Hello Everyone,I hope you all had a good and enjoyable Christmas; I should like to takethis opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year.I would also like to thank all those who supported our recent AutumnFestival at Scarborough. Everyone enjoyed it very much. Our speakerAlan Colegrave gave a very interesting talk about his work and how heuses both video and AV in his productions. Sometimes he combines thetwo in one production which helps to convey the subject matter. The audience asked many questions. His talk provoked some very livelyconversation, especially amongst those who stayed on the Sunday night. As still and video cameras become better at producing both video andstill photographs I expect there will be others who will try to combinethe two.In my last chat I spoke about a questionnaire to see what your thoughtswere on the future of our regional spring and autumn festivals.Unfortunately the number of replies was very small, so I feel it does notgive a true picture of the opinion of the members in our region.Because of this I hope to have a discussion with members at this year’sspring festival prior or after the AGM.We have decided to try a different venue this year for the spring festivaland AGM. We will be holding it at the Village Hall in Aberford avillage just off junction 45 of the M1. Tickets and bookingarrangements will be announced in due course. Our speaker will beMike Shaw who some of you will know from the IAC website and NLEemail forums.Mike has won many awards and will prove a very interesting andentertaining speaker. As I said in the last issue we have re-launched our regions website atwww.neriac.co.uk, if you have anything about your club or forthcomingevents you would like adding to the website please let me know and ifyou would like it mentioning in this magazine please let the editorknow. We are always happy to promote club and inter club events. Alsowe do try to keep your club contact details up to date, they do seem tochange very often so please let us know of any changes as the occur. We always need to use these details when contacting clubs aboutregional events.Thank you for taking the time to read this magazine and I look forwardto seeing you at Aberford.

FROM THE EDITOR...... At my Club (Darlington) there was a suggestion that a download of a ‘lite’ versionof an otherwise expensive suite might interest members, one of whom later asked me ifit would be better than the one he was using; Adobe Première Elements 8. I said he wouldprobably be better off keeping the cash trousered because all editing systems operate onmuch the same formula, frequently changing the nomenclature, just to baffle us - likecalling a ‘clip’ an ‘event’, the visual result on the screen will be indistinguishable fromany other - always keeping within the parameters of standard or high definition. There will be many more bells and whistles on the expensive gubbins - there’s gotto be a difference between a suite costing £500 and a cut down version for £50! But dowe want all these instant “Make you a Hollywood Director” claims? It is the content of the film rather than the quality that holds one’s interest and here’sthe rub. We can put on the screen, images equal to the best that the professionals canachieve but when it comes to content, we flounder in dreadfully delivered deadpancommentaries, lifted from guide books that are meant to be read rather than spoken. Enthusiastic commentaries that start immediately after the first fade-in to the lastfade to The End. Flat commentaries that describe what we can see. (David Attenborough) Awfulpuns (Cash In The Attic) I include the two professional titles because they could be somuch better.. Puerile storylines that even professional actors could not make believable. Obscure storylines than mean nothing. I once had to judge an entry in BIAFF thatconsisted of a plain grey background across which an amorphous slightly less grey wispof smoke that drifted from the right of the screen to the left - taking three minutes to doit and then moving back to where it started. Another was of an inside of a computer witha small LED blinking, nothing else, no movement, for four minutes. And can anyone tell me what Bob Lorrimer’s The Bear Behind is about?

An amateur documentary film of which I cannot remember the title had, in theopening 20 second sequence, a man walking toward a canal boat. He was speeded up,slow motioned, jump cutted, distorted and colour changed for, to me, no reason otherthat the producer could do it on his timeline.

I made a gaff at my own club, when a fairly new member submitted a film with apoor soundtrack recorded in difficult circumstances. When projection ended we wereasked for comments and I said that the sound-track was “Totally unacceptable” Therewere several raised eyebrows and intakes of breath. The gaff was that it was the kind ofcomment I would (and have, often) use to seeing my own films before some editing andpruning. It was not the sort of blunt observation that should be made to any filmmaker, rather the choice of words should be more considered. However, this is so frequent an observation made by third parties to others, that weALL recognise shortcomings of others - but seldom ourselves. I wonder why? This is in addition to the the comments on judging in the January edition of the IACVideo & Film Making magazine that arrived with this copy of Nor Easter.

(There probably is no such word as ‘cutted’ but you’ll know what I mean!)

Right now we in PAL TV operate at 25 fps. In theparts of the world using NTSC it is 29.8, using a dropframe to catch up with 60 cycle mains. (There’s acomplicated reason why this is - but not gone intohere!) Amateur cine ran, usually, at 16 and then18fps, sometimes 24 which is the frame rate incinemas..... or used to be. Some of the more recent offerings on the ‘silver’screen are run at higher speeds. The silverdescription might have come from some screensactually being painted silver - wonderful forprojectionists, but that’s about all, anyone sitting offaxis got a very mediocre view for their 6d ticket. Edison for some time in the 1900’s shot hismovies at 46fps to obviate the flicker (hence goingto the Flicks) but abandoned it before very longwhen counting up the cost of film stock! In the nickelodeon days, the projected speed ofsilent films were a something of movable feast.Popular films often shown at a higher speeds so thatan extra ‘house’ could be fitted into the dailyschedule. Film studios started printing the time ontheir posters, but these were pasted over by theexhibitors... The coming of sound standardisedspeed at 24 frames - although changing speed stillgoes on. Because it is transmitted at 25fps. 90minute feature film shown on TV is about 3 minutesshorter than in the cinema... There were also manyvariations in film width - 70mm movies were madeway back in the 1920’s!

GOING TO THE PICTURES

“My working life was involved in advertising, first as copywriter and later asCreative Director in one of London’s major advertising agencies. I started makingfamily movies in the 1950’s using a cheap Dekko camera and crudely edited thefilms using a plastic ‘moviola’ type of editor. I took up filming more seriously whenI retired, hoping to try out some of the skills I had noticed at studios and editing

My first video camera was a JVC-C and my editingsuite was DirectEd. This system was pretty crude and itwasn’t very long before getting a computer and a moreefficient editing system - Pinnacle Studio 200/400 andalmost got involved in testing video editing software forPinnacle - now Avid. Still do their ‘beta’ testing. Now I have a Canon UC-x2 Hi8, Sony TVR900, HC7and FV1 camcorders. My main editing system is AvidMedia Composer with Liquid Avid and Avid Studio asback-ups.

I tend to make short films - a reflection of my career, having to create 30 and 60second Commercials! I am pleased to say that I’ve gained a number of awards at Club, County,Regional and International levels, including trophies at BIAFF and a Silver at UNICARight now, am working on a project about a local resident - Enid Blyton - before shebecame famous. Also the regular Southern Script column in Film & Video Maker

MIKE SHAW

Following Mike will be the AGM and buffet tea. Then a programme of films until about 7.30pm when the Spring Event closes.

ALAN SIDI

Alan Sidi had a high profile in North East amateur film making. He was an exuberant and inventive film maker. His Sidisync was aningenious way of adding synchronous sound to small gauge film, 16mm,standard and super 8mm , always a huge problem before sound cameras cameon the scene. A member of Mercury Movies, he was a fine filmmaker and produced someof the best underwater shots around the Mediterranean that the writer has seen. One room of his house was given over to editing where along with M.M. memberReg White made many notable films. One was ‘Devil God’ when the scriptcalled for a car to plunge to destruction over a cliff - Alan provided the car! Many other adventures, like shooting a total eclipse alongside Patrick Mooreand being shot AT when he ventured into a ‘No Entry’ place in the USA.

In these days of simply and expensively replacing parts, people withscrewdrivers, cogs, shafts and oilcans, just don’t come along.

Can’t think that there will be many more like Alan, who has died at the ageof 80. (Ed)

Clipped from The Northern Echo

NERIAC Secretary GEORGE THEAKER writes In spite of the depressing start of the weather for the start of the ScarboroughFestival, three hours after the cover photograph was taken the Seaside Resort wasback to its Sparkling Self and remained a delight for the remainder of the weekend. Not only in the bracing fresh air, but with the friendliness inside the hotel. It wasgood to see so many friends who, year after year, support this annual get-together.The numbers may be slightly down - there was a rather nasty chesty cold doing therounds - but everyone seemed to think that it was a memorable weekend. Ivor, our Chairman mentioned how members enjoyed the fresh approach by theSpeaker, Alan Colegrave to making movies. His ‘Nude Bicycle Ride Protest’presentation was a hoot and was put together in such a way that, in retrospect, hadall the appearance of video, but was in fact, made up of well edited still shots. Another feather in Alan’s Cap was when he stayed behind to help ‘do thewashing up’ by clearing cables, carrying boxes to the projection teams cars, etc.Mention must be made of the muscular efforts of the projection team - all that kitused for the smooth flowing show must have weighted a ton! Rather disappointingly the ‘Chairman’s Challenge’ did not attract many entries- only two in fact. It was a difficult theme ‘Going Home’. All felt for the Judge,(once more) Alan Colegrave. The two entries were so different that it was notpossible to say which was the better interpretation of the theme, but a winner had tobe decided. Alan said after much deliberation, that the Wakefield entry containedmarginally sharper editing and so got the £50 cheque.
