1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 –

2018 biennium? The Alpha Chapter Executive Board and members will be guided by our 2016-2018 Chapter Theme, “Making a Difference.” As our focus on meeting the needs of our members continues, we hope to solidify our chapter with members dedicated to continuing to grow personally and professionally within our organization.

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals.

This year we will host four meetings. During our planning meeting in August, we worked together to create three exciting meeting events that centers around the three main SAP goals of Membership, Leadership and Communication. In October we hosted an orientation meeting. We invited thirteen prospects to that meeting. We were so excited that a few could make it. We celebrated our birthday as a chapter on February 4, 2017 at Paesano Ristorante Italiano, Waimalu. Our meeting focus was on supporting SEE Initiative. We created small goodie bags that included post-it notes, clips and pens to give to new teachers at our schools. Donna Shiroma and Pat Park were our special guest and shared tips on membership and shared exciting details of the Southwest Regional Conference in July. We created cards and wrote a special note to an Alpha sister that missed our birthday meeting. Our year culminates with a breakfast meeting where we will have our initiation.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium?

The prospect letters and orientation meeting was a great idea for recruitment of new members. Our greatest challenge for our chapter is to try to increase membership participation at meetings.

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July?

Our chapter invited Donna Shiroma, Beta Beta State President and Pat Park, Southwest Regional Director to our February 4th meeting to share about the Southwest Regional Conference in July. We have mailed all of our members a save the date reminder of the conference and sent emails with information about the conference.

Beta Chapter – Aloha Dayton, President

1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 –

2018 biennium?

• Bring in at least one new member.

• Encourage current members to participate in events.

• Support early career educators with supplies.

• Support other organizations and inform them of Delta Kappa Gamma.

• Honor our ‘Golden Treasures’ (DKG members for 40+ years) and share the

history in our chapter.

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state

and international goals.

• We will be welcoming a new member in May.

• The Executive Board divided up the list of chapter members and we

contact each member to encourage participation in chapter events.

• We donated classroom supplies to early career educators at identified

schools.

• We did a book drive in December and donated the books to Child

Protective Services.

• We did a bake sale and donated the proceeds to the Hawaii Food Bank.

• We will honor our Golden Treasures in May.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your

biennium?

Greatest Challenge: having all chapter members personalize their profile on

the Delta Kappa Gamma website and use the site as a

communication tool Greatest Celebration:

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in

attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July?

for the Southwest Regional Conference.

2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Gamma Chapter – Susan Alivado, President

1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 –

2018 biennium? Our chapter’s SAP & EEC targets continue to be aligned to BBS.

a. Increase membership b. Diverse membership c. Support early career educators d. Leadership development e. Expand visibility f. Increase communication

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state

and international goals. We continue to recruit a group of approximately 5 individuals yearly. Although not exclusive, we look at level of professional career and active (v retired) status due to our alarming self assessment of members showing the majority in retirement and at the elementary level. These members are invited to participate in chapter activities for most of the year and in March, a temperature check is done to gauge whether they are willing to make the commitment for membership. An initiation is scheduled for May 2017. We have expanded our membership to now have representation from college to elementary and doubled our “gainfully employed” members. In addition to supporting the district’s new teacher orientation, we also provided refreshments this year, to the mentor administration/teacher training. We have established a communication link with the district resource personnel should other needs arise. The chapter encourages the members, especially the officers to participate in the fall Leadership Development training. BBS financial support has helped to off set the expenses to neighbor island members. Our chapter continues to volunteer for various community and school activities. We proudly wear our red (sometimes black) shirts and DKG pin. Extra efforts have been made to be sure we are getting recognized and correctly identified as in the past we were misidentified and another group received the credit. Communication has improved with the publication of our chapter newsletter. Except for 1 member, the sisters have emails and an updated directory is continuously published. We made an effort to get members enrolled in the international directory and was

Page 5: 2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Alpha Chapter ...deltakappagammahi.org/attachments/BBS_Sp_2017_Chapter Rpts.pdf · 2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Alpha Chapter –

2

recognized last year by BBS as having 80+% registered at that time. When activities/meetings are held, personal calls are made to non respondents.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium?

Finding affordable meeting places that can accommodate our increasing numbers of participants is both a challenge and a celebration! Many sites are now assessing a room fee in addition to food purchases. Where we are also celebrating is in the increase in participants, we are usually able to meet the “25” minimum participants. Assigned committee members are also taking ownership in planning the non-business part of the agenda and for making all the site arrangements.

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in

attending the Southwest Regional Conference (SWR) in July?

The chapter members decided to target all mini silent auctions funding, held at regular meetings, towards supporting members wishing to attend the SWR. Sharing of what’s happening with members keeps everyone not only informed and also excited about the upcoming conference. For our Aloha response contribution, members were asked to volunteer to gather information for the tri-fold brochure for the conference bag and has increased the feeling of having ownership in the project.

Delta Chapter, Melvina Terao, President 1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 – 2018 biennium? In the past, Delta Chapter has annually provided 100 early career educators with “Pick-Me Up” kits filled with yummy snacks, DKG information and supplies. During this biennium, Delta Chapter will focus our attention on early career educators within our chapter to provide them with classroom assistance, mentoring and financial assistance through our “Delta Dynamo Grant” program. Our Delta Dynamo Grant was primarily designed with our early career members in mind. However, to be more inclusionary, it is to promote growth, excellence and innovation in all phases of a Delta sister’s life. 2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals. Delta Chapter is mindful of state and international goals in our chapter programs and activities and is achieving adequate progress. 3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium? Communication with our age diverse membership has been a challenge since not all members are connected to technological advancements. We have tried the “buddy” system where younger members convey information to our seasoned members, snail mail, calling, etc. This is definitely a work in progress. 4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? We have been doing the following:

• Forwarding all information we receive to our membership (i.e. draft schedule, Hawaii Night, Marketplace, cost, Meet the Block, purchasing advertisements in the program booklet, etc.)

• Asking members for assistance with hosting, packing bags for Hawaii Night, making hosting gifts, working in the Marketplace, making sashiko favors, etc.

• Discussion on how to provide financial assistance to our members.

1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016-

2018 biennium? (1) Continue use of technology to promote interaction and foster partnerships and

personal growth through updated state website. (2) Realize 100% of members in active participation. (3) Promote relevant and meaningful projects and programs to further educational

excellence. (4) Develop program to increase support for Early Career Educators. (5) Celebrate Legacies of Leadership benchmarks.

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state

Having an instructional sheet prepared and designating someone to follow up individually with our members is increasing the number of updated profiles. We continue to urge member involvement in the meaningful projects and programs that make up our Legacy of Leadership (Books for Keiki, Middle School Supports, Senior Capstone Program and Early Educator Supports). Time is provided during every meeting to discuss what has taken place in each area and upcoming activities.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium? My greatest challenge will be to have all chapter members participate (to the degree they are able) in Southwest Regional Conference and the Chapter’s Legacy of Leadership project. Successful accomplishment of this equals greatest celebration.

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July. As president, I am attending the state planning meetings with our representative(s). I have consolidated the information received at those planning meetings into packets that have been provided to our members so that they have information easily accessible regarding chapter assignments, calendar for conference and hotel/registration costs. Our chapter has been doing fundraising with Silent Auctions etc. to provide financial support to those members who are planning to attend the Southwest Regional Conference.

Iota Chapter – Shirlen Tanaka and Tracey Lee Jeffers, Presidents

1.What were your chapter's targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016-18 biennium? ● Membership: Accomplishment: To increase our membership each of the two years. We

exceeded our expectations from moving from 13 members to about 31 members. This is beyond doubling in size.

● Leadership: Accomplishment: Spreading around opportunities that allow members to lead

whether it’s at Chapter meetings. We rotate the leadership roles during our quarterly meetings.

● Communication: Accomplishment: More members are staying in touch with the Chapter due to our Facebook Page as well as email. Accomplishment: Creating a professional -level Chapter Website which was utilized for Fall Forum 2015 registration and information dissemination. Challenge: Having more members participate and come to Chapter meetings and BBS events. Challenge: Keeping Chapter Website updated and an active component to keeping us all informed.

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals?

● Our chapter is making an effort to meet the state and international goals by keeping open communication through our Facebook Page, emails and text messaging.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenges and greatest celebration during your biennium?

● IOTA’s greatest challenge will be to get 100% participation in meetings, conferences and/or convention.

● Another challenge is having members respond and give feedback to surveys, meeting invitations. ● Our greatest celebration will be to have all profiles completed and to get a 10% increase in

membership. Knowing about each of our sisters a little more and what their abilities are will benefit our chapter by allowing us to tap the tap resources we have within our membership.

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July?

● We inform members through emails, text messaging and our Facebook page on SWR information.

● We share information given at OCC meeting about the SWR conference at our quarterly meetings.

● We encourage attending and volunteering when they can for any of the days at SWR for our chapter. Allowing them to choose a day to come and support, not putting pressure on coming the whole time. Every little bit helps.

● At each chapter meeting we check to see if their membership is updated on the website so that they can register for SWR.

Kappa Chapter – Christina Small & Carole Mitsuyoshi-Sugai, Co-Presidents

1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 – 2018 biennium? Kappa’s SAP is aligned with the State SAP goals and activities: a. Membership

• Increase membership and active participation in Beta Beta State and Chapter activities

• Increase outreach to promote diverse membership b. Leadership

• Support Internationals Educational Excellence Committee initiatives that promote leadership and excellence in education

• Provide leadership development opportunities for all Chapter members c. Communication

• Expand visibility and accessibilities of Chapter programs to positively impact education

• Update and expand communication

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals. a. Membership

• Attendance at Fall Forum was a disappointment (1), however a great deal of effort is being made to maximize attendance at Spring Convention and SWR Conference.

• We have not recruited or reinstated any members during this first year of the biennium. Our efforts have been placed on re-motivate members.

• A major focus has been in increasing active participation in our chapter activities: All members are placed in one of three committees and each committee is responsible for one of the meetings. The chair of each committee is committed to communicate with members of her committee and ensure that each member is actively involved and/or communicated with. This has been relatively successful.

b. Leadership • SEE

- This project started with a strong participation by our members at the Hawaii Teacher Induction Center workday.

- We adopted Central North as our focus area and made several attempts to contact the liaison with unsuccessful results.

- Members have chosen to serve teachers in individual ways, i.e. tutoring, donations, encouragement, etc.

• Leadership development - Members are organized to allow more opportunity to take active roles in

facilitating/hosting chapter meetings. This has been relatively successful. - A line item has been included in the budget to pay for first timers to attend

Fall Forum and Spring Convention. - Steps are being taken to supplement SWR Conference registration fee.

c. Communication • Kappa Newsletter is used to publicize projects, activities, and achievements. • Email and phone calls also help to keep members informed.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your

biennium? a. Greatest Challenge: To reconnect and re-motivate our membership with the purposes

of DKG. We have seen some progress, but 100% is our goal. b. Greatest celebration: Enthusiasm and commitment of new members have brought

new energy to our chapter! Also, organizing our membership into three committees, chaired by leaders committed to increase participation, will hopefully be the conduit to resolving our challenge (mentioned above).

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in

attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? a. Steps are being taken to supplement SWR Conference registration fee. b. Members are asked to sign up and commit to specific date/time to assist at

registration desk (Kappa’s area of responsibility). c. Kappa Newsletter and emails are used to motivate and keep members informed.

Lambda Chapter – Nancyann Asato, President 1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016-2018 biennium? For the Strategic Action Plan (SAP), the Executive Board recommended and members agreed to four targeted priorities and ongoing maintenance of previous goals for Lambda:

1. Encouraging participation in the Southwest Regional Conference in July 2017 2. Supporting the Legacy Project’s publication of State Presidents’ bio, especially that of Lambda’s

Sarah Moriyama 3. Supporting Early-career Educators (SEE) by continuing our relationship with the Nanakuli-

Waianae Complex 4. Communications - Continue plans to digitize records and certify website 5. Maintenance

i. grow membership ii. encourage attendance at DKG functions iii. support participation in leadership development and training, and iv. continue to contact reserve and inactive Lambda members. 2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals? At each meeting, members are presented with progress reports and approve the direction our Lambda Chapter will pursue. We have finished our SAP with members prioritizing the targeted areas on which to focus. We have a final draft of new, aligned Chapter Rules. To support the SW Regional Conference, we held an extra meeting in February solely devoted to SWR. At this meeting, information was presented, favor materials for SWR distributed so each member could begin putting these together, and attendance at SWR was encouraged. We will convene an additional meeting on SWR in June to review our roles and assignments during SWR. We have focused on International’s and State’s SEE priority by adopting the Nanakuli-Waianae Complex for SEE activities. To support Beta Beta State’s SAP goal in Communication, Lambda has a member managing our webpage that will need to be certified. Work on the BBS SAP Membership goals include initiating three more members in May and contacting reserve and inactive members. We hope by keeping them abreast of Lambda activities, they will return as active members. We enjoy a high percentage of members attending our meetings – usually 70 – 80% of members present – exceeding the BBS SAP goal for membership participation. 3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium? Challenge:

• Increasing, maintaining, and diversifying membership with more school=level members • Incorporating FUN into our activities. • Helping membership keep abreast of current educational issues, trends, and topics, including current

understanding of the school system and areas of instruction. • Compiling and digitizing records • Implementing the SAP and monitoring progress on our stated goals and targets • Implementing my Chapter duties as President

Celebration: • Happy, well informed, sustained membership • Growth for all of us through leadership development

2 4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? Members are involved in hosting the banquet, creating favors for the banquet, and volunteering their time to assist with other duties. Two presentations from Lambda members have been accepted by the SWR planning committee. We have also included in our chapter budget, funds to supplement registration fees for those who register for the conference.

2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Mu Chapter – Vivian Hee, President

1. What are your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016-2018 biennium?

Mu chapter’s SAP and EEC goals are: MEMBERSHIP: inspire and provide support to continue to remain in DKG and how it can benefit the members LEADERSHIP: inspire and develop members to serve as leaders in all levels of DKG; educate members on PD training modules and other ed. resources. COMMUNICATION: educate members on technology and foster communication to the community through volunteer activities IMPACTING EDUCATORS AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE: participate in SEE project and identify ways to impact education through legislature, BOE, etc.

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals.

Mu Chapter has been trying to develop leaders by offering ways to participate in the leadership capacity through the chapter and state level. Several members are active as state officers and also in the state Expansion Committee. Also various members have been designated as leaders for their committees and for the next biennium, the officers have already been assigned.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium?

Since the general meetings are only 5 times a year, it is important to maximize our time together to get to know one another, develop leadership skills and technical skills. At every meeting time is devoted to learn the computer and its various aspects to simplify communication with each other. Attendance at meetings and activities are encouraged constantly.

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? Meeting times are set aside to encourage members to attend the conference. Sign up sheets for designated tasks are given early so members can plan their own time. Conference activities and sharing by those who have already attended a national/international conference will encourage many sisters to attend the Hawaii conference.

2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Xi Chapter – Esther Miller, President

1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 – 2018 biennium? Xi’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for 2016-2018 include: • Increase Xi’s membership by 10% in this biennium • Promoting relevant and meaningful projects and programs to further educational

excellence, respect members, and encourage cross-generational conversations and team building

• Clarify the benefits of joining DKG for all members • Review options to support ECE by developing an effective networking system among

ECE to include DKG members, other educators and those interested in educational excellence

• Continue to foster professional relationship, partnerships, and personal growth through updated state website access and interactions

• Expand the visibility of DKG International to community members • Encourage member involvement at BBS, Regional, and International conferences. • Explore the use of technology and other communication tools to promote interaction

among DKG members.

2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals. Xi’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for 2016-2018 include: • We have already met 50% of our membership goal with the initiation of three new

members. • Xi held a large rummage sale August 2016 in an effort to defray costs for those

wanting to attend the SWR Conference. We also included information about DKG and had brochures available at the payment stations.

• Each member who attended our September meeting received a business card sized note with a DKG elevator speech to make it easier to quickly share about DKG.

• In October we participated in the Kauai United Way Walk-a-thon as a fundraiser for our annual future educator scholarship. It was a great way to foster camaraderie between members while almost fully funding our 2017 scholarship.

• Following the walk-a-thon, we initiated two new members at our breakfast meeting. • In February we had a guest speaker from Kauai Community College share his about

his challenges as an early instructor, straight out of finishing his PhD and how he learned from those experiences and changed his teaching style to be more effective

and to engage his students more fully. He expressed interest in further networking with our members. As he expressed, “We know our field, but teaching is quite a different skill.”

• At the end of that meeting, we also bid farewell to one of our dear members who passed away.

• Our SWR Conference representative encouraged all of the members at the meeting to attend at least one day of the SWR conference. We have another fundraiser lined up to help defray costs for attendees.

• Meetings were held in various locations to help foster participation – one on the west side of the island, one in central Lihue, and the other a little north of Lihue.

3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your

biennium? I think one of our greatest challenges during our biennium will be member retention. The other will be organizing the 2018 Spring Conference. I think our greatest celebration will be a successful Spring Conference and hopefully the creation of a new support system for or activity with ECE.

4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in

attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? We are fundraising to help defray costs for those wanting to attend. We talk about SWR Conference at each meeting, in fact our most recent meeting included “sell” by our SWR Conf. liaison.
