A mEssAGE FROm ThE PREsIDENT

We have had a phenomenal year that was capped off by our flagship fundraising event, The Langley—A Tribute to Legends. I am once again so proud to recognize our distinguished honorees, the beneficiaries, our sponsors and all of you who helped make this year so successful.

We had the distinct pleasure to enjoy an evening at Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa, California to celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s Langley event honorees—PGA TOUR Player and 1996 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Johnny Miller and Senior Vice President of Golf at the Pebble Beach Company RJ Harper, PGA. So many of you came out to support the event and led teams at The Langley Pro-Am Golf Tournament the following day. Of course, our good friend Jim Langley, the namesake for the event, continues to inspire us with his leadership and generosity.

Once again Capital Insurance Group (CIG) was a presenting sponsor of the event. Peter Cazzolla, president and CEO, has been a great supporter of not only this event but of golf in general for many years and we appreciate his partnership.

The Langley fundraising event benefits many worthwhile organizations including Folds of Honor, Sav ing Strokes, The Langley Scholarship Fund and many more. While it is our flagship event, the North-ern California PGA Foundation is impor-tant in so many ways throughout the year.

It was formed as a 501(c)3 organization so that PGA Professionals throughout the Northern California Section could leverage it to run golf programs for youth, disabled golfers and the underserved within their local communities. As such, the NCPGA professionals who are hosting these events can gain tax deduction benefits for those who attend and/or donate. The proceeds can go towards either local golf facility programs or community programs as well as favorably impact the facility’s revenues. I encourage our PGA Professionals to con-tinue to be leaders and supporters within the community. A perfect way is by hosting a fundraising event at their facility. More information can be found at www.NCP-GALinks.com under “Member Services.”

We launched a fun new fundraising tool

this year called the 100 Holes Challenge. PGA Professionals play 100 holes of golf, all in one day, using one ball, and playing one hole at a time. To raise funds, they request donations to support their chosen charity. Individuals can choose to sponsor a select amount per hole or a fixed amount for the entire 100 holes. PGA Profession-als and their facilities are listed by amount raised on our website so you can track your friends and colleagues or try to exceed their donation with a little friendly com-petition. Go to www.ncpgafoundation.org for more details.

When we can have a job we enjoy so much, be involved with such a great sport like golf, and also have a positive impact on so many people’s lives — we have definitely hit a hole in one. It has been my pleasure to serve as the Foundation’s president this year and I look forward to us reaching new heights in 2012.

Warm regards,

Ken Morton Sr., PGAPresident, Northern CaliforniaPGA Foundation

Jim Langley, PGa, with Ginger Gilbert ravella representing the folds of honor foundation and honoree Johnny Miller.

The Northern California PGA Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives and communities of those in northern California and north-western Nevada by providing resources to golf programs that teach life’s positive values. The numerous charitable organizations that the NCPGA Foundation supports throughout the year and through The Langley, A Tribute to Legends are only accomplished through the generosity of the participants, sponsors and PGA Professionals in northern California

and northwestern Nevada. We thank them for their continued tradition of giving in 2011. It is through their dedication and many hours of time they donate to their communities and charitable programs, that we are able to raise the much needed funds to support worthwhile causes such as Folds of Honor, Saving Strokes, the Langley Scholarship Fund, junior golf programs and many more.

Golf Professionals Leverage NCPGA Foundation to support Worthwhile Charities

that Promote Education and Life’s Values Through Golf

The Folds of Honor Foundation (FHF) salutes the sacrifice of fallen and disabled service members by ensuring their families are not left behind. They seek to brighten their futures and help them achieve their dreams. Through scholarships and other assistance, they provide healing and hope to these families and seek to rally the nation in support of those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

Founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member, the organization empowers the children and spouses by providing scholarships and other educational assistance opportunities. A major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Major Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. After returning from his second tour, Major Rooney created the Folds of Honor Foundation.

One family that FHF has touched is the Gilbert family. Like Major Rooney, Major Troy Gilbert was an F-16 pilot in Iraq. One day in November 2006 he was flying low protecting ground troops in Iraq when he lost his life. He saved 22 men on the ground that day through his sacrifice. He has a beautiful and strong family, who is very proud of him and misses him very much.

His wife Ginger, to whom he was mar-ried for 13 years, suddenly became a single mom of five children — two boys and three girls. At the time of Major Gilbert’s death, their children were 9, 6 and 3 years old as well as 9-month-old twin girls. Just days before his death, Troy made a videotape for his kids, reading them Christmas and Bible stories and telling them about the planes in the background at the Air Force

base where he was videotaping. The Gil-berts received the video a few days after his accident. “What a treasured gift we have so that the kids have a final message from their dad,” said Ginger.

FULFILLINGDREAMSGinger and Troy met in college and mar-ried shortly after graduation. They had hopes and dreams like all families of rais-ing their children together and sending them off to college.

Air Force families have a strong tradition of looking after one another. Learning of Troy’s sacrifice and knowing the financial hardship this would place on Ginger, Major Rooney contacted Ginger and told her about the FHF.

“The college scholarships that are now being given to my kids and many others make such a huge impact for their future and affords us some financial relief,” said Ginger. “This is such a blessing and we are so thankful for everything that Dan, the FHF, and all of its contributors are doing. I am now able to fulfill our dream of sending our kids to college.”

“Whether it’s through the NCPGA Langley event, Patriot Golf Day or direct donations to the Folds of Honor Foun-dation, these college scholarships for spouses and kids of fallen or disabled servicemen and women are an acknowl-edgement that the public has noticed and is grateful of the sacrifice that their mom, dad or spouse has made,” added Ginger. “It is a wonderful thing to know people are honoring Troy’s legacy. To me, it’s like a thank you note from golfers and the American public.”www.foldsofhonor.org

Many have heard of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Saving Strokes pro- gram that has changed the lives of so many stroke victors. What you may not know is it also brings tremendous rewards to the PGA Professionals who partake in the program.

PGA Head Professional Shawn Kelly is unique in that he understands the benefits of the program from both perspectives. Shawn first became involved with the pro-gram at its inception, which was inspired by NBA basketball player and broadcaster, the late Derrek Dickey.

“I had befriended Derrek before his stroke, we played golf and I gave him les-sons, I even saw him make a hole in one on the first hole at Cherry Island, a par 4, with a three iron,” said Shawn.

Derrek suffered a stroke in 1997 and lost the use of his left arm and leg. Through rehabilitation, he regained his ability to walk and resumed his broadcasting duties.

“After his stroke, our friend Grant Na-pier would pick Derrek up at his home in Sacramento and bring him to Champions Driving Range where we worked with him to learn how to swing with one arm. After a few months he was getting stronger and he was able to swing and make good contact and maintain some balance. Derrek was so inspired by the experience and wanted to give back to golf that he approached the AHA and the idea for Saving Strokes was created.”

“I believe late PGA Professional Ruben Samaniego who was at Haggin Oaks in those days was the professional that took the lead. He had expertise in helping dis-abled golfers. I was asked to participate on a committee, but I had other obligations that didn’t allow me to at the time,” added Shawn.

That changed in 2005, when he too suffered a stroke. Although Shawn perma-nently lost some peripheral vision on his right side, he was so appreciative of fully recovering, that he felt compelled to help other stroke victors. Shawn contributes his time at the annual Saving Strokes event, held at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, teach-ing other stroke victors golf skills.

“You don’t have to have ever played golf to participate, it just creates a great feel-ing of camaraderie and gets people out of the dumps,” said Marilyn Dodd, whose husband Bill suffered six strokes between 1981 and 1992 and was getting frustrated at his inability to play again. A great golfer before his stroke, Bill lost his sense of bal-ance. Via the Saving Strokes program, he is once again able to enjoy the game using a “Model Tee” cart, which comes equipped with an adaptable seat that swings out so that he can stand while being strapped to the modified seat with the seatbelt. This allows Bill to take a natural swing.

“Since Bill has been involved in the Saving Strokes Program, it gives him some-thing that he looks forward to that is an activity designed for him. It has allowed him to take an interest in golf again, after so many years of having to let it go,” added Marilyn.

Steve Koire had a stroke in 2009 at age 49 while undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumor. He continues to have balance

issues and tremors in his left arm and has since retired from his dental practice. Prior to his stroke, Steve was very athletic. He cycled, swam and played basketball–but never played golf. Now he plays weekly. “Participating in the program combats depression in people who’ve had their lives radically altered,” added Steve.

Chuck Cavalier rode his mountain bike 20 miles on a beautiful day in August 2003. Little did he know that his life would dramatically change just 24 hours later. He suffered a massive stroke as a result of taking the wrong medication, given to him by his doctor for a migraine. He lost the use of most of the left side of his body and today plays golf one-handed.

“I was not a golfer before, but now...I am an ADDICT! I am hooked,” he professed. “The Saving Strokes program did more for me than all my doctors combined—both physically and psychologically. I may not be very good, but you can bet that I’m having more fun than anyone else.”

AT&TJuniorGolfAssociation,PebbleBeachThe AT&T Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association is a local non-profit organization created in 1988 to introduce the game of golf to young people between the ages of 6 and 17 who live and attend school in Monterey County. The Association now has approximately 1,300 junior golfers who have benefited from the various activities offered by the association. Programs are conducted exclusively by volunteers and include clinics, tournaments, Clubs for Kids programs, summer lessons and scholarships. www.attpbjrgolf.com

HomeontheRangeThe Home on the Range junior golf program, lead by PGA Class A Professional and volunteer middle school coach Phil Green, is designed to bring golf to children of all income levels by building golf teams at public middle schools. All students are welcome to join. Green offers a fall program for girls and a spring program for boys. Each session runs 8-12 weeks and consists of two practices and one outing on the course per week. Through golf these children learn life skills that will make them stronger individuals. Home on the Range is based in Newcastle, CA. www.homeontherangegolf.com

JohnnyMillerJuniorGolfFoundation,NapaThe Johnny Miller Junior Golf Foundation was established to provide scholarships to boys and girls interested in playing high school and college golf and who see a future for themselves in the sport. Through these scholarships, the foundation is able to assist young people who may not otherwise have this opportunity.

TheBridgesFoundationBased in Novato and named after Patricia “Bridges” Kleinecke, the Bridges Foundation was created to assist San Francisco Bay Area public education and sports programs. Funds donated through The Langley directly support local public high school golf teams that cannot afford to travel to tournaments due to budget cuts. Keeping golf within the public schools is important for the kids, our communities, and the betterment of the game itself. Additional funds are used to expand physical education for young students including aging equipment, quality experts, nutrition, psychology, fitness, health and sports awareness.www.goodshepherdbridgesfoundation.org

Capital Insurance Group (CIG) has played an important role with the NCPGA Foun-dation and its The Langley, A Tribute to Legends fundraising event. This marks the second consecutive year CIG has been the title sponsor. Their involvement makes it possible to extend the impact to more programs in need of support. The support is not just monetary. CIG President and CEO, Peter Cazzolla, has even joined the Board of Directors for the NCPGA Foundation.

Some may ask—why golf? CIG is the leading western regional property and casualty insurer. They insure many of the golf courses in Northern California. As a result they have developed strong rela-tionships with many PGA Professionals and golf course operators. Over the years, they gradually became more entrenched in the golf community and wanted to contrib-ute on a community level, consistent with their corporate culture.

“Helping to give back to the game and those less fortunate in the local communi-ties we serve, through the Langley and the NCPGA Foundation, is very rewarding to me and all our CIG team members,” said Cazzolla.

The 2011 designated beneficiary for The Langley event is the Folds of Honor Foundation. Cazzolla, a former US Air

Force Captain, said, “While all the chari-ties we align CIG with are exceptional, I am personally pleased that the NCPGA Foundation has selected Folds of Honor as one of this year’s charitable recipient’s. As a military officer, I understand firsthand the challenges and needs of military fami-lies.” Other beneficiaries include Saving Strokes, The Langley Scholarship Fund, AT&T Junior Golf Association, Johnny Miller Junior Golf Foundation, Home on the Range, The Bridges Foundation, and the NCPGA Foundation.

BEGINNINGSWITHGOLFCIG’s involvement with Northern Cali-fornia golf extends to growing the game among young people as well by being a presenting sponsor for The Junior Tour of Northern California. Cazzola himself started playing golf as a young teenager.

He explains, “Golf was one of those sports that allured me, but it was not easily accessible for me. I had the opportunity to experience golf on a limited basis using my uncle’s old ‘hickory stick’ putter. We would dig holes in our backyard and putt around.”

Cazzolla continues, “One day, my best friend’s father invited me and his son to play a real round of golf on a public golf course. Collectively, we managed to put to-gether enough clubs to play a 9-hole round

and I experienced real golf for the first time. My best friend did not like the game, while I absolutely fell in love with it. So my friend’s father continued to invite me to play with him, once or twice a month, and I began learning how to play. I continue to have a ‘love of the game’ to this day and never pass up an opportunity to play, read about or discuss golf. Therefore to have the opportunity to be involved with the NCPGA and the Langley as well as to work with the PGA Professionals is a tremendous experience that surpasses my first beginnings with golf.”

Cazzolla’s passion is reflected in his business leadership as well. CIG continues to remain on the top in the insurance world. It is listed on the 2011 Ward’s 50 Top Performing Insurance Companies in the United States and is recognized for achieving outstanding results in the areas of safety, consistency, and financial perfor-mance over a five-year period (2006-2010).

“On behalf of the NCPGA Foundation, we would like to thank Peter Cazzolla and CIG for its ongoing support and partner- ship,” said Nancy Maul, managing director of the NCPGA Foundation. “Peter’s passion for supporting these worthwhile causes sets the tone for his organization as one that sees a bi-directional relationship with the local community.”

It was a beautiful evening on August 29 when Northern California’s golfing community came out to honor legends of the game at the prestigious Silverado Resort & Spa. This historic gem in the Napa valley was the backdrop for the 4th Annual The Langley, A Tribute to Legends where the NCPGA Foundation honored Johnny Miller and RJ Harper, PGA. The Langley Event is a fundraising

golf and social event designed to honor the game’s legends where proceeds are donated to community programs. The participation of Miller and Harper shine a spotlight on these worthwhile causes.

“Through the PGA TOUR and through my own Johnny Miller Junior Golf Foun- dation, I have always tried to exemplify the high standards of the game and our responsibility to give back to the commu-

nity,” said Johnny Miller. “I am honored that I can help these tremendous organiza-tions through the Langley and the NCP-GA Foundation.”

RJ Harper added, “I feel so privileged to be a part of the Langley tradition and all the great work that the NCPGA Founda-tion does through its support of education and programs for the underserved.”

Johnny Miller grew up in San Francisco and his accomplishments in golf are legendary, beginning with his victory in the 1964 U.S. Junior Amateur at age 17. He then had a successful college career at Brigham Young University. As a 19-year-old amateur, Miller finished eighth at the 1966 U.S. Open. He turned pro in 1969. He won twice on the PGA Tour and later at the 1973 U.S. Open Championship at Oakmont, PA, with a final-round 63, which led him to the first of his two major cham-pionships. It was voted the greatest single round of all time during golf’s Centennial Celebration in 1996.

In 1974, Miller won eight tournaments,

the money title and the Player of the Year award. He won four more times in 1975. His victory in the 1975 British Open and 24 victories on the PGA Tour were instru-mental in his enshrinement in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1996.

The World Golf Hall of Fame says: “In golf’s modern era, it’s commonly under-stood that no player has ever achieved the brief but memorable brilliance of Johnny Miller. (In 1974-75) Miller hit the ball consistently closer to the flag than any player in history. At his best, Miller’s game was marked by incredibly aggressive and equally accurate iron play.”

Miller is now in the broadcast booth as

the golf analyst for NBC Sports. In addition to his broadcasting, Miller owns a golf course design company, a golf academy, and has made numerous golf instruction-al videos. He recently purchased a part ownership in the Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa, the host site of this year’s Langley event.

His love for junior golf remains a full-time commitment as he founded the Johnny Miller Junior Golf Foundation. It is a way to continue to grow the game of golf among young people and give back to the community. Miller has made his mark in golf in so many ways and his impact continues.
