OCEANOGRAPHY PROF. CHIU RECIPIENT OF MENNEKEN AWARD

Oceanography Prof. Ching-Sang Chiu received the Carl E. and Jessie W. Menneken Award for Excellence in Scientific Research during commencement exercises last month.

Chiu was recognized for his pioneering work in acoustic tomography, a method that greatly speeds up the sampling rate for oceanographic data. The new oceanographic data acquisition system was tested in a study of the Barents Sea in August. Conditions in the Barents Sea, which is above the Arctic Circle, result from a complex mix of water from the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Oceanographers from NPS, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Science Applications International Corporation are using the new methods to characterize and understand the conditions that cause dramatic changes in the Barents Sea Polar Front.

Acoustic tomography provided temperature and salinity data in the study region every five minutes. Sampling with traditional physical oceanographic methods required as much as eight hours in the same region. The acoustic method has the potential to revolutionize the way in which physical oceanographers conduct fi~ld studies because it enables them to use an Ethernet link to telemeter data 50-100 times faster than present techniques allow.

Chiu, a native of Hong Kong, joined the NPS faculty in December 1989. He received a Sc.D. in oceanographic engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1985 and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1979.

NPS GRAD NAMED

Dl~a~~!?!~~~~~w~PS . received a master's degree in aeronautical engineering at NPS in 1972, has been named director of flight crew operations at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The appointment will make Leestma "one of the most influential managers in the nation's piloted space program," according to a recent report in Space News.

Leestma will be responsible for approving shuttle crews, making key assignments and helping define the flight

: rules that will govern space station .. •.· . operations. His duties will include

"resolving issues with vehicle systems, payloads, experiments, crew equipment and flight rules," stated center Director Aaron Cohen.

Leestma is a veteran astronaut with more than 500 hours of space flight experience on three shuttle missions. His last flight was aboard Atlantis in early 1992. His first shuttle mission was aboard the Challenger in October 1984. During that flight, he and astronaut • Kathryn Sullivan set the early space record for length of an extravehicular activity (EV A). Their 3-l(l. hour EV A demonstrated the feasibility of satellite refueling in space.
