Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

Miss S.Butcher - KC Class Teacher

KB are working hard on their ‘Dazzling Descriptions’ this term in our writing unit. We have been brainstorming lots of adjectives to describe the characters in our shared reading books. This week, we read ‘The Silliest Scarecrow’. We worked in pairs to think of as many adjectives to describe the scarecrow at the end of the story. Here are some of our responses.

“The scarecrow is yellow and made from straw. He is tall like a tree. The scarecrow is funny and has white smelly socks on his hands.”Jarrah B

“He looks skinny and brown. The scarecrow is very silly and has a brown hat on wrapped with a yellow tie to scare the birds.”Harry W

We are looking forward to continuing our descriptive writing this term.

2J have been enjoying themselves way too much in art class. We have learnt about the history of Indigenous elders and how creative they were with their dot art paintings. We were inspired so much that we not only created our own masterpieces, but we also collaborated to create a joint class artwork to be framed and put on display in the classroom.

Miss D. Nero - 5N Class TeacherMr W. MacInnes - 4M Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)Buddies with KM5N have enjoyed spending the last two terms getting to know their Kindergarten buddies. During a recent visit, 5N helped their buddies revise their sight words. They created a find-a-word using their sight words and swapped their worksheet with another student to try to find the words. As you can see from the photos below, all students were extremely focused throughout the activity!

Another year in 4M means another year of ‘4M Survivor’ (like the TV show). Each week, students compete in ‘tribes’ in either an ‘immunity’ or ‘reward’ challenge, comprising of physical and/or mental tasks. The losing tribe is sent to ‘tribal council’, where they consider who contributed the most to the tribe, showed good sportsmanship and demonstrated good leadership skills.

Our challenge last week was much trickier than it sounded. Inspired by the upcoming Athletics Carnival, students did a relay with a twist. Rather than passing a baton between the tribe members, each student had to complete a task - balancing a ping pong ball on a racquet, or dribbling a basketball or a rugby ball using only your head!

Netball Reports Week 2 2019B TeamWe got off the bus hyped-up in the hot 20 degrees winter day, with the intention of doing our best and possibly winning. We started well with great intercepts and passes. At half time, the score was 6-3 their way. We came back quickly with heart. Soon the score was 7-all, then 11-all. We started to get fired up and both teams had no reserves. Then our tiredness got the better of us and they swooped in, scoring 2 goals, making the score 13-11. Two things we could definitely work on was our contact (3 ft away) and keeping a positive attitude whether the umpire is harsh or not. Special mention to Laurel W and Emily C for being flexible with positions. Player of the match goes to Laci W (6P) for her excellent intercepts and passes. In the end, we had a great, close game.Written by Captain Evie M (6K)

C TeamWe had a rocky start, Lane Cove were speeding around the court. They had the upper hand and were leading by four points, leaving us with only two points going into the second half. We all knew though, that in the second half we would conquer the court, and we were right. We were as fast as lightning. Bam! The goals just kept on coming! Eight in a row! We had a triumphant victory, 15-9 our way. Special mentions to Cecilia L (6M) for her incredible defence, Shinna T (6P), and Penny L (6M) for their much appreciated help of playing up to replace our injured players. The player of the match goes to Eliza A (6M) for her amazing shooting, passing and getting into space. The C Team needs to work on their lobs. Overall, we played a valiant game. We tried really hard and we had a great win.Written by Captain Caitlin M (6F)

D1 TeamThe whistle pierced through the air like a speeding bullet. On Friday, we faced the tough opposition of Northbridge. We tried our hardest throughout the game and the end score was 9-8 their way. Special mentions to Yukimi N (6S) for stepping up to help in the second half. Francoise B (6F) also gets a special mention for her amazing playing. The player of the match goes to Abbey M (6K) for her great sportsmanship. Next time, we could work on our lobs. Overall, we did very well. Well done D1 team.Written by Captain Sophie Hawkins (6M)

D2 TeamOn Friday, Neutral Bay D2 Team played Cammeray Public School. They played really well. The score was 2-1 to Neutral Bay. Everybody played amazingly well. The player of the match has to go to Audrey T (6M) for her flawless defence. She played GD and GK. Even though we played really well, I think we should work on sticking to our players.Written by Captain Sally Moreton (6F)

E TeamOn Friday, the E Team really tried their hardest, but in the end Castle Cove won 8-3. Everyone put in a spectacular effort and we saw some amazing saves. Special mention to Chelsea H (5T) for some great defence, and Annie T (6M) for stepping up and shooting some fabulous goals. The player of the match has to go to Mia B (6P) for trying her best at her positions and doing really well at them even though they aren’t her best. Mia also managed to mark her player really well. We have certainly improved a lot on not stepping, but we do need to work on our defence. Overall, we still played really well, even though we had two players away.Written by Captain Megan V (6M)

Boys TeamOn Friday, our opposition was Willoughby and their faces looked as though they wanted to win. Our team started with a few quick buckets and the total score at half time was 10-2 our way. The second half didn’t turn out as well as the first. The end score was 13-3 our way. Player of the match goes to Ziyue C (6M) for ending the game with three points.Written by Captain Bayley Chan (6S)

Science and TechnologyScientist of the Month

Each month we will be sharing interesting facts about a famous scientist. This month’s clues are below. If you think you can guess who it is, then email your answer to Mrs Keeling: [email protected]

Alternatively, you can pop your answer in the pink box inside the science room.

Scientist of the Month - August

Who am I?

• I was born 1815 and died in 1852. If I was alive today I would be 204 years old.

• My father is the famous poet Lord Byron. • From a very young age my mother insisted I be

tutored in both Mathematics and Science. It was uncommon for women to study these subjects when I was young.

• From a very early age I showed skill and talent for numbers and language.

• When I was 17 years old, Charles Babbage became my mentor. He is considered the father of the computer.

• I described how codes could be created for the device to handle letters and symbols along with numbers and theorized a method for the engine to repeat a series of instructions, a process known as looping that computer programs use today.

• I am considered to be the first ever computer programmer.

Fun Fact: Michael Faraday and Charles Dickens were good friends with my husband and I.
