The patterns
The cross has the additional meaning of an arbor vitae: standing in the middle of the
universe, it marks the relationship between heaven and earth. In Mulgi, Kihnu and Setu
embroideries we often see a cross with the branches of the tree of life sprouting from
its bars. The slanted cross, on the other hand, stands for death and sorrow.
The motif of the rose is closely related to THE CIRCLE. The rose is mark of universal perfection and symbolizes the redemptive power of the blood of Christ.
The rose as the queen of flowers was evidently a privileged symbol for Mary, Queen of heaven and earth and means devotion, suffering and silence.
Number petals also gave pattern additional meaning. So rose with five petals means silence, with six petals unity, balance and happiness, with seven petals holiness and with eight petals renascence.
