INTRODUCTION

Dear Student The 2015 Senior Subject Selection booklet outlines the subjects available to you for next year. It gives information about the qualifications you can work towards and about how subjects lead into those that can be taken in subsequent years. The decisions you make now will impact on your future so it is important to consider them carefully. We strongly recommend that you take the time to plan your whole course of study for Years 11–13 so that you know where you are heading and what you must do to get there. It is also important that you understand what qualification you may gain from each of your chosen subjects. Gather as much information as you can and discuss the available options with your parents/caregivers. There are also a number of people at school who can offer you advice. These include your subject teacher, form teacher, a head of department, dean, careers advisor, or a member of the senior management team. QUALIFICATIONS IN THE SENIOR SCHOOL

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

To complete an NCEA certificate students must earn credits. They attain credits by meeting standards in their chosen subject areas. Some standards, such as practical work, will be assessed internally by the school. Others will be assessed nationally in external examinations. Credits may be gained by achieving either achievement standards or unit standards. LEVEL ONE CERTIFICATE

Students need to gain 80 credits from Level 1 or higher. Of those 80 credits, 10 must be literacy credits which are gained from specified

achievement standards available through a range of subjects, and 10 must be numeracy credits available mainly through Mathematics.

LEVEL TWO CERTIFICATE

Students need to gain 80 credits. Of these, 60 must be from Level 2 or higher. The remaining 20 credits may come

from Level 1. Students must also have met the Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements.

LEVEL THREE CERTIFICATE

Students need to gain 80 credits. Of these, 60 must be from Level 3 or higher. The remaining 20 credits may come

from Level 2. Students must also have met the Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements.

NB: Level 3 courses are academically demanding and require specific pre-requisites.

Completing NCEA Level 2 does not guarantee entry into Level 3 subjects. For some students, broadening their Level 2 qualifications will be a more appropriate choice.

CERTIFICATE ENDORSEMENT

Students are able to achieve Level 1, 2 or 3 NCEA with Merit or Excellence Certificate Endorsements.

Merit Endorsement at a particular level requires 50 credits at “merit” or “excellence” at that level or higher.

Excellence Endorsement at a particular level requires 50 credits at “excellence” at that level or higher.

Students can accumulate merits and excellences over more than one year and their record will be checked annually to determine whether they are entitled to an endorsement of any NCEA certificate.

SINGLE SUBJECT ENDORSEMENT

Students who perform exceptionally well in individual courses are recognised with a

course endorsement at Merit or Excellence.

The course name is the school name for the course. The endorsement is at the lowest level where the merits and excellences necessary come from.

To gain an endorsement for a course students must gain all of the following:

o 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence from the course;

o at least 3 credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards (Visual Arts and Physical Education are the exception); and

o the necessary credits in a single school year.

NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship is a monetary award to recognise top Level 3 students.

It does not earn credits towards a qualification, but does appear on a student’s Record of Achievement.

Scholarship in each subject can be gained at two levels, either ‘Scholarship’ or ‘Outstanding Performance’.

Candidates may enter scholarship in one or more subjects and this decision is made during the year.

Students interested in scholarship should discuss it with their teachers early in the year.

SUBJECT SELECTION EVENING

2015 Year 11-13 students and their parents are invited to attend the Subject Selection Evening in the Hall on Wednesday 20 August, 7.00 – 9.00 pm.

This will be an opportunity to gather more information about each subject offered and to talk to the relevant teaching staff.

ENTRANCE TO UNIVERSITY

This is the minimum requirement for entry to university, or for degree and some diploma courses at polytechnics. To qualify for University Entrance through NCEA students need to achieve the following:

NCEA Level 3 Three subjects at Level 3 or above, made up of:

o 14 credits each, in three approved subjects Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:

o 5 credits in reading o 5 credits in writing

Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: o Achievement standards – specified achievement standards available

through a range of subjects, or o Unit standards – package of three numeracy unit standards (26623,

26626, 26627 – all three required) Approved subjects can be found in the student section of the NCEA website under the

University Entrance heading. Most universities are now ranking students for entry based on Level 3 Achievement

Standards from approved subjects and require a Preferential Entry Score. It is vital that students check the website of the university they wish to attend to ensure that they understand their specific entry criteria.

Each university may have additional requirements for entry to specific courses. It is

advisable to see the Careers Advisor or contact the University directly to check requirements.

University Entrance for International students may differ and students are therefore

COST OF QUALIFICATIONS

NZQA sets fees each year; as a guide, 2015 fees are likely to be:

o NCEA Levels 1, 2 & 3: $76.70 (International Students $383.30).

o Scholarship: $30.00 per subject (International Students $102.20 per

scholarship).

There is considerable financial assistance for parents/caregivers who:

o Receive a Work and Income benefit ($20 individual; $30 family).

o Have a Community Services Card ($20 individual; $30 family).

o Have more than 2 children undertaking NCEA qualifications in the same year (maximum fee of $200).

YEAR LEVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBJECT SELECTION

YEAR 11 STUDENTS

MUST TAKE 6 subjects (3 compulsory and 3 of choice). Compulsory subjects are: English/Te Reo, Mathematics, Science plus Core Physical

Education (2 periods per week). May choose from Level 1, 2 or 3 subjects. Must meet subject pre-requisites as outlined in the course information.

YEAR 12 STUDENTS

MUST TAKE 6 subjects. English is compulsory (unless studying Journalism or exempted by the HOD). May choose from Level 1, 2 or 3 subjects. Must meet subject pre-requisites as outlined in the course information.

YEAR 13 STUDENTS

MUST TAKE 5 subjects (home study for the 6th subject). No compulsory subjects. May choose from Level 1, 2 or 3 subjects. Must meet subject pre-requisites as outlined in the course information. Students considering tertiary study must ensure that the course selected meets the

tertiary entry requirements.

GUIDANCE FOR COURSE SELECTION

Remember: To check the pre-requisites of the subject you are choosing. Mathematics and Sciences beyond Level 1 are basic requirements for many careers. To choose wisely concentrate on what you need for your future. Get advice discuss subjects with teachers/deans/parents. NOTE: Courses advertised in this booklet may not run if there are insufficient numbers of students interested to make them viable. It is, therefore, important that students include back-up choices when completing their Subject Selection forms.
