Program Aims Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) empowers nurses through specialist postgraduate education, which articulates to higher degree programs offered by Edith Cowan University and Curtin University of Technology. Students are eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning at other universities upon successful completion. In providing a progressive and supported learning environment, specialist postgraduate education programs at SCGH empower nurses to become critical thinkers, competent in specialist nursing roles and future leaders of the profession whilst developing a commitment to life long learning. Study Options This distance learning program provides a formal qualification for registered nurses working in the speciality of nephrology nursing. The focus of the program is to develop advanced skills and knowledge in nephrology nursing. Participants complete the practical components of the program in their usual work place. Options to negotiate for further clinical placement in peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis and the renal /transplantation ward are available. Length of Program The program may be completed in two semesters (one-year, full time) or up to four semesters (two years part-time). Application Documentation: Applicants must submit the following: Covering letter Curriculum Vitae Copy of nursing registration Statement addressing selection criteria Name and contact details of two professional referees Selection Criteria: Eligible for Division 1 registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. A minimum of one year’s recent post-registration experience and six months nephrology nursing experience. Well developed verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to be a self-directed learner. Demonstrated ability to adapt to a new environment. Demonstrated problem solving ability in the work place. theory unitsAdvanced Nursing Concepts (ANC)This foundation unit introduces broad concepts of advanced physiology and clinical care. The unit encourages development of problem-solving skills based on advanced nursing principles. Modules within this unit include; physical assessment, cardio-pulmonary physiology, shock, oxygen therapy and fluid and electrolyte management.

Nephrology Nursing 1 (NN1) This unit broadly examines the clinical assessment and management of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Renal pharmacology, nutrition, principles of patient education and chronic disease management are included in this unit.

Nephrology Nursing 2 (NN2)Nephrology nursing professional issues are developed in this unit’s electives. Students may choose course work topics or a particular project to complete this unit. Elective course work topics include; ethics, palliative care, renal transplantation and psychosocial issues.

Practical unitAdvanced Nursing Practice (ANP)This unit provides an in-depth exploration of care of the renal patient and includes renal replacement therapies, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis and renal transplantation.

Assessment A number of assessment methods are used including presentation, essay, worksheet and clinical assessment in the work place. Each unit will have three major pieces of assessment.

Course FeesNurses employed at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital: $250 per unit

Nurses employed in Western Australian: $500 per unit

Nurses employed in Australia $750 per unit

International applicants $1,000 (AUS) per unit
