PastSMSTS exam questions are not available andcourse providers are forbidden from sharingthem under the Site Safety Plus SchemeRules set by the Construction IndustryTraining Board. Whether you are covering thecost yourself or getting sponsorship, you willunderstandably want to get the most out ofyour SMSTS training.

1 Make lots of notes during the course2 Ask questions3 Find your learning style4 Do your homework, stay on top of the

learning5 Keep Calm, Get Rest and Eat Well

SMSTS gives a great understanding ofthe numerous legal obligations of a jobin constructionThe SMSTS certification is an excellent wayto increase safety and environmentalawareness on site. Passing the SiteManagement Safety Training Scheme examis a matter of being prepared – hopefully bytaking these 5 tips on board you can get themost from your course and prepare well.

What’s changed in the new-look GeneralCertificate course? The NEBOSH National General Certificate hasbeen revised to include an updated syllabusto teach learners about health and safety inthe modern workplace. NEBOSH haveupdated the language to make it easier forpeople to understand. In addition, thestructure has also been modified so there isnow less emphasis on exams and a biggerfocus on practical application.

How has NEBOSH made the languageeasier? They are dropping the use of ‘CommandWords’ to change with the times and if you arewondering if this is a direct result of the NCRQ

becoming more popular – then try getting a jobwith just an NCRQ qualification. However, it isthe market opening up to other qualificationswhich is most likely the driver for the new-lookNEBOSH General Certificate.

How does the new General Certificatesyllabus compare on learning time? The new syllabus actually means the course isnow shorter! The new specificationrecommends 113 hours of learning comparedto 133 on the old specification. However, ifstudying in a classroom the course will stillneed the same time commitment, it’s theexternal ‘home study’ which is slightly reduced. You’ll have 5 years to complete your NEBOSHGeneral Certificate. This time frame starts fromwhen you pass your first module exam.

If you have already passed a NEBOSHCertificate, your qualification is still validOnce you have passed your NEBOSHCertificate, you will be pleased to know itcannot be retracted and will still be relevant forhealth and safety job applications. Furthermore, you can still use it to apply for membership ofprofessional membership organisations suchas IOSH and IIRSM.

In fact, you do not need to say whichspecification you studied. All that matters isthat you have achieved your qualification.

NEBOSH portal givesstudents an edge

RISK & Safety Management Serviceshas a history of achieving higherpass rates than the national averageand has won awards based upontheir unique blend of technology, teaching and innovative courseformat. With the introduction of anonline portal, RISK NEBOSHdelegates will now get additional e-learning support at no extra cost.

Blended NEBOSH Certificate CoursesNEBOSH Certificate courses are tough, in aclassroom you get much more supportbecause you are embedded with people inthe same situation and the teaching isamplified by the questions and differentperspectives of your fellow delegates. RISKhave always provided ‘out of hours tutorsupport’ but now we have gone one stepfurther with online NEBOSH e-learninghomework modules.

NEBOSH online modules to helpdelegates retain more and learn fasterThe aim of our blended learning is tomaximise the best of face-to-face and onlinetuition. The advantage of using a blended‘learning’ approach (i.e. online andclassroom) is that classroom time can beused to engage delegates by explaining, discussing, responding to and clarifyingquestions. Helping our delegatesunderstand what they have viewed andlistened to at a deeper level. Thensupporting online activities and assessmentscan be completed in the delegates own timeto ensure the learning is embedded.
