2019 Program Graduates Honored at Luncheon

The Neuhaus Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program (DSPP) offers degreed individuals a comprehensive, informed approach to reading instruction and the knowledge to provide the instruction to dyslexic students in public and private schools and in clinical settings.

The Neuhaus program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA).

The preparation program includes the following requirements: 200 instructional hours in a structured, sequential program; 700 clinical/teaching hours under the supervision of a qualified instructor; 10 demonstration lessons of clinical work with an individual student or small group; and regular written documentation of a student’s progress.

The graduation ceremony was held before the luncheon in the Marriott Marquis Houston hotel. Friends, family, and mentors of the graduates were in attendance, as well as Neuhaus staff and board members. During the luncheon program the graduates were applauded for their achievements and the critical role they play in transforming the lives of students.

Neuhaus Experts Prominent on Texas Dyslexia Handbook Committee

The State Board of Education approved The Dyslexia Handbook, 2018 Update: Procedures Concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders, in November 2018. The update includes new chapters on universal screening for dyslexia and dysgraphia as well as other needed updates.

Two Neuhaus staff members served as Dyslexia Committee Members. Dr. Regina Boulware-Gooden served on both the Identification and Services Committee and the Dysgraphia Committee. Mary Yarus served on the Screening Committee. Thanks to these updates, more students should be identified and served in their public or charter school.

Internationally renowned cognitive scientist and professor of research and psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Mark

Seidenberg was the keynote speaker at the 2019 Lenox M. Reed seminar, hosted at The Briar Club. A full room of parents and educators listened to Dr. Graham Neuhaus’ thoughtful introduction before Seidenberg took the stage to share his insights. Meet Our Experts: Jeremy Creed

Jeremy Creed has worked at Neuhaus for 10 years and been a member of our instructional staff for eight of those years. We asked him a few questions about his role at Neuhaus:

What’s a day like in the life of Jeremy? I spend about 75% of my time on the road. This includes teaching, planning, preparing for needs of clients and classes, strategizing and organizing myself for delivery of services. I also coach clients on how to implement Neuhaus programs with fidelity and how best to overcome obstacles they encounter when implementing structured literacy instruction.

What is your “why” for working at Neuhaus? I am motivated to change the trajectories of people’s (which includes teachers, students, parents, administrators, school leaders, and adult learners) lives in a positive, literate way. I strive to plant seeds of change and growth by providing an example of infectious passion for others in learning to read, maintaining a flexibility to apply best research practices, and a resolve to demonstrate lifelong learning with a growth mindset.

Favorite book? I have many. One of my treasured books is Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. I feel we can learn so much about life by looking at it from a child’s perspective.

Teacher Uses Neuhaus Knowledge to Teach Students and Daughter

This month, Holly Upchurch and her family are travelling from Rice, TX, to Bellaire, TX, for their second consecutive summer to spend two weeks

at Neuhaus Education Center for her training in literacy instruction.

“It’s been a little bit of a sacrifice for us, but it is something that we are all passionate about. My husband is dyslexic, and my oldest daughter, Brylie, is dyslexic. My daughter is going to be dyslexic for the rest of her life, and I want to know what I can do to help her. My husband and I feel like the more training, the more information we can get, the better equipped we are to help her.”

For the past three years, Holly has been the dyslexia coordinator at Rice Independent School District in Rice, Texas (south of Dallas). She coordinates the dyslexia program, screens students for reading disorders, teaches the dyslexia intervention classes for grades 1-12, and works very closely with the diagnosticians. “It’s a lot, but I have no complaints because I love all my kids,” Holly said.

Because of her commitment, she is one of a select few awarded a scholarship to the Neuhaus Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program. The three-year program prepares teachers to take the Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) exam.

Holly has been using her new knowledge to provide intervention to students who struggle with reading and to teach her daughter, who was diagnosed in fourth grade at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas.

“My daughter doesn’t care if I share things. I’m real personable with my students. I share, ‘This is what my husband and my daughter go through. You might be dyslexic, but that is not going to stop you.’”

After using Neuhaus techniques with Brylie this past year, Holly says she is seeing great strides in her daughter’s progress. “She has just soared this year.” Next year, Holly is taking Brylie out of the school intervention program and will provide all of her reading intervention at home.

“The Neuhaus program really explains why the letters do the things they do and make the sounds they make. I like that it is so cohesive.” She says it helps her students internalize the letter-sound relationship. “They need something they can hold on to and understand, something that makes more sense.”

“Neuhaus has been a very good adventure; it is so good and in depth. It’s laid out in such a way that it’s easy for me to teach, and it’s easy for my kids to get it. I would love to go back to those first couple of years when I taught first grade with the information I have now and re-do them. I am very thankful that God brought Neuhaus into my life, not just for my district but especially for my daughter. It’s just been a good growing experience for us as a mom and daughter.”
