If you have not seen the January 2020 Newsletter, go to nalbucs.com, select January 2020 and read “CALLING ALL BUCS” by Hart and June Kelley. You will find a very positive and inspirational mes-sage about our Conventions.

“Muleskinner Mike,” alias “The Chicken Man,” will perform for us on Saturday eve-ning at 2045 hours as a part of our enter-tainment for the weekend. You won’t want to miss this show!

Don’t be disappointed later, come and enjoy the “FINAL BUCCANEER BASH IN BOCA.”

P.S. Good news from Steve Mills, no obituaries to pass on this month.

Airplane and Airport Mystery Guessers

The February airplane, the Martin AM-1 Mauler, seemed to give you folks a run for the computer. Only Jim Gannon, Bob and Linda Spencer, Vince Wynne, John Wentworth, Jerome Kline, Alan Gee, Gary Snodgrass, and Curt Briggs took the time and effort.

I would have thought the airport would have been the easiest ever, since the gumbo from the employees’ cafeteria and the downtown layovers in New Orleans were both crew fa-vorites. Even so, Dusty Rhodes, Bob Massey, John Wentworth, Jim Gettys, Vince Wynne, Jim Gannon, Bob and Linda Spencer, Jerome Kline, Alan Gee, and Gary Snodgrass were the only folks who figured it out.

Curt Briggs was late for check in for January, but correctly identified the Breguet 765 Sahara. So, being the PC group that we are, he gets a “participation” trophy.

Central Florida Buccaneers Luncheon by John and Linda Wentworth

On February 12th the CFBs once again convened to celebrate lunchtime and hearty conversation with old friends and workmates. The fourteen participants were: Bill West, Stan Barfield, Frank Savino, Dan Pierce, Kay Strauss, Bob and Faye Murrell, Bill Strelecki, Dave Blessing, John Bowling, Mike Neener, and Linda and John Wentworth. The March luncheon reenactment is scheduled for the 11th of the month so please mark your calendars accordingly.

Faye Murrell and Bill West are in a consid-erably stronger financial situation after having won the wildly anticipated 50/50 riches!

It’s ALWAYS fun to see everybody and we thank you for coming and sharing old stories and new.

Until next month, be well!

March’s Mystery Airport and Airplane

We are headed out of the U.S. for the month or March. When you identify the airplane, see if you can find its nickname too. One more hint on the airport—it should be an easy one if you think back to the Febru-ary airport and why it came in second place in one air-port category.

Going forward with the Mystery Section we need to have all the “guesses” sub-mitted by the 25th of each month. If we

receive a guess after the 25th, I’ll give a shout out the following month.

Email me with your answers!

Aviation Lingo by Hart Kelley

For some of this, you are going to have to dig deep into your grey matter, or what’s left of it.

True Virgins Make Dull Companions, so add Whiskey. Ok, now that I have your atten-tion, we can proceed with today’s lingo lesson review. Almost every pilot was taught this opening mnemonic to remember how to go from a compass heading to a true course. Take the heading + or – the variation for the magnetic heading, + or – the deviation for the true course. The add whiskey was to remember to add westerly and subtract easterly corrections.

To keep the Navy guys from leaving us here, I’ll remind them of one of their favorite old sayings in hopes of keeping them awake to the end. Landing on the ship during the day-time is like sex, it’s either good or it’s great. I guess after long months at sea everything relates to sex? But, ask a squid.

Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow. OK, get your head back to aviation. This is the basic theo-ry of the jet engine.Suck: The engine inhales air as the fan blades spin on the front.Squeeze: The air is funneled into a pressurized stream. Bang: The concentrated air is mixed with fuel and ignited.Blow: The air blown out the back produces thrust.

If you have to Tie it Up or Tie it Down, better to rent. There are many, many iterations on this old adage, but in order to keep this a family publication you can Google and go from there.

One of the first concepts taught after thrust, lift, weight, and drag was one to never forget, no matter if flying a Piper Cub or the XR-71. Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. If you don’t keep these three things in order of priority, bad things can happen.

In our younger days of flying small civilian planes, the reliable East is least, West is best, was a good way to remember the even and odd cruising altitudes. East bound, ya flew the odd altitudes, and west, were the even ones. And if VFR, you added 500 feet. As you progressed along your first long cross country route and passed through a fron-tal zone, you had to remember that if flying High to Low, look Out Below. If you forget to update your altimeter settings, especially if going from a High to Low pressure area, you might be closer to Terra Firma than you thought. Then approaching to land after your first leg, always remember ole Bubby “GUMP.” Gas, on both tanks, Undercarriage, down if a retractable landing gear, Mixture, full rich, and Prop, full in, if a fixed pitch propeller.

Now your next leg is IFR non radar. Remember how old you are? This was a long long time ago. As you approach your first solid triangle waypoint, (is this starting to come back?) you have to TTTT and IDPTA+. Dig deep before you read on.Time: check and note the time Turn: to your new heading for the next waypointTune: make certain you have the correct nav aid tunedTalk: to the controller

Page 5

Is it all coming back? Now the hard part. You gotta pick up the mike and give the controller IDPTA+

Your aircraft ID entificationYour P ositionYour T ime over the waypointYour A ltitudeAnd the + is for your next waypoint and eta, and the following waypoint.

Sure is a lot easier now days on International flights with CPDLC. Except trying to remember what those letters stand for.Controller Pilot Data Link Communications. You check in and give the controller your aircraft code and then all your positions re-ports are completed automatically. You request or receive altitude and speed changes on ACARS. So go in the back and watch the movie.

Last, but most certainly not least, is the ultimate aviation memory aid, one that we unfortunately should have learned years earlier. That’s CRM. Called Crew or Cockpit Resource Management. Those cockpit resources are the pilots sitting in the seats next to you. Many accidents that previously happened, thankfully don’t happen anymore due to this remarkable concept and memory aid. It really works, in all facets of life. Keep it in mind.

The Buccaneers Need a Little Help by Stan Barfield

Over many years the NAL Buccaneers club has held our dues down to an absolute minimum. For the last couple of reunions, fees were set to barely cover costs and on occasion, there have been additional unexpected costs we paid from the treasury. Keeping dues down and reunion costs low was a conscious effort to prevent residual funds when the Club closes. This being said, with the final reunion only a few months away, and our desire to put on a memorable bash, we are low on cash and need a little help. We don’t want to raise fees for the reunion which could adversely affect turnout, so we are asking any of you who are able, to send in a donation. We are not going to set any specif-ic amount. Any amount will be appreciated from $5 to whatever you feel comfortable sending. Thanks in advance. Please make donations to the NAL Buccaneers and mail to my address below.
