• Barcoding on line at Library

By JOC J. Wandres, USNR

Barcodes, those ubiquitous stri~ of vertical lines attached to virtually every product for sale, are now being used with nearly all circulating materials within the Dudley Knox Library, according to Leslie Navari, readers services librarian.

The new service, dedicated on 29 July, is the cuhnination of a project begun in 1988, when the library's 250,000 titles began to be entered by a civilian contractor into a computer-readable database.

The database was named BOSUN (Bibliographic Online Service-Utilis Nautis). When tied into the barcode system, it is possible to track the status of nearly all materials in the library. The system is user friendly and, for the library staff, a more efficient way to manage inventory control. The Research Reports

about 20 IBM 3278 terminals on the campus. The computer center is working to install a system which will let any llsel'

with a PC and a modem access BOSUN from their desk.

Some non-barcoded materials must still be checked out using a temporary record, at least until they are returned and can be barcoded.

Because some students and faculty keep materials out for one or more quarters, Navari urges those with nonbarcoded books and books checked out before July 29 to return them long enough to be entered into the system, so that the circulation infonnation will become accurate as soon as possible.

sailing championship by Rick Dau, Commodore NPSSA

T he NPS sailing club entry sailed past entries from several other Pacific Coast.commands to

claim first place overall in a six-race regatta held on Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Treasure Island Naval Base.

The Central Pacific Regional Sailing Championships were open to all Navy, Marine and Coast Guard commands on the Pacific coast Entries from NAS Moffett Field, NAS Alameda, Treasure Island, Oak Knoll, Coast Guard San Francisco and NROTC USC gathered along with the NPS entry to do battle in Rhodes 19's.

The event was sponsored by the Treasure Island Yacht Club.

The race was held in light to moderate winds with the crews changing boats after each race. On the first race the NPS crew of Dave Simpson, Doug Larat and Ed Flanagan unknowingly drew what turned out to be the slowest boat of the fleet, and after a perfect start, finished in sixth place. (That particular boat fi'\ished last every time.) However, with a different boat for each race, they went on to take three first place, a second place and a third place finish to win the championship.

The NPS sailing club is open to all students and faculty at NPS. A fleet of nine
