.

Ms. Hyslop will tell you that she is a Hopewellian by choice, not by chance. Her family moved to the area when she was 16. After graduating from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, she had only one interview - a teaching position with Woodlawn Elementary School in Hopewell.

That teaching position started her on a path of more than 30 years of service to Hopewell City Public Schools as the Assistant Principal and Principal of Woodlawn Elementary School, an Elementary and Reading Supervisor for Hopewell City Public Schools, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in Hopewell, and Division Liaison for the Virginia Department of Education and the College of William and Mary. Most recently, she was the Executive Director of the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Ms. Hyslop currently volunteers as a board member on the John Tyler Community College Board, the Hopewell School Board, the Hopewell Emergency Crew Board, and the Hopewell Downtown Partnership Board. She is a member of the Hopewell Rotary Club, the Hopewell-Prince George Crime Solvers Association, the State Charter School Committee, and she is Clerk of the Session at First Presbyterian Church in Hopewell.

In addition to holding a bachelor’s from Tulane, Ms. Hyslop holds a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education from Virginia State College.

Welcome to Brad Kaufman

Thanks to Linda Hyslop

Building charitable giving into your estate plan is a wonderful way to leave a meaningful legacy -and it’s not just for the very wealthy. In fact, 60% of bequest donors have annual incomes of less than $75,000 a year (MORI Survey, Planned Giving, 2003).

Create your legacy by including John Randolph Foundation in your will or living

trust, or take advantage of a charitable giving option that provides for your loved ones while reducing taxes and supports the Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life in Hopewell and the surrounding areas.

We encourage you to talk to your financial advisor about the following planned giving options:

1. Make an outright gift in your will - the simplest option.

2. Donate your retirement assets.3. Designate John Randolph Foundation as your life

insurance beneficiary.4. Make a planned gift with appreciate stock.5. Make a life income gift that turns your property into

a donation while enhancing your income. • Charitable remainder trust • Charitable lead trust • Charitable gift annuity • Pooled income fund

YouthFest Kicks Off Summer BreakIn its first year YouthFest kicked off the start of summer with a crowd of over 300 on Saturday, May 30, 2015. The outdoor festival held at First Baptist Church in Hopewell was a partnership between John Randolph Foundation, Hopewell Recreation and Parks, Hopewell Police, and Keep Hopewell Beautiful. A highlight of the day was motivational speaker Rohan Murphy, an American Paralympian and wrestler who

was featured in Nike’s “No Excuses” campaign. YouthFest attendees also enjoyed free music, food, games, a fire truck demonstration, summer camp expo, face painting, moonwalks, and bounce houses - just to name a few of the activities! Plans are underway for next year’s YouthFest.

For more information contact YB Thompson, Youth Network Officer at the John Randolph Foundation, at 458-2239.

Rohan Murphy, Pro Athlete, inspired the audience with

his personal story.
