Is ThIs Our LAsT (PrINTed) FLyer? We’re not sure—but we’re thinking it could be.

Don’t worry—the Nautical Mind itself is not disappearing! But we are wondering if

it’s time to change how we tell you about new books each fall. And we’d like it if you

help us make a decision.

As longtime customers know, the Nautical Mind has a history of early adoption

where computers are concerned. Our shop was one of the first bookstores in the country

to have a computerized database, and among the leaders in having an online presence.

We continue to develop and expand our website, too, as new opportunities come up.

But throughout our history, we’ve also kept an allegiance to print, first by publishing

a print catalogue every few years (before websites existed), and later by issuing annual

updates—one of which was our fall flyer. In fact, we’ve been producing and mailing this

flyer since 2001.

Now we’re thinking it may be time to go all digital. There are clear advantages for us,

of course: we reduce our printing and mailing costs, and we save a few trees in the pro-

cess. But here’s the key question: what do our customers want? How much do you value re-

ceiving a printed flyer each fall? Are you just as happy if it’s replaced by the PDF version?

(If you’ve used it, you know that the PDF document has advantages, as well: you simply

click on the title you want and you link to our main site’s online ordering process.)

We’re thinking we may simply mail (or email) a note, in coming years, alerting cus-

tomers each fall about the array of new titles and gift choices available—and we’d post

that flyer on our site. But we’d also like to make the print flyer available to any customers

who would like it.

We’ll be mulling this decision over in the coming months. If you have a preference,

drop us a line at [email protected]. Or stop by our booth at the Toronto Interna-

tional Boat show (Booth G 545, January 12th to 20th, 2013). We’d love to have your input,

as we consider the options.

nauticalmind.com– The Online Road to Our ShopAnd now, for all of you who shop long-distance, here’s a shameless plug for our website! Have you noticed that:

• the search function has been improved

• the site is updated weekly• it’s available in 66 languages

(thank-you, Google)• it’s a huge selection of books about

boats (and ships! and more!), all in one place

• it makes online shopping a breeze• there’s a section for gift books, and

for sale books…• … and you can buy gift certificates,

too• this flyer’s posted in PDF format,

with live links to each book • and there’s a link to our blog, with

contributions from our authors and helpful advice

And if the personal touch is needed, the same friendly knowledgeable staff members you’ll meet in the shop are there at the end of the phone line, to answer your questions, and expedite your service, seven days a week.

Clockwise from left to right: Peter, Dorothy, Nancy, Sari, Ross and Blue

Nautical Charts & Cruising Guides Don’t Leave Home Without Them

Charting a Course: Let Us Help You Find Your Way and Get LegaldId yOu KNOw—In Canada, the Charts and Nautical Publications Regulations, 1995 clearly require all vessels to carry up-to-date, corrected paper charts for all the waters they travel in, as well as current Notices to Mariners, Lists of Lights, Radio Aids to Marine Navigation, Sailing Directions, and, where applicable, tide tables. These charts and publications, including digital charts, are available and in stock at the Nautical Mind, as we are agents for the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

What if you are travelling outside Canadian waters? We can still help. We are agents for American NOAA charts, and sell Imray charts for the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. We can also order British Admiralty charts, charts for Danish waters, and French nautical charts.

If you’re heading to the Intracoastal Waterway, or cruising in Cuba, the Bahamas, or the Caribbean, chartbooks are convenient, economical, and give you comprehensive coverage of the waters and anchorages. Many of them also include digital versions of the charts and sailing directions.

The Nautical Mind’s website lists thousands of charts, as well as links to the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s chart catalogues (PDF format) and our own suggested lists of charts and cruising guides for specific areas, down the right-hand side of our chart pages. We stock all the resources listed, and are happy to discuss your needs. Our years of experience are at your service, helping you choose the right charts and guides for your cruise.

Jimmy Cornell is the undisputed world authority on long distance voyaging. He is the founder of the ARC transatlantic rally (now in its 27th year), the author of several reference books found aboard all offshore cruising vessels, and has 200,000-plus miles of sea experience that includes three circumnavigations. It is no surprise that sailors of all kinds, from armchair to world famous, know his name and turn to him for trustworthy advice. And possibly it is also no surprise that his family—wife Gwenda, daughter Doina, son Ivan—have also turned their attention to sharing their knowledge and experience through books.

Here is a selection of what the members of this first family of sail have pro-duced. The Nautical Mind stocks all their current titles.

The Cornell family visited 54 countries, sailed more than 68,000 miles, and travelled roughly the same distance ashore. Manchester Liners: Great Lakes Pioneers by Ron Beaupré & Skip GillhamThis instalment in a long-running series of lakeboat histories profiles the Manchester Liners fleet, founded in 1898. Its appearance was closely linked to the construction of the 35-mile Manchester Ship Canal, which enabled the city of Manchester in northern England to become a world port. Within weeks the fledgling navy had defeated their seasoned English counterparts in several sea battles. But these were followed by three stunning single-ship engagements, won by the Brit-ish. Perilous Fight by Stephen BudianskyBudiansky’s history of the ocean battles celebrates the surprising victories of the upstart American Navy over the legendary Royal Navy and explores how the war changed the thinking about military tactics, set a precedent for insurgency war-fare, and established America as a world power.448pp. softcover 2012 $0.50

The War of 1812 changed America’s sense of itself, placed it on the world stage in a new light, and planted the seeds of a Canadian sense of identity and difference from our neighbour to the south. The war’s resolution also laid the foundation for the establishment of the longest peacefully shared border between nations, and marked the only time hostile naval action has been recorded in the Great Lakes. For these and many other reasons, the conflict continues to attract and hold the atten-tion of writers, artists, naval historians, and those who are fascinated by human endeavour—on the water, at war, and at peace.

Solitaire Spirit by Les PowlesAnother game British amateur, Powles only had eight hours of sailing experience when he decided to sail

solo around the world. In his 50s he built himself a yacht and made it across the Atlantic, though his navigation didn’t match his boatbuild-ing skills. He made landfall in Brazil though he was aiming for Barbados. Three complete solo circumnaviga-tions followed, all of them full of inci-dent. During the last he was given up for dead when he hadn’t been heard from for four months. So when he sailed up the Lymington River (aged 70) in a skeletal state his arrival caused a media frenzy. 304pp. softcover 2012 $18.00

Phoenix from the Ashes by Justin Ruthven-TyersAfter a fire destroyed their house, the author and his wife Linda decided the moment was right to build a 15-ton classic yacht out of wood. Complete amateurs, they began by finding the right trees… but working under the watchful eye of helpful local sheep farmers, how could they possibly fail? Once their lovely ship was built, they set off on a seven-year cruise to find hidden paradises and wildernesses in Scotland, France, Cornwall, and Ireland. The story also introduces you to the quirky but always entertaining characters who inhabit the coastal corners they lingered in. 240pp. softcover 2012 $16.50
