Undergraduate Resume Booklet 2013/2014
Authored by: Michael H Cheung
Foreword
Solving the recruitment conundrum is one of the current issues the global mining industry is
facing. An estimated number of 10,000 new workers will be needed over the next 10 years as estimated
by the Mining Association of Canada. Through the engagement with miners of tomorrow, mining
companies can benefit from building up their own talent by looking at graduating students.
This booklet is a compilation of current resumes that were submitted by interested
undergraduate students that are currently enrolled in the Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering
Program at the University of British Columbia. Undergraduate students’ resumes have been collected to
create this booklet which serves as a source for professionals within the mining industry looking for
upcoming talent.

TECHNICAL PROJECTS March 2013 Coarse Tailings Structure Redesign • Constructed 3D alternate designs for a major coarse tailings structure utilizing Mincom Minescape/Open Cut to provide
Operations with increased operating area on each lift • Conducted comparisons between alternate designs and the original design via volume by triangulation to assess the
effects the alternate designs can potentially have on scheduling • Composed a report that contained the findings from the constructed alternate designs and submitted the results to the
Senior Geotechnical Engineer August 2012 Spoil Access & Highwall Design • Designed potential waste dumps and their ramp accesses for a prospective open pit resource shell using MineSight 3D
to assess the feasibility of mining the respective area • Designed a highwall shell and multiple options of corresponding access ramp • Determined that the ramp designs were infeasible according to the mine design standards • Presented the results to my supervisor, superintendents and mine general manager, and recommended an alternate
option for the ramp access (ie. Contractors) June 2012 Inpit/Expit Waste Sequence Optimization • Modified the waste haul destinations of three pits to minimize haulage costs • Created modified haul strings using MineSight 3D and calculated the Effective Flat Haul (EFH) value for each string • Calculated the amount of weighted average EFH saved and then performed a cost saving analysis on the results • Presented the project results to my supervisor, superintendents and mine general manager VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE Jan 2012 – Apr 2012 UBC Norman B. To whom it may Concern:
During the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Robert Leigh worked for me as youth volunteer on the slip crew for the
women’s alpine ski events. Our Job was to help ensure that the track and hill were kept in race condition throughout the
event. Due to difficult weather conditions the slip crew was asked to work extra hours above the regularly scheduled 8
hour shifts. We were often required to start as early as 3:30am and work up to 14 hour shifts in adverse weather
conditions. Throughout the event Robert was always on time for his scheduled shifts and often volunteered to work
longer hours when it was required. He was a very hard worker and was quick to learn his roll on the slip crew. I was
very impressed with the commitment, motivation and work ethic that Robert gave to the slip crew. I believe that he
would make a valuable contribution to any team and would not hesitate to work with him in the future.
Sincerely,
Brady Holliday
