QCV – Year Three QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia, Inc. (QCV) is a Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that operates as a special-purpose Community Tennis Association (CTA) focused on QuickStart Tennis, the USTA’s “play to learn” format developed for kids 10 and under, but adaptable for beginners of any age. Unlike other CTAs, which offer a variety of programs in a limited geographic area, QCV promotes, develops and grows only QuickStart in a wide geographic area in Central Virginia.

Jump Start QuickStart Tennis, QCV’s primary initiative, has introduced QuickStart Tennis into schools, parks & recreation departments and other youth-based organizations that have committed to teaching QuickStart. QCV trains, equips and supports QuickStart programming. QCV has trained over 1,000 individuals to date. In June 2012, QCV created a special workshop and trained the Albemarle County summer school after-school program instructors to run the USTA’s new Kids’ Tennis Club format for 500 kids. Completion of the annual training blitz in August 2012, which included sessions for Amelia, Halifax and Prince Edward counties, meant that all 22 counties in the QCV service area have now been trained.

QCV’s original goal for Jump Start was to get QuickStart up and running in 116 public elementary and middle schools (55,000 kids) in 21 counties and the City of Charlottesville. Earlier this year, QCV added Halifax County with eight public schools to its service area. As of August 31, 2012, 113 of the 124 schools (91 percent) had committed to teaching QuickStart, up from 92 schools at last year-end. Only seven elementary and four middle schools remain. In less than four years, Jump Start has gone from one pilot school in Albemarle County to a total of 132 schools, including ten high schools and nine private schools, in 22 counties and the City of Charlottesville, making it possible for over 63,000 kids to learn to play in school and in after-school QuickStart tennis programs. QCV also works with nine parks & recreation

departments, three YMCAs, two Boys & Girls Clubs and three Head Start agencies with 400 Head Start kids (ages three and four).

QCV made equipment grants totaling over $16,000 this fiscal year to support QuickStart programming at schools, parks & recreation departments, Head Start and several other youth-centric organizations. USTA/Mid-Atlantic Diversity & Inclusion Committee and SHEETZ again stepped up to help QCV fund these equipment grants.

QCV’s Go Bananas for QuickStart! campaign, which uses tennis players as nutritional role models for kids, continued to grow in popularity and has reached over 3,000 kids since inception. QCV was invited to spread the Go Bananas! message in PE classes, family-fitness nights, fun fairs, back-to-school nights and other events at schools. QCV also participated in the Junior League’s annual Kids in the Kitchen event and Charlottesville Family Magazine’s Family FUN Fair and Expo and visited after-school QuickStart programs. QCV created additional Go Bananas! cards this year for Milk, Peaches, Oranges, Salads and Brushing & Flossing. The Junior League of Charlottesville awarded QCV another grant in support of Go Bananas! during the year.

QuickStart PRO, on the drawing board a year ago, became a reality with 2012 summer-school QuickStart programs in Buckingham and Cumberland counties where over 200 kids learned to play tennis as part of the summer-school curriculum. A Longwood University education major was a QuickStart PRO in Buckingham County and lived with the family of the principal of the primary school. In January, that school became QCV’s first National Junior Tennis & Learning chapter at an elementary school. QCV partnered with Longwood to identify instructor candidates and held a QuickStart Workshop on campus to train potential QuickStart “pros.” QCV partners with public schools to find instructors and funding

for summer-school programming. QCV also continued to develop and promote programs offered by independent tennis professionals as part of QuickStart PRO. A steady supply of tennis-teaching resources still needs to be developed for the counties served by QCV.

QuickStart Head Start was in full swing with the addition of four sites (nine classrooms) in Orange County in October 2011.

STEP UP for QuickStart! volunteers helped with the fifth annual QuickStart Tennis Day at Darden Towe Park in May 2012 and with after-school QuickStart programs and out-of-school programming. QuickStart volunteer Bobbye Davies started a very successful program at the Boys & Girls Club in Orange County.

Neighborhood QuickStart continued to expand in Albemarle County with Still Meadow joining Fontana and Peacock Hill with QuickStart Tennis for neighborhood kids, taught on courts in the community.

QCV’s Grow Veggies for QuickStart! pilot program, which was successfully completed last fiscal year with tennis gardens at five schools, was followed this year by QCV’s helping Henley Middle School obtain grants of over $20,000 for construction of a greenhouse for its “Hornets N.E.S.T.” outdoor classroom. Other Grow Veggies activities were put on hold this year as QCV time and energies were needed for Bring Tennis Back to the Park! QCV plans to restart Grow Veggies in its next fiscal year.

Bring Tennis Back to the Park! is QCV’s collaboration with Claudius Crozet Park in a major two-phase project to return tennis to the 55-year-old nonprofit recreation facility in western Albemarle County. Phase One was completed In June 2012, with construction of three 36-foot QuickStart Tennis courts. The $56,000 cost was funded by the generosity of the USTA 10 and Under Tennis Target Market Initiative, Bama Works Fund of the Dave Matthews Band, Community Endowment of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, Inez Duff Bishop Trust, Perry Foundation and Martin Marietta Materials. Phase One also

included the dedication and countless hours of hard work from Amanda Farmer, Alan Franklin and Kelly Strickland on behalf of the Park, as well as Herb Osburn of Tennis Courts, Inc., which exceeded all expectations by having the courts ready by the end of June. Special Olympics tennis standout and long-time Crozet resident John Fried did the honors at the ribbon cutting, and QuickStart programming began on the new courts in early August.

Bring Tennis Back to the Park! now has moved into fundraising for Phase Two – two full-size tennis courts with 60-foot court blended lines for QuickStart kids ages nine and 10.

To point parents in the right direction for tennis for kids, QCV created QuickStart Pathway Pointer, a website-based tool to direct parents to the age-appropriate information about kid-sized equipment, court sizes and available programming. QuickStart Pathway Pointer has received rave reviews from parents, organizers and program providers.

With attainment of its Jump Start goal in sight, QCV launched its latest initiative, QuickStart Pathway Builder. This concept combines, under one umbrella, USTA 10 and Under programming formats, Jump Start, Go Bananas!, Grow Veggies!, STEP UP! and QuickStart PRO to create an all-inclusive approach that will build a pathway of in-school, after-school and out-of-school QuickStart programming in each QCV county. QuickStart Pathway Builder combines physical activity and the development of tennis skills with nutritional information and a hands-on growing experience, all accomplished in the FUN QuickStart way. FUN is what it’s all about!

QCV had a wonderfully constructive third year with two major milestones – QuickStart in all 22 counties and the completion of the 36-foot courts at Crozet Park. We look forward to our next fiscal year and getting more kids on the QuickStart Pathway.
