The Fighting Hawks can secure at least a share of their third-ever Penrose Cup: on Friday night with a win over No. 16/14 Western Michigan and a loss by UMD at Colorado College. on Saturday with a sweep of WMU regardless of UMD’s results. North Dakota can also lock up the Penrose Cup outright: on Saturday night only, by gaining at least one more point than Minnesota Duluth on the weekend to finish seven points ahead with only two conference games remaining (six points). The Fighting Hawks would join St. Cloud State as three-time Penrose Cup champions (2014-15, 2015-16) should they close the deal. HOME FOR THE PLAYOFFS: North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth have already secured home ice for the playoffs. UND can finish no worse than the No. 3 seed, while the Bulldogs can finish anywhere from the No. 1 seed to the No. 4 seed. Western Michigan and Denver both have opportunities to lock up home ice this weekend. WMU can do so by: • sweeping at North Dakota and having St. Cloud State sweep Denver. • gaining at least two more points than SCSU this weekend. Denver can clinch home ice by: • earning four points this weekend at St. Cloud State either via a win and tie OR two ties and two 3-on-3 overtime/shootout wins. The Pioneers would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with SCSU. THE HUSKIES ARE STREAKING: St. Cloud State enters its series against No. 6/6 Denver on a season-long six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2), which ties for the third-longest active unbeaten streak in the country behind only Cornell and Bemidji State, who SCSU tied twice to open the season. The Huskies need at least three points against Denver OR have Western Michigan earn one or zero points this weekend at North Dakota to remain alive for possible home ice in the playoffs. POLL POSITIONS: The NCHC is still home to the No. 1 team in the country in one poll, as North Dakota remained in the top spot in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll for the fourth straight week, but fell to No. 3 in the USCHO.com Poll. Western Michigan returned to the USA Hockey Magazine this week for the first time since Oct. 14, giving the NCHC four ranked teams in that poll, tying with Hockey East for the most ranked teams. The NCHC has three teams in the top six of both polls. • Colorado College earned a split at Omaha last weekend, falling 5-0 in the opener, before bouncing back for a 3-2 road win Saturday. Friday’s loss marked the fourth time the Tigers have been shut out this season. It was also their first loss this season when allowing less than 30 shots on goal. Saturday, however, CC earned its first NCHC win in 10 tries (since a Jan. 11 win over Miami) and first road NCHC win since sweep-ing St. Cloud State Nov. 15-16.

• Senior forward Chris Wilkie leads the country with 153 shots on goal after 10 at Omaha, and 5.10 shots on goal per game. He is tied for third in the country with 20 goals this season, tops in the NCHC by four, while his 0.67 goals per game are tied for fifth in the NCAA.

• In Saturday’s win over Omaha, junior defenseman Zach Berzolla broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period for the game-winning goal, his first career game-winner. It was his second goal of the season and only the third of his career. This marks his first season with multiple goals.

• In the Tigers’ 11 victories this season, they have allowed just 21 goals, but have given up 85 goals in the other 19 games.

• Miami was swept at Denver last weekend, dropping 7-3 and 7-0 de-cisions. Saturday marked only the second time this season MU was held scoreless in a game. The RedHawks lost all four games to the Pioneers this year a combined 22-7. Miami is now stuck in an 11-game winless skid (0-9-2). MU has been outscored 16-3 in the third period during its 11-game winless streak, but was within a goal or better seven times.

• In Friday’s loss to Denver, Miami scored only 1:32 into the game by junior forward Casey Gilling. It was the RedHawks fifth goal this season within the first two minutes of the game, which ties for third nationally behind New Hampshire (8) and NCHC rival Western Michigan (6).

• Since going 3-for-5 on the power play against North Dakota on Jan. 18, Miami is just 2-for-20 on the man advantage over the past eight games, going 0-7-1 in that stretch. The RedHawks were 0-for-7 on the power play at Denver last weekend.

• Miami defensemen are tied for eighth in the country with 19 goals this season, including nine by sophomore Derek Daschke. His nine goals tie for fifth among NCAA blue liners and lead all NCHC defensemen.

• Despite not holding it this week for the first time in four weeks (since Jan. 27), three NCHC teams (Denver, Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota) have held the top spot in 13 of 21 USCHO.com Polls so far this season. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll in 73 of 93 polls. • Over the last six seasons, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll 90 weeks, 75 more weeks than any other conference combined (Big Ten second at 15 weeks). Cornell at No. 1 this week gives ECAC Hockey 12 weeks at the top spot during that span. Four different NCHC teams (DU, UMD, UND and St. Cloud State) have all held the No. 1 ranking for at least 19 weeks during in the last six seasons, all more than any other conference combined.

NUMBER ONE IN NON-CONFERENCE... AGAIN: With only two weekends left in the regular season, the NCHC is finished with non-conference play for the regular season. NCHC teams finished with a combined non-conference record of 49-26-12, with the .632 win percentage once again tops among the six Division I men’s hockey conferences. The NCHC has now posted the best combined non-conference regular-season win percentage in five of the last six seasons, including last year at .659 (52-25-8), and now this season. (page 7)

CENTURY CLUB ACCESS: Four active NCHC players have now topped 100 points for their career, with Minnesota Duluth junior defenseman Scott Perunovich the latest to join the Century Club after two points (1g, 1a) at Western Michigan last Friday, giving him 19 goals and 81 assists in 111 career games. Perunovich is one of only four active juniors in NCAA hockey with 100 career points and the only junior blue liner. Active NCHC career scoring leaders: 1. Hugh McGing, Sr., F, WMU - 112 points (42g, 70a) 2. Gordie Green, Sr., F, Miami - 109 points (44g, 65a) 3. Jack Ahcan, Sr., D, SCSU - 101 points (21g, 80a) 4. Perunovich, Jr., D, UMD - 100 points (19g, 81a)Green was the first active NCHC player to join the Century Club on Dec. 30, but has since been edged by McGing for the lead. Ahcan was the first active NCHC defenseman to reach 100 career points on Feb. 8. Next on their way to joining the century club are senior forwards Liam Finlay of Denver (33g, 61a) and Nick Halloran of Colorado College (38g, 56a), who each have 94 career points.

GAME-WINNERS GALORE: The top two game-winning-goal scorers in the country reside in the NCHC in North Dakota junior forward Collin Adams and Denver sophomore forward Cole Guttman, as each have six game-winners this year. Adams’ UND classmate Jordan Kawaguchi is among three NCAA players tied for second in game-winning goals with five each. Guttman has 13 goals total on the season, while Adams has 11 goals overall. Four of Kawaguchi’s five game-winners came in November while he has 15 goals this season. Omaha freshman forward Joey Abate and DU sophomore forward Emilio Pettersen are tied for sixth nationally with four game-winners each this season. (page 30)

His 30 assists are tied for third in the NCAA, with his 1.00 assists per game tying for second in the country. Last season, Kawaguchi also led UND in scoring, but finished the season with 26 points total in 37 games (0.70 ppg, less than half of this season). (page 29)

WILKIE THIS WAY: Colorado College senior forward Chris Wilkie is tied for third in the NCAA with 20 goals this season. McGing is the lone representative from the NCHC up for the national award, which honors seniors who excel both on and off the ice, and in the community. The winner is announced on April 10 at the Frozen Four in Detroit, Mich. No NCHC player has won the award since the NCHC started in 2013-14.

HOBEY HOPEFULS: Fan voting for the 2020 Hobey Baker Award opened in mid-January and 14 NCHC players were nominated by their schools, with all eight teams having at least one representative. Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.

14 @TheNCHC | #NCHCHockey Feb. 24-Mar. 1, 2020

Order of Tiebreakers for NCHC Tournament SeedingSeeding of teams for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the final NCHC standings at the end of the regular season. If two or more teams are tied for the regular-season championship, they shall be considered co-champions.

The Penrose Memorial Cup shall be awarded and positions for the NCHC Tournament determined, according to the following pro-cedure. Shootout results (other than the accumulation of points as a result of shootouts) will not be used to help break ties in the standings for the NCHC Championship Trophy and playoff seeding.

1. If two or more teams are tied in the standings and all teams have played a balanced scheduled against one another (equal num-ber of home and away games between all teams tied), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the team with the best NCHC regular-season winning percentage among the games played against the other teams tied in the standings. If any of the teams tied have played an unbalanced schedule against any other team tied this criterion will not be used and the following criteria will apply;

2. If not determined by (1), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the greater number of NCHC regular-sea-son wins;

3. If not determined by (1) or (2), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be the team with the best NCHC regular-season win-ning percentage among the games played against the other teams tied in the standings, regardless of the schedule being balanced among the teams tied;

4. If not determined by (1) or (2) or (3), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by comparison of total goals for and against each team in contests between (among) the other teams tied in the standings in NCHC regular-season play;

5. If not determined by (1) or (2) or (3) or (4), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by comparison of the winning percentages of the teams tied in the standings against the remaining highest ranked NCHC teams, successively, until the determination is accomplished or all NCHC regular-season contests have been considered;

6. If not determined by (1) or (2) or (2) or (4) or (5), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the flip of a coin.

In the case of ties among three or more schools, the criteria will be used in order until the top team is separated from the pack. At that point, the process will begin anew to break the “new” tie with all remaining teams. In other words, when a four-way tie be-comes a three-way tie, the three-way tie is treated as a “new” tie and the process begins with the first criterion.

Home-ice advantage was in full effect Friday night in the NCHC as home teams went 3-0-1 and took 11 of 12 possi-

ble points. In a top-20 showdown at Lawson Ice Arena, No. 19 Western Michigan scored three goals in the third period to rally past No. 4/4 Minnesota Duluth for a 5-2 win, closing within three points of second-place UMD in the NCHC standings. Top-ranked and first-place North Dakota only took partial advantage of UMD’s loss, gaining one point in a 3-3 tie at St. Cloud State to push their lead to nine points with five games remaining in the pursuit of the Penrose Cup. The Huskies won in the first round of a shootout to take two points on the night.

No. 7/7 Denver snapped a four-game losing streak by scoring a season-high seven goals in a 7-3 win over Miami, behind sophomore forward Tyler Ward’s first career hat trick, all in the first period. The Pioneers moved four points clear of St. Cloud State for the final home-ice playoff spot. At Baxter Arena, Omaha erupted for four goals in the third period and freshman Isaiah Saville recorded his first career shutout to blank Colorado College, 5-0, for UNO’s third win over the Tigers this season. The Mavericks sit in sixth place, still seven points back of Denver for home ice.

After home teams went unbeaten on Friday, road teams found slightly more success on Saturday, earning two series

splits. However, the top-ranked team in the country fell on the road and Denver was the lone team to complete a weekend sweep, doing so at home. The Pioneers finished their broom-job with a 7-0 blanking of Miami behind junior Devin Cooley’s second shutout of the season. The win kept DU four points up in fourth place for the final home-ice playoff spot. Fifth-place St. Cloud State kept the pressure on DU after upsetting top-ranked and first-place North Dakota, 2-1, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, behind a third-period goal from senior forward Jack Poehling.

The two road teams that were victorious Saturday were No. 4/4 Minnesota Duluth and Colorado College, each avenging a loss on Friday. The Bulldogs took advantage of an own goal batted in by Western Michigan in the third period to edge the 19th-ranked Broncos, 2-1, in Kalamazoo, while at Baxter Arena, the Tigers struck twice in the final half of the second period to rally past Omaha for a 3-2 victory. UMD’s victory snapped WMU’s seven-game home win streak, while securing home ice for the NCHC Quarterfinals as the Bulldogs win enough tiebreakers that they can finish no worse than the No. 4 seed.
