Andrographolide (Kalmegh), isolated from the roots of the Andrographis paniculata shrub, has been used for centuries in Asian traditional medicine as a fever reducer, anti-inflammatory and liver protectant remedy. Andrographolide is reported to inhibit the inflammatory mediator, thus providing anti-inflammatory activity through its ability to suppress vasodilation. Andrographolide is useful in cases of skin dermatitis and in mild skin irritations such as redness, itching, and other discomforts, including delicate or dry skin, baby rashes, and reduced skin exfoliation. Its anti-microbial efficacy may have several benefits in the treatment of oily skin conditions. In addition to inhibiting nitric oxide production, Andrographolide is able to reduce endothelin levels. Boswellia Serrata produces a resin known as Frankincense, which contains a number of pentacyclic triterpenes. Boswellic acid, an extract of Boswellia serrata, has been shown to inhibit elastase, making it effective in products for the prevention of premature aging and to improve skin firmness and elasticity. Use of Sambrani extract results in significant improvements in the Dover global score for photoaging, tactile roughness, and fine lines, as well as, with non-invasive diagnostic techniques, increased elasticity, decreased sebum excretion, and a change in echographic parameters. The dry extract of Boswellia serrata has been shown to be effective against many bacterial species, and particularly against Propionibacterium acnes, demonstrating its efficacy in the treatment of acne and oily skin.

Extracts of Centella Asiatica have traditionally been used in Eastern medicine as an aid to wound healing. The triterpenes from Centella, namely Asiaticoside, Asiatic acid, and Madecassic acid, have been shown to stimulate collagen synthesis in human skin fibroblasts and to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The triterpenes have also been shown to be effective against inflammation and edema.

Escin is the name of saponins extracts from horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum). It is a potent anti- inflammatory compounds which reduces capillary fragility and helps prevent leakage of fluids into the surrounding tissues, which can cause swelling. Escin stimulates microcirculation by opposing water retention. It shows beneficial effects on venous insufficiency and associated conditions such as cellulitis.

Glabridin is the main active isoflavone in licorice extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Glabridin is a potent antioxidant that prevents oxidative DNA fragmentation and inhibits tyrosinase activity of melanocytes without showing any cytotoxicity. Various dermatological disorders such as melasma, age spots, and actinic damage are a result of an excessive level of epidermal pigmentation. When applied topically, Glabridin provides pronounced anti- inflammatory and skin lightening activity. Glabridin’s anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to the inhibition of superoxide anion production and cyclo-oxygenase activity.
