Her dry wit perhaps stems fromher roots in England, where shewas born in 1967, to an Englishfather and an American mother.“We moved to the US when I was achild,” she says. “My father camefor his work.”

With both her parents scientists,Morris “learned to questioneverything, to be very skeptical”.She carries two passports andalways felt a little displaced as a

art.” When she returned to NewYork, she won a coveted place onthe Whitney Museum of AmericanArt independent study programand began painting, while workingas an assistant to Jeff Koons.

In 1996 she held her first show, forthe influential White Cube galleryin London. “I packed a very bigsuitcase and ended up living [inLondon] for the next six years,” sheremembers. “It was the perfect cityto be in: the fashion world, the artworld and the music world were allin one place.”

“I do THINK that youcan have it all. Eventhose things that youdon’t NECESSARILY

WANT to have”

Morris says she is one of the fewcontemporary art stars who neverwent to art school. Does she regretit? “I’m not someone who looksback and wonders if I could havedone things differently,” she says.

F“The path I took was the path thatI had to take.”

or the past 12 years, Morrishas been based back in NewYork. She and her husband,

artist Liam Gillick, with whom shehas an 11-year-old son, Orson, divorced two years ago, at whichpoint she moved into the Rudolphapartment. A blank slate, I suggest.“Blindingly white,” she replies.

But it is not only her home thatreflects Morris’ stark aesthetic. Infashion, she prefers simplicityabove all. “I wear mainly black, ormidnight navy,” she says. “If I dowear color, it’s a very specificorange-red, yellow or cyan blue.”

Is she drawn to the digital printsthat have populated runways inrecent seasons, which echo thegeometry of her art? “There aredesigners who do amazing thingswith print, but it’s not for me,”Morris confesses. “They are toodistracting for my character. I like avery plain, color-coded closet.”

Her studio is in Long Island City,an area that has become a locus forartists who want more space

and light than Manhattan canoffer. In the evenings, she lovesto cook for friends – her circle isan eclectic group of artists, architects and film-world types, including the actress UmaThurman, whom she met “whenour sons became friends”.

Tomorrow, she will be back inher studio, pushing forward

with two films currently inproduction, as well as developingartwork for several shows in 2015.How does she juggle film, paintingand family? “I have a team at thestudio, and my galleries helpenormously with my projects,” sheexplains. “I do think you can haveit all. Even the things you don’tnecessarily want to have!”
