About the TrustFrom Sheena Cumiskey and David Eva

As ever 2014 is shaping up to be a busy year with many changes planned across the Trust.

One big change that will affect us all is the introduction of the Nicotine Management Policy on 3rd February. The policy is being introduced because we care about people’s health and want to be as proactive as possible creating a smoke free environment for all.

Whilst recognising this won’t be a popular change with everyone we are doing everything we can to support people. Not everyone will want to stop smoking but, to prevent harm to others from second hand smoke, help is available to manage nicotine dependency symptoms whilst on Trust premises. You can find out more about the campaign on page 6 or, for more specific information on how the policy will affect you, log on to our website.

Care Quality Commission (CQC)The CQC visited CWP’s Springview Hospital on Clatterbridge Health Park, Wirral, recently. This was an unannounced routine inspection to check that essential standards of quality and safety were being met. The inspection report indicates areas of compliance and two areas of non-compliance. The two areas of non-compliance were considered to have a minor impact on people who use the service.

We welcome the findings of this inspection and have immediately acted upon them to improve the patient experience in the areas identified. Our priority is to providethe best possible care for patients and we view visits from the CQC as an opportunity to take a step back and really challenge ourselves to be the best at what we do.

The CQC has also published its report on its re-visit to CWP’s learning disability inpatient assessment and treatment service at Eastway, Chester. Full compliance has been achieved with all the standards inspected.

What we do as an NHS Foundation Trust CWP deliver a wide range of services across Cheshire and Wirral. We are also commissioned to provide services in other areas including Trafford and Bolton. The Trust has more than 3,400 staff working over 65 sites serving a population of over one million people.

www.cwp.nhs.ukBig Book of Best Practice CWP has published its first ‘Big Book of Best Practice’. The guide is packed full of examples of good clinical practice and aims to facilitate the sharing of innovative ideas. The book is based on the annual CWP good practice showcase which was held late last year and was visited by NHS England’s leading director for mental health, Dr Geraldine Strathdee.

Dr Strathdee commented: “CWP has an obvious passion for quality, recovery focused patient care. In light of recent reports such as the Keogh Review, where the focus is on driving excellence in care; having a culture that nurtures innovation is very special. I have a firm commitment to taking best practice

evidence and making it routine clinical practice where patients feel empowered to reach their potential, and staff can maximise their time to care. It is truly exciting to see such good work being done here at CWP.”

NHS North West Leadership Awards CWP were awarded not one, but two honors at the recent NHS North West Leadership Recognition Awards, held at the Monastry in Manchester. Jane Newcombe, clinical service manager from CWP drug and alcohol services picked up the NHS Partnership/System Leader of the Year Award for her work within substance misuse services across Wirral.

Anushta Sivananthan, CWP consultant psychiatrist and medical director was also recognised in the NHS Quality Champion/Innovator of the Year category for her extensive work within dementia care services and in particular her work with the Countess of Chester Hospital in reducing average

lengths of stay for dementia patients. All winners from the regional recognition awards will be entered into the national leadership awards in February. Good luck both.

National Dementia Care Awards Meadowbank Ward at Springview Hospital, Wirral is celebrating after occupational therapists, Rachael O’Sullivan and Susie Walsh, scooped the Ken Holt Memorial Award at the national Dementia Care Awards held in Nottingham. The award was presented to the team by BBC newscaster Bill Turnbull.

Dr Andrew Ellis, CWP consultant psychiatrist for the Wirral older people’s mental health team, said: “This is the first time that this award has been given. Ken Holt was the husband of a lady with dementia and he prepared the first life story book for his wife. Ken sadly passed on and this award is in his memory.

“Both Rachael and Susie have championed this work on the ward, ensuring that all patients are given the opportunity to have a life story book completed during their stay which then accompanies them home. The book provides a focus for reminiscence work whilst on the ward, and encourages meaningful communication with those who have dementia.”

Final notes for hospital organist A much loved organist has retired after 53 years of service with the NHS. Cliff Jones, from Chester, was given a special send off to celebrate his long service at CWP’s, Bowmere Hospital in Chester. Amongst his talents Cliff also wrote concerts, plays and pantomimes which were performed and enjoyed by patients and staff over the years.

Cliff, who is now 84, said: “I love my job and have loved working for CWP. My fondest memory is when I think of all the patients who used to sing the last hymn of my service, as they made their way back to their ward. Through music, I feel I have a made a difference to the care of patients and I hope I made their stay more enjoyable.”

Spotlight on… self-careWhat is self-care? Self-care means looking after yourself in a healthy way, whether its brushing your teeth, doing some exercise or taking medicine when you have a cold if you need it.

If you have a long-term condition, there are extra things you may need to consider, such as making changes to your diet, different types of exercise or different types of medication you may need to take.

Self-care also means staying active by doing things that are important to you, such as gardening, seeing friends and family, going on holiday, or continuing to work if possible. It involves looking at what you can do and want to do, rather than what you can’t do.

There’s lots of information on the NHS Choices website about how everyone can use self-care to improve their health and well-being but here are a few things that CWP can help with…

Lose weightPeople who are overweight have a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and numerous other long term conditions. Achieving a healthy weight can also help you manage

long term conditions such as diabetes. CWP provides a free weight loss programme in western Cheshire called ‘Why Weight?’ Log on to www.cwp-whyweight.com to find out more.

Cut down on alcohol CWP Wirral’s harm reduction team had a busy start to the year promoting Alcohol Concern’s ‘Dry January’. Helen Parkinson, (pictured above) clinical nurse specialist, said: “Even social drinkers regularly consume more than the recommended daily amount of alcohol, which can increase your risk of vascular diseases, such as heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. Make sure you know what the recommended limits are and stick to them.” More information can be found on www.alcoholconcern.org.uk.

Manage long-term conditions When you’re first diagnosed with a long-term condition, learning to live with your condition will be important. Whether your condition improves or gets worse, or other things in your life change, you may need to change your care plan to suit your needs.

Finding out about local support groups in your area can be really helpful, like Dave Davies (pictured below) did at CWP’s Healthy Living Centre, in Ellesmere Port. Dave said: “I have rheumatoid arthritis and it is such a relief to find a group of understanding people who you can have a good moan with and share good coping tips.”

Living with…Pam’s story...

Care • Well-being • PartnershipCare • Well-being • Partnership

After struggling with a drug addiction, Pam found herself homeless and isolated from her family and friends until she met her partner, Ryan.

Ryan offered Pam a place to stay and companionship at a vulnerable stage in her life. Six years later after a continuing struggle with drug use, both Pam and Ryan sought help from CWP Wirral harm reduction team.

After several visits Pam developed a trusting relationship with Marie, her substance misuse practitioner and confided that she was being mentally and physically abused by Ryan at their home to the extent that her front teeth had been knocked loose in a recent incident. Pam also confided that Ryan was frequently taking her benefit payments from her.

After discussing her issues confidentially with Marie, Pam agreed to be referred to the Family Safety Unit provided by the local authority. Once meeting with them at Wirral drug service, immediate help and support was put in place in partnership with the Police. Pam’s address was tagged, the locks were replaced and a security firm were appointed to put additional safety measures in place.

When Ryan returned to the address later that day Pam, with encouragement from Marie, contacted the Police. This also happened on another occasion and Pam summoned the courage to contact the Police again. On both occasions Ryan was removed from the premises.

Since this turning point, Pam has had no contact with Ryan and with CWP support is now illegal substance free and undertaking a methadone reduction plan, with a view to being totally drug free in the near future.

She is now in daily contact with her parents and has managed to rebuild her relationship with them; her Dad has helped to completely redecorate her flat. With continued support and gains in confidence, Pam has also attended dentist appointments and has had a new set of teeth fitted.

“ My support worker has been

brilliant and has been with me every step of the way. I’m still finding my way through recovery but when I look back at how far I have come, I’m determined to get there. I feel positive about my future and am hopeful of securing voluntary work at my local stables.”

The names and photographs in the story have been changed to protect the individual’s identities.

A safe, smokefree environment for allPublic health bodies in Wirral, East Cheshire and West Cheshire, in partnership with local NHS Trusts and Heart of Mersey, have launched a new public health campaign to end smoking on hospital premises.

From 3rd February 2014 people who use NHS services, visitors and NHS employees will not be able to smoke in the following NHS trust premises and grounds:

• The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

• Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

• Wirral University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

• East Cheshire NHS Trust.

Fiona Johnstone director for public health in Wirral, said: “Allowing smoking within hospital grounds and not supporting people who use NHS services to manage their nicotine dependency gives confusing messages. No level

of smoking or second hand smoke is safe. The NHS has encouraged people not to smoke on their premises for some time, but the message now is clear: ‘you can’t smoke in these hospital sites’.

“We will support people with their nicotine dependency and encourage people to access specialist support services. Hopefully many people will go on to give up smoking for good and fully realise the health and social benefits of this.”

Patient care at the heart of joined up workingCWP, together with Cheshire West and Chester Council and NHS West Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group, have launched an integrated community care team pilot, based in Princeway Health Centre, Frodsham.

Helen Cunningham, Princeway community care team manager, said: “Integrated care is all about providing the right care, in the right place at the right time. Having GP’s, nurses, social workers and other care professionals under one roof and sharing resources, makes working together a lot easier and facilitates good quality care for our patients.”
