Have you ever wanted to drink a coffee decorated with a swan or a horse icon? Or
perhaps you fancy hearts swirling on top of your caffeine fix? It’s almost become the norm to have a pretty cup of coffee these days.
At Ginger and Fig, a well-known restaurant and eatery in Pretoria, you will receive a perfect coffee blend in your cup and a picture on top. The coffee success is thanks to a great and long-standing partnership with small-batch coffee roasters, Doubleshot. But the main man behind each creamy cappuccino is Jabu Donovan Thumbani. We caught up with him to find out more about what he does.
Q: How long have you been a barista?
A: I have been a barista since April 2012.
Q: Why did you want to become a barista?
A: At first it was about having a job, but after about three months I fell in love with being a barista and I love the industry.
Q: Do you prefer single-origin coffee beans or do you like a blend?
A: I prefer a blend because we can manipulate the flavour profile to our taste preference.

started, Ishan Natalie was a great inspiration. Internationally, I follow people on Instagram who give me inspiration for my latte art.

A: My favourite is a latte, because of the opportunity to show my skills with latte art.
Q: Why do you serve Doubleshot at Ginger and Fig?
A: We serve it because it is the first coffee that Zane, the owner, fell in love with. We have a really great relationship with Alain and love the roast profiles that he develops for us.
Q: What is your favourite thing about going to work at Ginger and Fig?
A: My favourite thing is the atmosphere and my relationship with the customers. I really enjoy my job and I love what I do.

am prone to hibernation at this time of year. I think I would’ve made a good bear. There’s something so

Oh so French!In Paris on 14 July the Champs-
Élysées will be trodden by thousands of feet and a military
parade as Bastille Day celebrations commence. Bastille Day is an important day in all Francophone nations as it celebrates the Storming of the Bastille, a significant event in the French Revolution. This day is celebrated all over the world, in countries such as Ireland, the US, and in our own country.
If you are a bit of a Francophile, missing out on an event that celebrates all things French is out of the question. Every year, Brasserie de Paris celebrates this day in style. Bastille Day enables the restaurant to showcase what South Africa, and especially Pretoria, has to offer in terms of fine food, wines and entertainment, and it symbolises the advent of the modern age and power to the ordinary man and woman.

E lias Letswele, executive chef at the South African Reserve Bank, has been a chef for 34 years
and ensures dishes for governors and deputy governors are prepared on time and meet all dietary requirements. This successful chef has achieved numerous awards for his cooking abilities including the South Africa Chefs Association Presidents Award in 2008.
Q: When did you start cooking?A: I first discovered my love for food
when I was 14 years old cooking with my mother. After finishing Grade 11, I went to hotel school in Ga-Rankuwa. I then did my in-service training as a junior pastry chef at the Southern Sun Hotel group and began my career as a chef in 1982.
Q: What does an average day entail for you?
A: I send out emails with the menu to secretaries so staff can book meals for the following day. I then check bookings so I can start preparing dishes. There can be as many as seven dining rooms booked in one day and I need to ensure meals are prepared on time. I coordinate work in the kitchen, manage staff and food costs, plan menus, order supplies and ensure quality and presentation of the food is correct.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve served?
A: I have served Gill Marcus, the ninth Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. She is always so
grateful to the kitchen team and sometimes comes into
the kitchen and gives
great recommendations regarding healthy ingredients to use in dishes.
Q: What’s your advice for budding chefs?
A: Don’t panic as few mistakes are insurmountable, and mistakes can turn out to be new discoveries. If we don’t make mistakes we don’t learn. It is vital that individuals aspiring to be chefs have a passion for cooking. Cooking is an art and a successful dish is created when one flavour does not overwhelm the others, but harmonises with others to create a taste sensation.
Q: What is your favourite meal?A: My favourite meal is braised
oxtail and samp, which is a wonderful winter time dish and goes well with red wine.
Q: What is your signature dish?A: My signature dish is grilled
salmon with poached asparagus and Hollandaise sauce because it is a light dish which is healthy and easy to prepare.
Q: Who inspires you?A: Jeff Forrer, former group
development director, Peermont Global: Hotels, Casinos and Resorts, is an inspiration to me. When I was around 20 years old, I worked with him at a construction company building a plant. In the evenings I assisted the cooking manager on site who prepared meals for the team. Jeff saw I had an interest in cooking and paid for me to go to hotel school.

Buying an older home is a romantic proposition for many. If you appreciate a beautiful
antique, then the appeal of a home that has an aged character and many years of memories within its walls is easy to understand. It’s one of the reasons why Linden, a suburb established in the 1950s in Johannesburg, has become one of the most sought-after areas for house hunters looking for some nostalgia.
Ross Garrett, a professional photographer, recently chose to buy his dream home in Linden.
“I loved everything about the suburb, and the home was exactly what I wanted. Granted, it’s an old property, but it was well maintained. I knew that older homes could potentially present with challenges around older infrastructure such as the electrical wiring, plumbing, roof trusses and building materials. Fixing such issues if they did pop up after the sale could be frustrating and cost a truckload of unplanned money, but I loved everything about this property. None of these issues were visible when I viewed the home, but obviously it remained a real concern,” explains Ross.
“When estate agent Ahmed Moosa, from Ennik Estates, informed me that the seller had signed up for a Hollard home warranty and explained what it was all about, I knew it was a win-win situation. Not only could I get the home I wanted, but I had the security of a warranty to protect me against the financial implications of unseen defects cropping up later,” he adds.

“I was confident that my home was well maintained and to the best of my knowledge it was free of any major defects. Cape about seven-years-ago, Ben and Este Coetzer (a qualified engineer and a dietician respectively), decided to mill whole wheat kernels themselves to see what the bread would taste like. Are the housing market scales tipping? Recent property sales figures
suggest that the market is currently in a transition phase,
with demand for property decreasing during the first half of this year.
Adrian Goslett, CEO, RE/MAX, Southern Africa, says that while the market has favoured sellers for some time, the dynamics are changing and the scales are tipping in homebuyers’ favour.

Terence Hogben, principal, Leapfrog Property Group, Durban Central, says, “We’re experiencing quite a buoyant property market with property pricing increasing significantly over the last two years, especially in areas like Morningside, with its close proximity to excellent schools such as the Clifton Preparatory School.”

“If demand for housing continues to wane, property inventory will increase and the market will become far more competitive among sellers. In a more buyer-slanted market, sellers need to ensure that they price their homes correctly to sell faster than the neighbour they will be competing with.”According to the FNB Property Barometer in June, while there is currently a good supply and demand balance in the property market
which resulted in positive house price growth in real terms, there are perceived signs of weakening.
According to the report there has been an increase of residential supply on the market on a monthly basis. Although the number of properties on the market remains constrained, there has recently been a noticeable rise, with supply seeing positive growth for the last five months consecutively.

The rise of the unprotected
The outcome of the Brexit vote in the UK came as a shock to financial markets. The British
pound lost 10% against the US dollar in just eight hours, and the FTSE 100 on the London Stock Exchange fell nearly 6% in two days of trade.
This market turmoil showed that it was an outcome few analysts expected. However, it is worth asking whether it should really have been such a surprise.
Populism is a growing political phenomenon all over the world. Donald Trump’s success in the Republican primaries in the US and growing support for far right parties in many parts of Europe bear this out.
In many respects, what this is about is a revolt of the economically “unprotected”. All over the world people in middle- to lower-income groups are getting poorer and more vulnerable.
If you are comfortably upper middle class, you can afford to pay for good education for your children, you can secure your home with private security, you can manage the inflationary increases to your living expenses, and if the worst happens, you can pay a good lawyer to get you out of trouble. For those of fewer means, however, all of these things may be out of reach.
Just consider that in South Africa the official inflation rate in urban centres was 6,2% for April. For poorer people, however, it was 8,2%, while among the richer it was only 5,9%.
The unprotected are getting further and further marginalised, and that is why they have a growing sense that the dominant global political and economic system is not working for them. This is what leads them to vote to change it in whatever way that presents itself.
Their votes are for Brexit, for Trump and, in South Africa, for the EFF. None of these options presents a coherent, rational alternative, but that isn’t what this is about. They are voting against something more than they are voting for anything.
The threat to stability that this presents is obvious, and it is one of the greatest political challenges the world is now facing. How do we manage the needs of the unprotected so that they don’t rush into the arms of populist movements?
The answer quite simply has to be that the current system has to reform. In South Africa, this is called inclusive growth. There is no stable future in this country as long as a significant portion of the population is excluded from its economy.
This is something that our leaders in the government, business and civil society can’t afford to get wrong because the alternative could make Brexit look like a teddy bear’s picnic.
