ExtensionsAn exciting range of challenging and enjoyable extensions is offered to complement the junior core programme. This ensures a well-balanced programme that offers students plenty of choice when specialising in the Senior School.

Outdoor EducationOutdoor education aims to build self-confidence, teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills. It is offered as an optional subject at all year levels. All Year 10 students are further extended by undertaking a 3-day journey with Whenua Iti Outdoors through tramping, mountain biking and caving.

Vocational Pathways : Pre-Apprenticeship Training As well as offering NCEA, Nayland prepares students for specialist National Certificates through pre-apprenticeship and industry-based training. Innovative courses such as Tourism, Hospitality, Automotive Engineering, Engineering, Building and Construction and Hair and Beauty are often delivered in partnership with local employers and tertiary providers.

Trades AcademyNayland College is the lead provider of the award-winning Top of the South Trades Academy. Students in Years 12 and 13 have the opportunity to commence their training toward a trade whilst still at school. There is a wide range of trades available and, because Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and Whenua-iti are our tertiary partners, there is a smooth transition for these students into a full trades course.

Learning ExtensionAcademically able students are encouraged to study at the level best suited to their abilities and many tackle multi-level courses. Accelerate classes operate and many extension opportunities are provided and encouraged.

Tutorial AssistanceAll senior students receive a variety of extra assistance in preparation for their exams and help is provided for students requiring reader/writers. Remedial courses are supported by learning assistants and qualified staff assist identified individuals and groups. Specialist English classes run for non-English-speaking students.

Special Needs SupportAn extensive range of strategies support students with particular learning needs. These are overseen by Nayland’s Special Needs Coordinator. The Learning Support Centre is a specialised facility for students with moderate learning needs.

Instrumental TuitionThe College offers students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through the itinerant music programme and the Music Academy classes. Qualified tutors provide tuition for an extensive variety of instruments. Most orchestral instruments are available for hire subject to availability and include violin, viola, cello, double bass, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, bassoon and oboe.

Overseas ExchangesNayland College offers a variety of international exchange programmes and has sister school relationships with schools in Japan, Chile, Thailand and Brazil.

International StudentsNayland College hosts international students from all over the world and they contribute to our diverse culture. International students select subjects from our varied curriculum. Subjects range from the more traditional; Mathematics, Biology, History and Languages to more specialised subjects like Hospitality, Marine Science, Psychology, Journalism and the very popular Outdoor Education programmes that Nayland College is renowned for. We offer specialist English classes, including Cambridge English, which cater for the specific English requirements of our international students. International students are encouraged to participate fully in all aspects of school life including co-curricular sporting, academic and cultural activities. In November a special end-of-year programme runs for those who are not sitting NCEA exams.

Educational ActivitiesNayland College offers international students a range of opportunities outside the classroom to experience what Nelson and New Zealand has to offer. Students are able to do outdoor education activities, attend guided tours of the North and South Islands, go on ski trips, and celebrate the friendships and relationships that they form with students and teachers at the social occasions such as dances, the School Ball and the International farewell function “The Last Supper”.

Pastoral CarePastoral Care is a strength of our programme. Nayland College has been awarded the New Zealand International Educational Excellence Award for Pastoral Care. We have a strong focus on looking after our students and meeting their educational and social needs. A Homestay Co-ordinator matches and monitors all homestay placements and an International Student Adviser is available to counsel students.
