Edition 08 Dereham Neatherd High School Newsletter

On her 13th birthday Anne

Frank was given a diary in

which she recorded her

thoughts and feelings

before and whilst in hiding. Following Anne's death in Bergen-Belsen in

1945, her father, Otto Frank, chose to publish her diary in order to help

challenge the hatred that had killed his daughter. Founded in 1990, the

Anne Frank Trust UK uses Anne's life and inspirational message as an

anchor to educate people about damage caused by all forms of prejudice

and discrimination.

The school was delighted to welcome the Trust to our school for two

weeks, for which a group of Year 9 students were trained to give tours of

the exhibition. We also welcomed over 70 visitors from our community

during the fortnight. “We are delighted to be able to give our students this

opportunity to remember the past and think about how they can change

the future”, said Mr O’Brien.

International Prefects delivered the donations to the local Community

Hub were they were welcomed and shown round the premises by

Andrew Frere-Smith of the Dereham Community Support Centre. “We

are very grateful for the donations”, he said, “It is great to see that the

students get involved in these projects”. He explained that all the food

from the Dereham warehouse is distributed to people in need in

Swaffham, Fakenham and at the Wellspring Church in Dereham.

The students were impressed with the set-up and amazed at how many

volunteers were involved in the project. After they had looked around the

premises they even got the chance to pack a few boxes themselves

ready to be distributed to families in crisis. “It is enlightening to see what

actually happens to the food items we donated”, say Georgia Reeve and

Heidi Tinker and Henry Pearce added “It is good to know that we have

done something to help our community”.

The rain may have visited, but so also did a large

part of our community, when we held a

Community Wellbeing Day.

There was a range of information and hands-on events

aimed at promoting healthy and happy lifestyles amongst

the town’s residents, from nutritional foods, through to

keeping safe and vigorous through a sensible lifestyle and

diet.

The community based organisations in attendance included folk from martial arts through to the school’s very own Rock Group, TNT, the Food For Life team and the Sewing Bee, just to name a few!

“We wanted to get a large variety of community members in to school so they could look at and take advantage of services they might not have considered in the past”, said Mrs Walker, the organiser of the event. “In these busy times it sometimes is good to just stop and take a break from our hectic lives; with this day we gave people an opportunity to do just that.”

Our annual Tapas Evening took place

directly following the Community Well-being Day, with tapas tasting, Spanish karaoke, a Spanish pub quiz and a salsa demonstration and dance!
