BA Mathematics (from Eastern) BS Engineering (from Villanova) Computer, Electrical, Civil, Mechanical

DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVESThe 3 + 2 agreement between Eastern and Villanova provides a student with the bestof both worlds; the intimacy of a small liberal arts Christian university for its core andmathematics, and the resources housed in a multi-million dollar facility for its engineering. Villanova University was ranked by U.S. News and Word Reportas one of the Top 10 Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in 2011. Students complete three years at Eastern, working through Eastern’s distinctiveliberal arts core, with its focus on faith, reason and justice, as well as the requiredmathematics and physics background. These are followed by two years at Villanova. At the end of the five-year program, students will receive two degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Eastern University and a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from Villanova University. DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVES • Strong undergraduate program with excellent track record: With a broad foun-

dation of required courses, the choice to focus among a shortlist of Biology corecourses and electives, and one to two years of Chemistry, students completing theprogram are often successful moving directly into graduate studies, or work in in-dustry or nonprofit research.

• Faculty Research and Service: Students can receive credit in directed researchprojects working with professors in their area of expertise

• Personalized teaching: Students have the opportunity for extensive faculty con-tact both during and outside of classes.

• Christian faith integration:We seek to integrate a Christian worldview - truth Godhas revealed in the Bible - with our study of the measurable.

• Labs and student research: Students have access to standard research equip-ment, such as laminar flow hoods for cell culture; fluorescent and scanning micro-scopes; thermal cyclers for PCR (polymerase chain reaction); and other tools forDNA and protein electrophoresis. In addition, Biology students have access to ourScanning Electron Microscope.

• Close to diverse research, internship and graduate study opportunities:Classes visit research programs at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, the

Museum of Natural History (NYC), the New YorkBotanical Garden, or the Philadelphia Academy

of Natural Sciences.

CAREER TRACKSA Biology degree will provide students with a broad scientificbackground, analytical skills, and critical thinking capabilitiesthat will allow them to thrive inwhatever endeavor they pursue. It will prepare them for graduatestudy in medicine, field biology and general biologyand employment in education, laboratory or fieldwork.

DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVES • Accreditation: Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (Exercise Science) and the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (Athletic Training).

• Faculty: Dedicated faculty bring integrity, expertise, commitment and Christian faith to the classroom. Faculty research includes obesity, low carbohydrate diets, body image, vascular responses to physiological stress and pathophysio- logical states, exercise-induced cardioprotection in a model of spontaneous hypertension.

• Success: 100% first time pass rate on the national Athletic Training Board of Certification Exam for the last three years.

• Facilities: State-of-the-art laboratory houses a variety of equipment: Bod Pod, Wingate Peak Monarch Cycle Ergometer and software; Cardiac Science Q Stress treadmill; metabolic cart; hydrostatic weighing tank.

• Curriculum, Practicum and Internship: Each program is enriched by major requirements that intentionally attend to verbal and written discourse in the discipline and research literacy. Students have opportunities to participate in

practicum or internship experiences to gain proficiency in the clinical skills of their respective disciplines. • Preparation for Graduate Studies in

Occupational and Physical Therapy: Regular, comprehensive, and individualized student advising of all pre-professional students ensures the required course study and timely submission

of the graduate application.

CAREER TRACKS Recent graduates have pursued

careers as certified athletic trainers in a variety of settings, in-cluding high school and college athletics, as well as corporate rehabilitation, personaltraining, corporate fitness, andhealth promotion settings. BA Mathematics

DEPARTMENT DISTINCTIVES • Faith Integration: The Mathematics department encourages students to learn mathematics with vigor while considering how mathematics can inform an under- standing of Christ. The students examine how God's creation is revealed through applied mathematics and how His Nature is revealed through pure mathematics. • Academic Community: The department is a community of students who develop close and supportive relationships with one another. The faculty come along- side students as mentors to facilitate the reaching of their potential. Class sizes are small and individual attention is abundant. • Faculty Research: Faculty are engaged in research in functional analysis, including ill-posed problems and operator theory as well as group theory and cohomology. Work is also being done in the field of mathematical philosophy. • Academic Enrichment: The department offers a drop-in tutoring service known as The Abelian Group for students in any mathematics class. Strong upperclass- men have opportunities to serve as tutors in the program. • Instrumentation: Eastern's mathematics department owns a Wolfram Mathematica site license which can be used by all current students as well as its own GNU- Linux server for its computer science courses.

CAREER TRACKS Graduates with a mathematics degree are in great demand for their problem solving and critical thinking skills. Many of our alumni have moved on to further graduate work completing master's degrees and PhDs. Others have found careers in fields such as education, actuarial science, computer programming, library and information sciences, consulting and economics.
