Where we workWhat we do and how we work

NCA is a faith-based organisation working for global justice. Our goal is to empower the poor and challenge the privileged. This work is carried out with no intention of influencing people’s religious affiliation.

In line with the NCA constitution and the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, assistance is provided unconditionally to all, based solely on needs and rights.

NCA works for global justice in three integrated ways:

1. Long-term development

NCA believes in empowering local urban and rural communities. As a partner and network organisation, we train and cooperate with communities and local organisations, so that they in turn can engage more people in achieving long term development gains.

2. Disaster preparedness and emergency response

We save lives through disaster preparedness and emergency interventions. In sudden onset disasters such as earthquakes, floods or conflict situations, NCA may intervene directly and temporarily to provide relief materials, safe water, sanitation facilities and hygiene awareness.

3. Advocacy

We promote peace, democracy and human rights through advocacy with policy-makers and opinion-leaders, including religious leaders, for just and lawful decisions, especially to protect girls, boys and women.

NCA in Pakistan

NCA has worked in Pakistan since 1981. In the beginning, programme activities supported Afghan refugees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

In more recent years, NCA has responded to natural disasters, providing humanitarian assistance to people affected by the 2005 earthquake and the 2010 floods. After operating from Peshawar and later Kabul, NCA established a Pakistan country office in Islamabad in 2007.

NCA works with local partners whose invaluable dedication and contribution makes it possible to reach and assist people in an effective way.

In Pakistan, we manage programmes in three thematic areas: Ÿ Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and Disaster Risk

Reduction (DRR)Ÿ Gender Justice Ÿ Peacebuilding

1. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

NCA specialises in providing safe drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, and hygiene awareness to people affected by disaster. We also rehabilitate infrastructure and support long-term development in water and sanitation, especially for marginalised urban and rural communities.

Our expert gender-mainstreaming staff help ensure the participation of girls, boys, women and men in all phases of project management.

From 2014, NCA will strengthen the resilience of flood-prone communities in Sindh, through women-centred and conflict-sensitive DRR interventions.

2. Gender Justice

NCA works to empower women to be active citizens. In particular, we are committed to combatting gender-based violence. Our priorities are to improve women’s access to inheritance, choice in marriage, and protection from domestic violence.

Activities include awareness raising, support to survivors of violence, and advocacy with a wide range of influential stakeholders including authorities and religious leaders.

3. Peacebuilding

NCA actively works with faith communities on peacebuilding in Pakistan. Faith community structures constitute an important part of civil society in Pakistan, and represent a great potential resource for peacebuilding.

At the request of Muslim and Christian leaders in Pakistan, NCA has and will continue to facilitate dialogue and cooperation between different religious communities, and other civil society organisations, to support their efforts to contribute to a safe and more peaceful society for all citizens.

“I have decided to let my daughter marry according to her own choice. For a woman like me, who has lived a life of dependence, injustice and suffering, I am not going to let the SAP-PK (NCA implementing partner) initiative go to waste. I will support women’s consent to marriage and their property rights till the day I die.”
