SAN DIEGO Calif (NNS) -- Sailors assigned to the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 41Seahawks celebrated 170000 operational flight hours without a Class A mishap Jan 8

A Class A mishap is defined as an incident with a total cost of more than $1 million destroyed aircraftfatal injury or total disability HSM-41 which began service as Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light 41 in1983 has accumulated the hours over the course of the fleet replacement squadrons lifetime

HSM-41s Sailor of the Year Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 1st Class Cole Lindsay spoke about thesignificance of the milestone

There are four mishap classes with Class A being the most severe you could have Lindsay said Itsamazing that weve flown that exorbitant amount of hours without any serious problems for theamount of time that we have been commissioned Not many commands get that milestone

Sailors at HSM-41 work on the MH-60R an anti-ship anti-submarine helicopter keeping them flightready for any mission they may be tasked with

We train all of the replacement pilots and aircrewman for the fleet and then we send them out totheir corresponding squadrons said Lindsay We also do search-and-rescue If there is a ship indistress somebody in the water a canyon rescue or overland rescue we will go and pick them up

Lindsay said that his squadron places a huge emphasis on safety and attention to detail and identifiedtraining as a top priority for the squadrons future success

It takes everyone here training our junior personnel to do their jobs to keep heading in the rightdirection Lindsay said As long as we train our replacements the right way we are going to besuccessful

Aviation Machinists Mate Airman Apprentice Adriane Curran takes pride in the work that she doescontributing to the safe flight operations of her squadron

I deal directly with all the moving parts of the helicopter that make it fly so its really incredible tome said Curran It really makes me proud and I hope that I can contribute to the next 10000mishap free flight hours

Vice Adm Michael S Rogers spoke about the important role the IDC has in todays cyber-dependentworld and the important role education and training play in achieving the nations cyber defense goalsHe said that FCCC10F has made significant progress in promoting cyber situational awareness andintegrating cyberspace operations into traditional maritime operations

To preserve the Navys cyber warfighting advantage we must continue to develop an elite workforcethat is recruited trained and educated to better understand the maritime environment employ thelatest technology advances and deliver cyber warfighting capability anywhere around the world saidRogers

Rogers recognized that there were still substantial challenges to overcome due to the inherentcharacteristics and rapid technological change of the field He noted that the cyber community wasmaking significant progress in effecting changes and improvements to the field but it was up to every

USS JOHN C STENNIS At Sea (NNS) -- Personnel assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit(EODMU) 3 are training non-EOD Sailors in special operations tactics aboard the Nimitz-class aircraftcarrier USS John C Stennis (CVN 74)

Once a week Sailors selected by their division meet in the hangar bay for hands-on training for thenaval special warfare basic roper qualification

I want to offer something new for the hard working Sailors trying to better themselves andexperience something unique they can tell their friends and family about said Explosive OrdnanceDisposal Technician 1st Class Aaron Rickel from Ketchikan Alaska I want this to prove that doingmore than whats expected of you and being professional will pay off

Rickel began teaching the course with the assistance of other EOD technicians and plans to continueproviding training until every division aboard the ship gets an opportunity to attend

It was an amazing experience said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Lindsay Frizzel from Westchester NYIm glad I had the chance to try something like this underway

Rickel begins his training by teaching Sailors to rappel using a harness With this method anotherSailor called a belay uses his own body weight as a counterbalance to the descending Sailor

[Rickel] was very patient with everybody and worked with each of us individually until we werecomfortable enough to continue the training said Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Daniel Borboafrom Sierra Vista Ariz I had a blast going through the training

After Rickel is confident a Sailor is able to descend proficiently and safely the Sailor will be offeredtraining in more advanced methods including fast-roping

The final step in the naval special warfare basic roper training and qualification is to perform all of thetechniques from a helicopter in mid-flight and once qualified the Sailor will be eligible to participate in

any non-operational rappelling or fast-roping exercises

The John C Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSCSG) consisting of Stennis Carrier Air Wing 9 DestroyerSquadron 21 and guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) are forward deployed to the US 5thFleet Area of Responsibility to strengthen regional partnerships sustain maritime security and supportcombatant commander requirements for assets in the area

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center (FASWTC) announced Jan 9 thatits chapter of the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) was selected as the 2012Shore Chapter of the Year

Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm Scott Van Buskirk announced the selections via NavyAdministration (NAVADMIN) message FASWTCs Commanding Officer Capt Richard Thomas said thatFASWTCs CSADD chapter was selected from a field of fierce competitors and had set a pace for allcommands to emulate

Being recognized for this award is a remarkable achievement for our CSADD chapter said ThomasIm proud of its members and advisors who make it a top priority to ensure newly-minted Sailorsreceive a positive orientation before they head out to the fleet This recognition attests to their hardwork and dedication

CSADD is a peer-mentoring program that promotes positive decision making and helps build leadershipskills in junior Sailors The program seeks to educate and aid them in tackling issues such as alcoholmisuse and reckless driving and prevent destructive decision making

Chief Sonar Technician Chris Salisbury CSADD advisor said he is honored to have been given theopportunity to guide and support the group of young leaders

This self-paced course includes six lessons that enable Seabees and Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) officersto learn combat skills or refresh their skill-sets The lessons encompass the Naval Construction Force(NCF) and The Laws of Armed Conflict Medical Procedures and Personal Hygiene General MilitaryTactics Field Communications Force Protection and Combat Equipment and Weapons

MONTEREY Calif (NNS) -- The commander of US Fleet Cyber CommandUS 10th Fleet(FCCC10F) spent an afternoon addressing a contingent of Naval Postgraduate School (NPS)Information Dominance Corps (IDC) students during an all-hands call on the university campusJan 8

Vice Adm Michael S Rogers spoke about the important role the IDC has in todays cyber-dependent world and the important role education and training play in achieving the nationscyber defense goals He said that FCCC10F has made significant progress in promoting cybersituational awareness and integrating cyberspace operations into traditional maritime operations

To preserve the Navys cyber warfighting advantage we must continue to develop an eliteworkforce that is recruited trained and educated to better understand the maritime environmentemploy the latest technology advances and deliver cyber warfighting capability anywhere aroundthe world said Rogers

Rogers recognized that there were still substantial challenges to overcome due to the inherentcharacteristics and rapid technological change of the field He noted that the cyber communitywas making significant progress in effecting changes and improvements to the field but it was upto every member in the IDC to take steps to continue with these goals Rogers emphasized theimportance of training and educating the next generation of cyber warriors to tackle thechallenges of the future

I want us to be prepared for the challenges of the future said Rogers But its up to you tobecome the solution to take charge of our future and face those challenges

He also said it is imperative to maintain a highly motivated and highly trained force that cantackle any challenge that may arise and talked about the critical role NPS offers its students tosucceed in these efforts

With military cyber capabilities growing and changing so rapidly it is critical for IDC students tounderstand how cyber fits into the broader picture of national defense said Unrein Vice AdmRogers visit is a valuable chance for IDC officers at NPS to gain perspective into how theeducation and skills they gain here will be used in the cyber domain and how that domain isinterlinked with operations in other warfighting domains such as air surface subsurface andland

USS JOHN C STENNIS At Sea (NNS) -- Personnel assigned to Explosive Ordnance DisposalMobile Unit (EODMU) 3 are training non-EOD Sailors in special operations tactics aboard theNimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C Stennis (CVN 74)

Once a week Sailors selected by their division meet in the hangar bay for hands-on training forthe naval special warfare basic roper qualification

I want to offer something new for the hard working Sailors trying to better themselves andexperience something unique they can tell their friends and family about said ExplosiveOrdnance Disposal Technician 1st Class Aaron Rickel from Ketchikan Alaska I want this toprove that doing more than whats expected of you and being professional will pay off

Rickel began teaching the course with the assistance of other EOD technicians and plans tocontinue providing training until every division aboard the ship gets an opportunity to attend

It was an amazing experience said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Lindsay Frizzel fromWestchester NY Im glad I had the chance to try something like this underway

Rickel begins his training by teaching Sailors to rappel using a harness With this methodanother Sailor called a belay uses his own body weight as a counterbalance to the descendingSailor

[Rickel] was very patient with everybody and worked with each of us individually until we werecomfortable enough to continue the training said Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class DanielBorboa from Sierra Vista Ariz I had a blast going through the training

After Rickel is confident a Sailor is able to descend proficiently and safely the Sailor will beoffered training in more advanced methods including fast-roping

The final step in the naval special warfare basic roper training and qualification is to perform all ofthe techniques from a helicopter in mid-flight and once qualified the Sailor will be eligible toparticipate in any non-operational rappelling or fast-roping exercises

The John C Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSCSG) consisting of Stennis Carrier Air Wing 9Destroyer Squadron 21 and guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) are forward deployedto the US 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility to strengthen regional partnerships sustain maritimesecurity and support combatant commander requirements for assets in the area

PORT HUENEME Calif (NNS) -- The First Naval Construction Division (1NCD) announced Jan 9the activation of the Basic Combat Skills (BCS) Level I online training course on Navy e-Learning(NeL) via Navy Knowledge On-Line (NKO)

This self-paced course includes six lessons that enable Seabees and Civil Engineer Corps (CEC)officers to learn combat skills or refresh their skill-sets The lessons encompass the NavalConstruction Force (NCF) and The Laws of Armed Conflict Medical Procedures and PersonalHygiene General Military Tactics Field Communications Force Protection and CombatEquipment and Weapons

The official release of the BCS electronic training provides our Seabees another tool to attaincritical mission skills and knowledge at the time that is convenient for them said CaptStephanie Jones 1NCD assistant chief of staff for training

This is a great course said Mitchell The interactive learning environment prepares personnelnew to the NCF for more advanced courses like BCS Level II and fire team leader

Until its launch on NeL the BCS course had only been available in an instructor-led classroomenvironment Designed to enhance individual and team decision-making and combateffectiveness the e-learning course supplies up-to-date information to Seabees using the latesttechnology

Project manager Chief Builder Petty Officer Jason Verneris training specialist for the NavalFacilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Training Support Agency stressed that it is vital to thethe Seabee mission for personnel to stay abreast of the latest combat technology in order toensure Seabees deploying around the world are prepared for present day challenges

The intent of this course is to allow the user to be able to train and become familiar with theNCF and its capabilities said Verneris Navy e-Learning facilitates a self-paced interactivelearning environment anywhere - anytime

This online training tool is designed to support personnel reporting to NCF commands andstudents attending the CEC Officer School (CECOS) Basic class and A School courses Eachlesson takes an average of two to five hours to complete upon successful completion of the sixlesson assessments the program generates a completion certificate and updates the membersSailorMarine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART) and is reflected in theFleet Training Management and Planning System (FLTMPS) The SMART update can take up totwo weeks to appear while FLTMPS is generally updated nightly

The BCS course includes hyperlinks to up-to-date references a glossary an acronymdefinitionlist and displays graphic images of commonly used forms and documents

The first part of Operation Trident Arch Jan 7-14 is underway at Naval Weapons StationsYorktown-Cheatham Annex

Trident Arch is a Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command (NEMSCOM) operation thatrotates Fleet Hospitals and Expeditionary Medical Facilities from prepositioned storages sitesworld-wide ashore and afloat for service life extension

Fifty-six Sailors from Navy Cargo Handling Battalion (NCHB) 1 Navy Expeditionary LogisticsSupport Group are working with 44 soliders from the US Army 149th Seaport OperationsCompany (SOC) 10th Transportation Battalion 7th Sustainment Brigade Fort Eustis Va to loadMilitary Sealift Command ship MV Black Eagle

Trident Arch enables NEMSCOM to upgrade and retrofit prepositioned hospitals and medicalfacilities with certified extended life service within a maintenance cycle of five years whiledeployed to all strategic location world-wide

This containerized fleet hospital will rotate our prepositioned storage sites headed to PacificCommand and can accommodate 450 patient beds and 452 units of supporting equipment saidConstruction Mechanic 1st Class David Riggs NEMSCOM port operations coordinator

The mission of NEMSCOM is to plan and execute the design acquisition assembly integrationstorage shipment maintenance and life cycle support of Navy deployable medical systems andact as a technical advisor for deployment of these assets

We are tasked to control the route and transport 633 containers from the NEMSCOM yard to pierside We also provided drivers to operate and transport 452 rolling stocks said 2nd Lt DannyFerucci officer in charge 149th SOC

The presentation highlighted Rear Adm C Forrest Faison IIIs two day visit to Naval HospitalBremerton and associated Branch Health Clinics at Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor Puget SoundNaval Shipyard and Naval Station Everett

This commendation just documents what we already know The MUC recognizes a great team Itis a real privilege to see such an incredible team provide medical help to our Sailors Marines andfamilies Every day you rise to the occasion I am so incredibly proud of you On behalf of allthose you help thank you said Faison

Faison also held several all-hands Admirals calls dined with approximately 20 recently returnedIndividual Augmentee staff members and met with current residents in NHBs Puget SoundFamily Medicine Graduate Medical Education program He also met with NHB Sailors and civiliansof the quarter and year

Capt Christopher Culp NHB commanding officer notified NHB staff members last month onreceiving the commands second commendation The initial MUC was awarded for meritoriousservice from Dec 1 1996 to Dec 31 1999 for providing timely compassionate care in NavyRegion Northwest as well as meeting readiness mission needs while deployed to Haiti with FleetHospital 5

As we haul down the previous MUC that has flown for the past 10 years it has transcended timeand become part of the fabric of the command The command itself has maintained thepersonality and presence that encompasses what the MUC stands for and this MUC is a directreflection of Capt (Mark) Broukers tenure and accomplishments said Culp

The Meritorious Unit Commendation for Naval Hospital Bremerton covered the period July 1 2008through Sept 30 2011 which was during Navy Medicine West Chief of Staff Broukers previoustour and 3-year tenure as NHBs commanding officer from July 18 2008 to Aug 4 2011

The current MUC covered all staff assigned to all active duty component unit identification codes(UIC) within the hospital The citation signed for the Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus by Chiefof Naval Operations Adm Jonathan W Greenert recognized personnel of NHB consistentlydemonstrated exceptional patient and family centered care graduate medical education and fleetsupport while meeting its readiness mission The citation also cited exceptional performance inmultiple areas including dental readiness graduate medical education excellence fleet supporttsunami support environmental excellence and patient care
