Dear Members, Did you get a chance to paint this summer? It can be a busy time of year with travel, family or even medical procedures. For some, that hour or two you thought you’d have each day to paint on vacation can somehow evaporate. I take my small kit on trips with the best of intensions and come back with very few examples. Others dedicate their summer months to painting excursions or quiet studio time. Lucky them! I hope you got to visit some art museums or art fairs and came away inspired. Now that it’s September, NAWS is here to contribute to your art life. I’ve been working with Programs chair Pat Dunham to line up programs to suit a variety of interests. Membership chair Susan Johnson and I have some ideas for the monthly meeting and how to attract new members. All the Board folks have used part of their summer to work on their responsibilities for a great 2018/19 season. We have such a good team. The September meeting is one you won’t want to be late for. Jeanette and Techla will have the new DVD titles out, there’s art supply gems to find at our “Too Much Art Stuff Sale”, make sure you get a slot in your favorite workshop and a cup of coffee while the pot’s full. The meeting will also include a digital show of the 2018 winning entries from the National Watercolor Society. Most of all, catch up with your painting buddies and meet some new friends. See you soon, Marsha Owen

  • Workshops

In this 3-day workshop we will explore various techniques to strengthen your skills in watercolor landscape painting. Subjects covered will include: how to create a strong composition, the use of values to invoke a sense of light, and the manipulation of color for its full expressive effect. A demonstration will start each day, followed by individual painting and individualized guidance. This workshop is open to all levels, but some experience with watercolor will be helpful.

We will also explore ways to work with photo references so that they help, not dictate, your final painting.

    Cost:  Members $325 Non-members $360

He offers guidelines which encourage you to creatively interpret painting subjects in your own style. Painting demonstrations emphasize free flowing watercolor and cover a variety of subjects, including landscape, flowers, human figures or animals.

    Don Andrews May 14, 15, 16, 17, 2018

Landscape Color and Composition Learning to paint with watercolor should be fun! Don’s Landscape Workshop is geared specifically for artists eager to paint and study in a no-stress studio environment. Each day, Don will address a major visual concern; light, color, granulation, organizing nature and utilizing negative space are just a few subjects to be covered. Don’s class isn’t geared to any specific level of achievement; rather artists at all levels will benefit from a more personal understanding of the painting possibilities available in the exciting world of landscape painting. This workshop will be packed with demonstrations, discussions, individual help and personal and group critiques.

HELP WITH SCHOOL TEACHERS ART SUPPLIES

At the 2018 Northern Arizona Student Art Show, Made In Clarkdale asked the participating teachers to fill out a Wish List for their art classes. This is the first time they were asked directly about supplies. Watercolor supplies that several of them have asked for include:—Watercolor paints - tubes and/or liquid—Trays with 12 cups—Watercolor brushes - rounds and flats—Watercolor paper—Tabletop easels—Large easels

Our Art Supplies Yard Sale event is the September meeting.

Please bring your extra material and decide what you wish to sell and what you would donate. You may also bring new supplies and we'll see that they get to the teachers. "Your efforts to keep watercolor alive and well is having an effect. So anything you can do to help the teachers will be greatly appreciated." Deborah Downs, Made In Clarkdale, event coordinator

  • The Flagstaff critique group is mourning the death of Robert Dalegowski. We still half expect to see him at our gathering with an armful of paintings. He was right-on with kind suggestions to improve our work, we rarely critiqued his. Bob was exclusively a plein-air painter - no camera, no preliminary sketch, just an exact record of the place before him in perfect proportion and color – start to finish in 2 hours. His love was the Grand Canyon - he painted it every week. He knew it’s geology, every monument, trail and water feature because he experienced it since his youth. Bob was a member of NAWS for about 13 years. He came to almost every meeting, entered paintings every year and won numerous awards. He was our Paint-Out director for much of that time. I got to know Bob pretty well as a painting buddy and sharing shifts at the Artist Gallery. I’ve never met a more grounded, kind, humble person. We are fortunate as artists to not only have a friend but see the world though their eyes in their art. I’m so sad the paintings have stopped.

Robert Dalegowski died on June 17th at 70 years of age from acute myeloid leukemia.

Caption: This is his last studio painting and caption for Grand Canyon Celebration Of Art. A dedication to Bob will be on display there Sept. 15 – Jan. 21

River Of Stars 24” x 18”Deep below the rim, in the bottom of the Grand Canyon (soon to be an International Dark Sky Park), the horizon sky glow is obscured by soaring walls, the silence is broken by the muffled roar of Deer Creek Falls at Colorado River Mile 136.4, as magical starlight reflects from the dark river surface. Grand Canyon is one of the best places to observe the primordial star filled night sky and luminous cascade of our galaxy, the legendary Milky Way. This is the sky seen by our ancestors, with thousands of stars inspiring the art, science and religion of civilizations since the dawn of mankind.

It’s time to CLEAN OUT THAT STUDIO!!! The September meeting will begin with an EXTENDED SOCIAL TIME. Tables will be arranged so that each of you will have space to put out a few items that you’d like for another artist to have a chance to purchase. We look forward to seeing everyone and what items they may bring for our sale!!

Marsha Owen: I traveled to Boulder, Colorado in May to take part in the "Boulder Plein Air Festival" this was my first invitational. It required a city street quick draw and a minimum of 6 framed paintings created in a 5 day period. I was floored to receive a 2nd place and one painting sold.

"Jan Saunders and Mary Ann Undrill will be exhibiting their work at the Canyon Mesa Clubhouse in VOC from Oct. 10 through the end of December.  An artist “meet and greet” will be held Nov. 1.  Please stop in and enjoy this exhibit that includes many new works by both artists."

WELCOME NEW MEMBER  Wendy Breeden joined NAWS over the summer. We owe Sandy Beck & Cecilia Binkley a thanks for their sales job on NAWS. Wendy was a member of the Vermont Watercolor Society and has relocated to Sedona. She's going to be using more of the warm side of her palette now. Say hi to Wendy when you see her at the October meeting. (She's not passing up Sept. in Vermont)

Road Trip to Maine by Sandy Beck

This past summer, I decided to take a risk and drive solo to Maine. Because I was driving alone, I took a little over two weeks to arrive in Maine, stopping to visit friends, and to do some sight-seeing in Memphis and Gettysburg. Once in Maine, I spent one week in my home town of Bath, then one week in Rockport, and a third week in Belfast, where I was joined by Cathy Stedman. We were supposed to be taking a workshop with Mel Stabin, but the workshop got cancelled due to lack of students. Since we were not restrained by the class, we traveled all over, visiting many lighthouses. I have always loved lighthouses, and really enjoyed the opportunity to paint so many of them. The trip was so much fun, I’m going to do another in two years, covering the five states I have never visited.

Sue Johnson had a request from a professor in the Forestry

Department at NAU. He is looking for painters to create flora

and fauna plates (for pay) to be used in a book he is writing.

Please let Sue know if you might be interested in this project.

Sue will gather names and perhaps they can arrange a meeting

with him after one of our fall meetings to learn details.

Rose MoonMy book is now out and available on amazon.com/author/rosemoon.    It is a tale about a woman named Laurence Donahue, a college art professor and accomplished painter, whose life is interrupted when she is kidnapped, drugged, and transported to a remote place in the Sonoran Desert. Connected only by a chat line to a person or an AI called Max. she finds herself alone. She is ordered to paint anything she wishes in exchange for supplies, which are delivered by the same drones that pick up the paintings. You will join her on a magical adventure into her dreams and subconscious mind as she realizes that solitary confinement has it's own rules. Not knowing if her visitors are desert sorcery dreamers or figments of her imagination, she journeys into her own inner world to process her dark past, and learns of a future she hopes will become reality -- if she is ever released.

Terry Ann Morris' photograph “Radiance"was selected for the 56th Annual Juried Exhibit at The Hardy Galleryin Ephraim, Wisconsin, June 15 to July 15, 2018. The most notable of theHardy exhibits, this exhibit features a variety of media; painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics and mixed media. This exhibit offers emerging artists the opportunity to gauge their development and established artists the opportunity to explore new ideas and techniques. A fun fact is that Terry took this photograph while kayaking down the Mink River in Door County, Wisconsin. :-)
