NATIONAL NAVAL OFFICERS ASSOCIATION Winter 2014 Greetings Members, Family and Friends, It is a distinct honor to take over as President of our prestigious chapter. I will continue the high standards that Col Belyeu and his predecessors have set forth and look to impel our chapter to even greater heights. This begins with each member becoming actively engaged in the chapter and overall the mission of NNOA of diversifying the sea services through mentoring, recruiting, retention and development. As a team we shall divide the tasks and multiply our success. This second half of the NNOA year will be filled with tasks as we continue to further the progression of our inaugural events from the previous year. From our Scholarship Golf Tournament to our General Officer Speed Mentoring event and the chapter awarding over $10,000 in scholarships to high school students, the organization has the opportunity to have a monumental impact on your career and the community as well. It will require your time and effort to make these events successful and extending your hand to bring others in to such a worthwhile organization. Let us serve as the example to emulate. Greetings Members, Family and Friends,

It is a distinct honor to take over as President of our prestigious chapter. I will continue the high

Chaplain’s Corner! “Whens Your Time” ! Since I have been stationed in California, my family and I have visited several churches and we have yet to find a permanent church home. Out of the countless sanctuaries and fellowship halls we have entered, all have been friendly and warm. We have met numerous friendly faces, given many a hug by a stranger and shook many strong hands. It is always a good feeling when people are excited that they have new visitors to entertain and invite into their church. Yet we still find ourselves without a church home after over three years of searching. Maybe we have become drifters — a family unwilling to make another commitment? I certainly shutter at the idea of having one more chore or event in our busy schedules. Between normal homework, operational tempo, the dreaded project or research paper, duty, choir rehearsals, grocery shopping, oil changes, open houses, finals, haircuts, winter dances, spring dances, performances, parties, sleepovers, vet visits plus the occasional emergency which throws the normal routine into absolute chaos – there seems little time for anything else! (I am tired even thinking about it.) The idea of adding Youth Group or Small Group to that list is just overwhelming; although, it is definitely doable. There is always time for adding something which refreshes a tired spirit. So why not commit? I have noticed a trend. From the many beautiful and friendly spires, a common greeting has emerged. It goes something like this, “Good morning, we feel so blessed that you came to visit. Do you know we are looking for a new Board Chairman!!” Or the well intentioned parishioner eyes my kids and immediately says, “Girls! Oh you need to come to our youth event that starts in ten minutes, let me introduce you to our youth minister!” At this point, I feel I am at daycare again as I lose feeling in my legs as they both take a death grip. As we speed home, it is decided we probably will not return. It is a scary thought how good intentions many times have unintended results. Showing unconditional hospitality means welcoming people with no strings attached understanding what people may need at the given time. Sometimes it is simply enough to sit at the Savior’s feet. Sometimes is it fulfilling to solely listen. And sometimes it is time to stand up and say yes. Sometimes it is right to mentor and help someone step outside of their comfort zone. As leaders and mentors, we must develop the talent to understand when it is time to expand others’ boundaries or time to actively observe and support. So when is your time?

Blessings,

Chaps LT David Tambur

Holiday Social

First I would like to thank everybody who attended our annual Holiday Social, that was held at my house this year. With over 45 adults and upwards to 20 children; it was a huge success!!! Additionally 3 members joined or renewed their membership in NNOA. The potluck style dinner included everything from fried turkey wings to deviled eggs. Food is always a great way to bring family and friends together. The menu was extensive and delicious. The house was filled with festive air and smack talking from the competitiveness of dominos and spades. The kids had their own dance competition going with the Xbox. I would like to extend a special thanks to my mother and her friend Debra for decorating the house. I would also like to thank 1stLt Gantt and Capt Armstrong for their assistance in setup before the start of the social. I can’t wait until our next holiday social.

Community Service Event 2013 !On November 23, 2013 New Seasons Church and Heaven’s Windows a non-profit

organization hosted the 5th annual “Season of Love” Block Party. The event is held in Spring Valley, CA and is dedicated to feeding the needy during the holiday season.

This event was the only “free turkey” giveaway with the greater San Diego area that did not require recipients to provide personal financial information or disability status. We used 2-1-1 San Diego and www.211sandiego.org to connect people with the resources and services that this event provided.

We were able to help 845 families by distributing 31.000 lbs of groceries and produce, 600 turkeys to 4,100 recipients who were our guests. This could not have been done without the 300 volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. The best number of all was “54” which was the number of souls saved.

Contributors to this event also included – Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, Care 1 Health Plan, Mt.Miguel Covenant Village and generous donations from New Seasons Church members.

Additional Services provided were free dental screening, free HIV tests and information about health care from Covered California. Guests were also afforded the opportunity to speak with Congresswoman Susan Davis. !

The NNOA Camp Pendleton Miramar Chapter is grounded in Mentorship, Leadership, Scholarship support and Community service. Our Honor Chapter provided security traffic control, Prayer upon request, and Line care as needed for our guests. !

Personal thanks to the chapter from Rozetha Hicks LCDR (ret.), Event Coordinator , member of New Seasons church and NNOA Camp Pendleton/Miramar Chapter Secretary.

The NNOA Camp Pendleton-Miramar Chapter 2014 Scholarship Program

The Camp Pendleton-Miramar Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association, (NNOA) is committed to developing and supporting youth to aspire for higher academic education through establishment of scholarship awards. The Camp Pendleton-Miramar Chapter of the NNOA has established an Annual Scholarship Program for high school seniors. Our Chapter President, Colonel Grady Belyeu, USMC is committed to maintaining our Scholarship Program as a major part of our goal to facilitate, participate in and coordinate activities that will uplift our local communities. ! In an effort to support the youth in this community, the Camp Pendleton- Miramar Chapter will expand the scholarship program to establish communications with the High School Guidance Counselors of San Diego County, Orange County and Riverside County, California. ! This year we will post two types of Scholarship applications and instructions. The first will support applicants for the Chapter Scholarship Program for High School Seniors based on the criteria of NEED/MERIT. For this program, 50% of the applicants selected for scholarships will be military dependents of enlisted Marines or Sailors. The second application is for those High School Seniors who will be able to meet the criteria for the NNOA Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Program scholarship. We have received support from the NNOA National Level STEM Chair on adding the STEM scholarship to our program. ! The requirement is for applications to be mailed before 15 April or postmarked 15 April 2014. The 2014 Scholarship instructions letter and application forms are available on the Chapter website for download by interested High School Seniors. ! The Camp Pendleton-Miramar Chapter of the NNOA actively supports the Sea Services in the development of a diverse officer corps through recruitment, retention, and career development. The Camp Pendleton-Miramar Chapter of the NNOA is essential in maintaining operational readiness by providing professional development, mentoring and support of cultural awareness. We are always looking for new opportunities to maintain the positive image of the Sea Services in communities and educational institutions.
