2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Alpha Chapter – Megan Cummings, President
1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 –
2018 biennium? The Alpha Chapter Executive Board and members will be guided by our 2016-2018 Chapter Theme, “Making a Difference.” As our focus on meeting the needs of our members continues, we hope to solidify our chapter with members dedicated to continuing to grow personally and professionally within our organization.
2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals.
This year we will host four meetings. During our planning meeting in August, we worked together to create three exciting meeting events that centers around the three main SAP goals of Membership, Leadership and Communication. In October we hosted an orientation meeting. We invited thirteen prospects to that meeting. We were so excited that a few could make it. We celebrated our birthday as a chapter on February 4, 2017 at Paesano Ristorante Italiano, Waimalu. Our meeting focus was on supporting SEE Initiative. We created small goodie bags that included post-it notes, clips and pens to give to new teachers at our schools. Donna Shiroma and Pat Park were our special guest and shared tips on membership and shared exciting details of the Southwest Regional Conference in July. We created cards and wrote a special note to an Alpha sister that missed our birthday meeting. Our year culminates with a breakfast meeting where we will have our initiation.
3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium?
The prospect letters and orientation meeting was a great idea for recruitment of new members. Our greatest challenge for our chapter is to try to increase membership participation at meetings.
4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July?
Our chapter invited Donna Shiroma, Beta Beta State President and Pat Park, Southwest Regional Director to our February 4th meeting to share about the Southwest Regional Conference in July. We have mailed all of our members a save the date reminder of the conference and sent emails with information about the conference.

2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Gamma Chapter – Susan Alivado, President
1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 –
2018 biennium? Our chapter’s SAP & EEC targets continue to be aligned to BBS.
a. Increase membership b. Diverse membership c. Support early career educators d. Leadership development e. Expand visibility f. Increase communication
2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state
and international goals. We continue to recruit a group of approximately 5 individuals yearly. Although not exclusive, we look at level of professional career and active (v retired) status due to our alarming self assessment of members showing the majority in retirement and at the elementary level. These members are invited to participate in chapter activities for most of the year and in March, a temperature check is done to gauge whether they are willing to make the commitment for membership. An initiation is scheduled for May 2017. We have expanded our membership to now have representation from college to elementary and doubled our “gainfully employed” members. In addition to supporting the district’s new teacher orientation, we also provided refreshments this year, to the mentor administration/teacher training. We have established a communication link with the district resource personnel should other needs arise. The chapter encourages the members, especially the officers to participate in the fall Leadership Development training. BBS financial support has helped to off set the expenses to neighbor island members. Our chapter continues to volunteer for various community and school activities. We proudly wear our red (sometimes black) shirts and DKG pin. Extra efforts have been made to be sure we are getting recognized and correctly identified as in the past we were misidentified and another group received the credit. Communication has improved with the publication of our chapter newsletter. Except for 1 member, the sisters have emails and an updated directory is continuously published. We made an effort to get members enrolled in the international directory and was
2
recognized last year by BBS as having 80+% registered at that time. When activities/meetings are held, personal calls are made to non respondents.
3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium?
Finding affordable meeting places that can accommodate our increasing numbers of participants is both a challenge and a celebration! Many sites are now assessing a room fee in addition to food purchases. Where we are also celebrating is in the increase in participants, we are usually able to meet the “25” minimum participants. Assigned committee members are also taking ownership in planning the non-business part of the agenda and for making all the site arrangements.
4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in
attending the Southwest Regional Conference (SWR) in July?
The chapter members decided to target all mini silent auctions funding, held at regular meetings, towards supporting members wishing to attend the SWR. Sharing of what’s happening with members keeps everyone not only informed and also excited about the upcoming conference. For our Aloha response contribution, members were asked to volunteer to gather information for the tri-fold brochure for the conference bag and has increased the feeling of having ownership in the project.
2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention
Delta Chapter, Melvina Terao, President 1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 – 2018 biennium? In the past, Delta Chapter has annually provided 100 early career educators with “Pick-Me Up” kits filled with yummy snacks, DKG information and supplies. During this biennium, Delta Chapter will focus our attention on early career educators within our chapter to provide them with classroom assistance, mentoring and financial assistance through our “Delta Dynamo Grant” program. Our Delta Dynamo Grant was primarily designed with our early career members in mind. However, to be more inclusionary, it is to promote growth, excellence and innovation in all phases of a Delta sister’s life. 2. Describe your progress in achieving outcomes and connecting your targets to the state and international goals. Delta Chapter is mindful of state and international goals in our chapter programs and activities and is achieving adequate progress. 3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium? Communication with our age diverse membership has been a challenge since not all members are connected to technological advancements. We have tried the “buddy” system where younger members convey information to our seasoned members, snail mail, calling, etc. This is definitely a work in progress. 4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? We have been doing the following:
• Forwarding all information we receive to our membership (i.e. draft schedule, Hawaii Night, Marketplace, cost, Meet the Block, purchasing advertisements in the program booklet, etc.)
• Asking members for assistance with hosting, packing bags for Hawaii Night, making hosting gifts, working in the Marketplace, making sashiko favors, etc.
• Discussion on how to provide financial assistance to our members.

After the activity, members signed up for Theta committee’s and leadership opportunities with the Southwest Regional Conference and the Theta hosted Fall Forum 2017. Our communication is primarily using Google Docs and we have training sessions at the beginning of every meeting. We encourage all the members to BYOD (Bring your own device) to every meeting. In September, we sent notes to Theta sisters that had not attended the August meeting. We practiced writing Haiku in order to develop our Aloha Response for the Southwest Regional Convention. 1.What were your chapter's targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016-18 biennium? ● Membership: Accomplishment: To increase our membership each of the two years. We

● Communication: Accomplishment: More members are staying in touch with the Chapter due to our Facebook Page as well as email. Accomplishment: Creating a professional -level Chapter Website which was utilized for Fall Forum 2015 registration and information dissemination. ● Another challenge is having members respond and give feedback to surveys, meeting invitations. ● Our greatest celebration will be to have all profiles completed and to get a 10% increase in
membership. Knowing about each of our sisters a little more and what their abilities are will benefit our chapter by allowing us to tap the tap resources we have within our membership.

• We have not recruited or reinstated any members during this first year of the biennium. Our efforts have been placed on re-motivate members.
• A major focus has been in increasing active participation in our chapter activities: All members are placed in one of three committees and each committee is responsible for one of the meetings. The chair of each committee is committed to communicate with members of her committee and ensure that each member is actively involved and/or communicated with. This has been relatively successful.
b. Leadership • SEE
- This project started with a strong participation by our members at the Hawaii Teacher Induction Center workday.
- We adopted Central North as our focus area and made several attempts to contact the liaison with unsuccessful results.
- Members have chosen to serve teachers in individual ways, i.e. tutoring, donations, encouragement, etc.
2
• Leadership development - Members are organized to allow more opportunity to take active roles in
facilitating/hosting chapter meetings. This has been relatively successful. - A line item has been included in the budget to pay for first timers to attend
Fall Forum and Spring Convention. - Steps are being taken to supplement SWR Conference registration fee.

At each meeting, members are presented with progress reports and approve the direction our Lambda Chapter will pursue. We have finished our SAP with members prioritizing the targeted areas on which to focus. We have a final draft of new, aligned Chapter Rules. To support the SW Regional Conference, we held an extra meeting in February solely devoted to SWR. At this meeting, information was presented, favor materials for SWR distributed so each member could begin putting these together, and attendance at SWR was encouraged. We will convene an additional meeting on SWR in June to review our roles and assignments during SWR. We have focused on International’s and State’s SEE priority by adopting the Nanakuli-Waianae Complex for SEE activities. To support Beta Beta State’s SAP goal in Communication, Lambda has a member managing our webpage that will need to be certified. Work on the BBS SAP Membership goals include initiating three more members in May and contacting reserve and inactive members. We hope by keeping them abreast of Lambda activities, they will return as active members. We enjoy a high percentage of members attending our meetings – usually 70 – 80% of members present – exceeding the BBS SAP goal for membership participation. 3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium? Challenge:
• Increasing, maintaining, and diversifying membership with more school=level members • Incorporating FUN into our activities. • Helping membership keep abreast of current educational issues, trends, and topics, including current
understanding of the school system and areas of instruction. • Compiling and digitizing records • Implementing the SAP and monitoring progress on our stated goals and targets • Implementing my Chapter duties as President
Celebration: • Happy, well informed, sustained membership • Growth for all of us through leadership development

Several members are active as state officers and also in the state Expansion Committee. Also various members have been designated as leaders for their committees and for the next biennium, the officers have already been assigned.
3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your biennium?
Since the general meetings are only 5 times a year, it is important to maximize our time together to get to know one another, develop leadership skills and technical skills. 4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? Meeting times are set aside to encourage members to attend the conference. Sign up sheets for designated tasks are given early so members can plan their own time. 2017 Beta Beta State Spring Convention Xi Chapter – Esther Miller, President
1. What were your chapter’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for your 2016 – 2018 biennium? Xi’s targeted SAP and EEC goals and objectives for 2016-2018 include: • Increase Xi’s membership by 10% in this biennium • Promoting relevant and meaningful projects and programs to further educational
excellence, respect members, and encourage cross-generational conversations and team building
• Clarify the benefits of joining DKG for all members • Review options to support ECE by developing an effective networking system among
ECE to include DKG members, other educators and those interested in educational excellence

members. • Xi held a large rummage sale August 2016 in an effort to defray costs for those
wanting to attend the SWR Conference. We also included information about DKG and had brochures available at the payment stations.
• Each member who attended our September meeting received a business card sized note with a DKG elevator speech to make it easier to quickly share about DKG.
• In October we participated in the Kauai United Way Walk-a-thon as a fundraiser for our annual future educator scholarship. It was a great way to foster camaraderie between members while almost fully funding our 2017 scholarship.
• Following the walk-a-thon, we initiated two new members at our breakfast meeting. • In February we had a guest speaker from Kauai Community College share his about
his challenges as an early instructor, straight out of finishing his PhD and how he learned from those experiences and changed his teaching style to be more effective
2
and to engage his students more fully. He expressed interest in further networking with our members. As he expressed, “We know our field, but teaching is quite a different skill.”
• At the end of that meeting, we also bid farewell to one of our dear members who passed away.
• Our SWR Conference representative encouraged all of the members at the meeting to attend at least one day of the SWR conference. We have another fundraiser lined up to help defray costs for attendees.
• Meetings were held in various locations to help foster participation – one on the west side of the island, one in central Lihue, and the other a little north of Lihue.
3. What do you think will be your greatest challenge and greatest celebration during your
biennium? I think one of our greatest challenges during our biennium will be member retention. The other will be organizing the 2018 Spring Conference. I think our greatest celebration will be a successful Spring Conference and hopefully the creation of a new support system for or activity with ECE.
4. What are you and your chapter doing to encourage and support your members in
attending the Southwest Regional Conference in July? We are fundraising to help defray costs for those wanting to attend. We talk about SWR Conference at each meeting, in fact our most recent meeting included “sell” by our SWR Conf. liaison.
