National GRID Infrastructure
National Authority for Scientific ResearchSorin ZGURA,
Second Annual Meeting of the Tier 2 Federation
Vision Statement
In July 2005, according to the decision of the Ministry for Education and Research, the Task Force for the national Grid infrastructure was organized
The main goal of this Task Force is to promote a strategic plan for the pilot project entitled “Implementation of national the
Grid infrastructure”.
DONE
Specific Objectives
SO1: Gradual and balanced development of the national Grid infrastructure, based on active centers of competence and reuse of the results provided by national and international cooperation in the domain
SO2: Integration of the Romanian information society in a virtual global information
SO3: Increasing the scientific potential and the existing capacities for applied software development by integrating in a GRID global system; drawing of new resources for the research field; extending the impact of research results in economic and social fields.
SO4: Promotion of new specific Grid technologies in Romania, orientation of academic, research and business communities towards the new virtual global medium, as well as the training and specialization of human resources, and provision of transition towards the new system
SO5: Communication segment for the Romanian GRID framework
Today’s Situation
MoU for LCG (LHC Computing GRID) Collaboration has been signed by NASR
The Romanian Tier 2 Federation is organizing (see M.Dulea presentation)
ROSA applied for CA to EuGRID PMA, according to the decision of the NASR. ROSA has high level security ability to manage the classified information trough National RD Program “Security and Defense Research”
Agreement between the Government of Romania and Government of Hungary concerning Cooperation in GRID Infrastructure
RoEduNet applied SEELIGHT project to the HiPERB Program, NASR will supported the co-financing
Recommendations
For planning and coordination reasons the pilot project will be implemented as a national research programme, structured according the main layers of the Grid infrastructure: Broadband communication network, Grid architecture (resources and middleware), and Applications.
The Task Force will be in charge with the evaluation of results produced by the projects financed within the programme in order to assure their mutual compliance and their convergence with the programme objectives.
Grid infrastructure development and deployment processes will be based on reuse and exploitation of the results produced by EU co-funded research projects with Romanian participation; more specifically, the EGEE infrastructure solution will be implemented with the benefit of assuring the interoperability at regional and European level.
Financial resources
Financial support will be available based on projects. NOT institutional financing.

RoEduNet2 RoEduNet2 = DF based national infrastructure for 10 years
Access to one DF pair on the national network of “Telecomunicatii CFR” Access to high capacity circuits based on DWDM technology and to a scalable optical
network to provide necessary circuits for the national network for about 10 years
Major milestones of the project March 2006 – bilateral accord between the Ministry of Education and Research and the
Ministry of Transport has been signed – one pair of DF to be used for Romanian NREN
November 2006 - the feasibility study for the network has been finished by RoEduNet DWDM technology to be used
December 2006 – bilateral contract between RoEduNet and “Telecomunicatii CFR” has been concluded
Access to more about 4800 km of DF RoEduNet will provide necessary equipments to light up the fibre (DWDM equipments)
Q1/2007 – IP equipments installed in RoEduNet sites to support the new capacities to be provided by the photonic network
July 2008 – contract signed for optical equipments – 56 locations Installation to be done by November 2008
November 2008 – Optical network installed
December 2008 – Run internal tests for all circuits
January 2008 – reconfigure the IP network and install into production the new circuits13

Separate Common Photonic Layer – CPLROADM enabled solution:
Reconfigurable lambda pathElectronic compensation of dispersion for
ROADM sitesAutomatic lambda reconfiguration pathsMoving any lambda within the network as long
as the total length does not exceed 1500 kmLambda on demand available – could be
offered as serviceResilience for each location (except for
one NOC – tackle for a solution)

Future Plans - Infrastruture Install the local loop (metro fiber from the site of Telecomunicatii CFR
to RoEduNet POPs) for all cities where Optical circuits are installed 18 cities in Q1 – Q2/2009 15 cities in Q3 – Q4/2009
Complete the network with CDWM technology for stub POPs – to be upgraded to DWDM later (brown lines on the main topology picture)
Upgrade the metropolitan area network in Bucharest to 10 Gbps resilient on each MetroPOP
Upgrade the data centers in each NOC to reach conformity with international standards
At least 30 min on battery At least 10 hours on power generator Conformity with international standards
Install new POPs – no necessary in the county capitals – for the sites where there are high demand for network traffic
Romanian Education Network20
Future Plans - Services HelpDesk 24x24, 7/7
started – working hours available 5/7 Integrated monitoring services (NMS) and SLA monitor to
be finished and integrated with TTS
CSIRT – process started (www.csirt.ro) – to be accredited mid 2009 (in contact with TERENA CSIRT-TF)
Security threads probes to be installed and countermeasures to be taken automatically - integrated with GEANT plans
QoS – solutions from GEANT to be integrated (PERT) Lambda on demand to be made available for the connected
institutions
