Owners of classic cars have typically put in thousands of dollars of parts and labor towards care on their car. And, occasionally, they love to take their car out of the garage and on the road for a spin. But few have thought about what happens if their car should break down while they are on the road.

Many classic car owners only drive their cars infrequently or on special occasions. Over the winter, they may keep their car

in the garage and only bring it out once the weather turns milder. Who knows what, if anything, has gone wrong to affect its mechanics or handling ability during the months that it has been in storage? As a consequence, when you do bring it out, you have less confidence in its road abilities than you do in a car that you drive everyday.

Secondly, in most cases, your classic car is a bit more valuable than your everyday car. As a result, if your car does break down on the roadside, you might need a special type of assistance and auto shop to get you back on the road again. Specialized classic car coverage might provide that whereas normal breakdown coverage would not.

Other car owners have avoided purchasing this type of insurance because they were not aware of the advantages that such coverage would offer. Automobile hobbyists are a special breed. And, while it is true that most owners of these cars could probably fix the car themselves if given the proper tools, parts, and equipment - when on the road, these things will probably not be available to them.

Michael Jackson’s Gone, But Fans Still Can’t Get Enough

In April 2013 Michael Jackson HIStorythe musical biography of Michael Jackson

will tour theatres across Canada.

A musical biography of Michael Jackson’s life will be staged across Canada and at the Port Theatre Thursday April 25th After a hugely successful 2011 world tour to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South Asia, the musical biography Michael Jackson HIStory will tour Canada for the first time.

Critics around the world have praised the production as a thrilling example of live entertainment and since the show’s launch in 2011 Michael Jackson fans worldwide have called for the show to tour internationally.

Michael Jackson HIStory brings to the stage a level of production that will exceed all expectations and it’s an opportunity for Jackson fans to witness a concert they may never have experienced in their lifetime, or to relive memories they were lucky enough to make.

Today, Wizz is known to be the best Michael Jackson Impersonator in the entire world.

Wizz was just twenty when Michael Jackson’s career exploded with the release of the pivotal album ‘Thriller’. During that time, Wizz’s strong resemblance to Jackson heralded the start of a long career as a conduit for Jackson music. His regular performances in Atlantic City gratified audiences and allowed him to perfect his act. After tours in Europe and Asia, Wizz settled in Las Vegas where his show was signed for eleven years at the Riviera Hotel and Casino.

“Music has been my outlet, my gift to all the lovers in this world. Through it, my music, I know I will live forever.” - Michael Jackson

JOKE. A man and a woman who have never met before find themselves in the same sleeping carriage of a train

After the initial embarrassment, they both manage to get to sleep; the woman on the top bunk, the man on the lower

In the middle of the night the woman leans over and says, “I’m sorry to bother you but I’m awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly pass me another blanket ”

The man leans out and, with a glint in his eye, says, “I’ve got a better idea let’s pretend we’re married ”

“Why not?” giggles the woman

“Good,” he replies “Get your own blanket ”

WO The Western Canada cup is being played in Nanaimo this year at the Frank Crane Arena. How excited are you that Nanaimo gets to play host and what kind of crowds to you expect?JK Its a very big privilege for us and we are very excited about it. We are expecting crowds from the 4 western provinces and from all over BC. This is as big as it gets for hockey in Nanaimo!WO Whats is the start date and how long does it run?JK We are kicking off the event with opening ceremonies on April 26. Juno nominee Chad Brownlee and guests BraedanMarshal and Jayden Holman will be performing live at the Beban Social Center – The hockey tourna-ment runs until Sunday May 5th.WO How many teams are playing and how many visitors to Nanaimo do you expect?JK There are 5 teams. The Provincial Cham-pions from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC and of course the host team Nanaimo Clippers! The Junior A western Canadian Championship teams draw visitors from those leagues. With Nanaimos support we can ac-

commodate over 19000 fans over the course of the tournament.WO Is this a family oriented event? Are there any community based events planned around the cup? JK Absolutely Yes! We are offering children passes for the full tournament at just $99!! This is one of those events that people don’t see come around that often and it’s right in our backyard!WO This is probably unfair but who is fa-voured to win the cup?JK Next question (laughs) I mean it’s really impossible to predict but one thing is every team wants it so it’s going to be outstanding and very competitive hockey! For our fans and even those who haven’t been out to a game in awhile it’s going to be a lot of fun!WO Is there anything you need from the com-munity?JK What we really need is for fans to come out and cheer on the teams. Let’s show Western Canada that Nanaimo knows how to throw a party. As a community we really want our civic pride to come through and show that we are more than capable to host such a high caliber event.

WO Thank you Jen – Did you have anything you wanted to add?JK The purpose of tournament is to determine the 2 best teams to represent Western Canada at the RBC cup therefore the stakes are very high and the competi-tion will be incredible. Clippers have a chance to earn their way to national championship and we believe that with the support of the community we can make this happen.

There is always something that needs doing around the house, condo, or boat. There just is. It might be as simple as changing a light bulb that’s burned out or slapping a coat of paint on something. What if you could just send a text to your local hardware store and ask them if they carry those little bulbs that always burn out over the stove. Or can they shake up a quart of paint because you are on your way down. Or better yet, if they carry those bulbs can they check to make sure they’re in stock before you go to the hassle of driving down there. Might save a lot of run-ning around right? Recently I had lunch with the manager of Windsor Plywood in Nanaimo Mr. Bill Craig.

Over an excellent bowl of Pho on Bowen Bill and I were talking about the convenience and immediacy of using smart phone technol-ogy for sending text messages. Unlike email, which can require checking your account, a text message arrives immediately to the re-cipients phone with a distinctive tone and can

be more simple and informal than email. In a text you might say “Can you meet me?” or “I’ll be there in 5 minutes” and it’s not con-sidered rude or curt. In the course of conver-sation Bill tells me that he has set up a phone line to receive text messages at Windsor Ply-wood located on Boban Rd in Nanaimo (see text number in advertisement in this publi-cation). The concept is simple: if you have any questions on price or availability of any product just send a text to Windsor Plywood in Nanaimo.

I asked Bill what motivated him to set up a text line and what his expectations were for people using it. He told me that he was really working to educate people that Windsor is a full-line hardware store with everything you’d expect to find from glue and tape to painting supplies, tools and carpentry products for ho-meowners and professionals and he wants to make it easy for people to get in touch. So the next time you need something send a text to Windsor - I’m pretty sure they’ll have it!

take the kids to the symphony just for funWhen you think of what kids like to do

for fun what comes to mind? Swimming perhaps? A trip to the waterfront for an ice cream or smoothie? Sure, but you might want to add the Vancouver Island Symphony to the list. Recently, as publisher of What On Digest Nanaimo, I had the opportunity to give away 8 tickets to the Music of Elton John performed by the Vancouver Island Symphony at the Port Theatre. 4 of the tickets ended up in the hands of Nanaimo resident Shawn Hildebrandt.

Shawn and his wife took their girls to the Elton John tribute and aftterwards he called me on the phone to tell me how

utterly happy his little girls were to see the show! Shawn’s girls loved it so much that they wrote me a thank you card which I’ve included below and that I now have sitting on my desk next to me as I write this. So next time you are thumbing through a copy of Whats On Digest keep an eye out for the Symphony events and grab some tickets for you and the kids!

Mountain biking continues to grow in popularity and Nanaimo offers some of the best trails anywhere. Whats On Digest Nanaimo interviewed the president of the Nanaimo

Mountain Bike Club (NMBC), Bill McMillan.

WO How is the process going to develop formal land-use agreements between the NMBC and landowners/stakeholders (on whose land the club rides)?

NMBC: Progress doesn't happen overnight but it's a lot easier with public involvement. We are developing relationships with the key stakeholders. The development of a trail around Westwood lake is a step in the right direction. It a process of ongoing meetings with the forest companies and the RDN.

WO Has the NMBC made administrative changes in order to address the broadened mandate of the Club? (no longer just organizing rides, but organizing the development and protection of the sport itself, in this area)

NMBC: Yes! We have encouraged members to get involved in tourism development, business development, and promoting the sport of mountain biking locally. One example of this is the “fat tire” festival in the central island which includes guided tours to showcase the central island (vifattire.com).

WO Do you believe formal land use agreements are integral to protecting access to the great trails that already exist around Nanaimo, and to capitalizing on the area’s potential to become a mountain bike mecca like Whistler?

NMBC: It's imperative! You can't develop it as they did in Whistler without formal agreements. The history in Nanaimo of land use goes way back to Dunsmuir and the local mining company land-use-grants. Over time the land was allocated to E & N through negotiated agreements. Presently the forest companies control large portions of land and it's use. If Nanaimo is to become world-renowned for the sport of mountain biking we need to ensure the right people are at the table and the agreements can endure over time.

WO In your opinion, what are the greatest strengths of the area for mountain biking enthusiasts, and what are the greatest challenges needing to be addressed to see its potential fulfilled?

NMBC: The greatest strength is accessibility. Anywhere in Nanaimo you are 10 minutes away from world-class trails. Some of our trails have been featured in international cycling magazines. You don't get that in Victoria or Vancouver. The greatest challenges are simply ensuring that the trails are recognized and can therefore be maintained and expanded.

WO What has been the response so far to the mountain bike park created last year in the Doumont area near the Wastelands motocross track? To the dedicated mountain bike trail around Westwood Lake?

NMBC: Officially this is not opened – but I can tell you I rode the Doumont trail this morning and it's fantastic!

WO Are there other trails/use agreements in the works?

NMBC: Yes, we have meetings coming up with local forest companies. Once agreements are in place then we will be in a position to be more specific as to land use agreements.

WO In view of potential restrictions in place regarding use of privately-owned lands, what does that mean to the average mountain biker who doesn't belong to a group like NMBC?

NMBC: It's hard to say, I mean people will do what they choose to some extent. At the end of the day the land is the property of the companies holding the deed. We can only hope that the powers that be can recognize the enormous opportunity here to drive tourism and put Nanaimo on the map.

WO Has the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club partnered in any way with the new Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation (created to drive tourism)?

NMBC: Not an official partnership but we do have some representation over there for sure.

WO What do you attribute the growing popularity of mountain biking?

NMBC: Cycling in general is very attractive to an aging population. If you have hip or knee issues cycling is far better than most other outdoor sporting activities. Once people get off the road & realize they can just ride out there in the trees they are hooked! Cycling has physical benefits but also mental health benefits. It just feels so good; you have a feeling of freedom out there amongst the trees and nature.

Whats On Digest Nanaimo interviewed local Nanaimo artist Janice Hofman regarding the Hammond Bay Studio Tour coming up at the end of April.

WO Janice what is the general idea behind the Hammond Bay Studio Tour and what are the dates?

JH Well let's start with the dates! It's Saturday April 27 & 28 10-5 at various locations around Hammond Bay in Nanaimo. The studio location map is on the Website: hammondbaystudiotour.jimdo.com/ The studio locations marked by sandwich boards and red balloons so once you know where you're headed just look for the balloons! We will also have 3 artists at Serious Coffee on Ham-mond Bay road by Pipers Pub – I (Janice Hofman) will be there featuring my Jewelry and drawings and paintings, also a local metal artist Dave Kasprick and a Glass artist Brenda MacIntyre of Cheeky Monkey Glassworks will also be there. The rest of the locations are the artist's working studios as the Idea behind the studio tour is simply to promote and showcase artists in Hammond Bay and their workspaces.

WO How long has the tour been around?

JH This is the 2nd the first was last September. The plan is to run it in the spring and fall in the last weekend in April and September.

WO Do you have a favorite aspect of the tour?

JH I like that it brings people out to see whats going on in the community and brings out the creative aspect of our community. We have so many talented art-ists and there are so many people that want to see what the local art community has to offer. It attracts people from all over the mid-island and potentially beyond. I'd love it to broaden it's scope in the future to include schools, young artists, and musicians.

WO Why do you think art is important?

JH Oh my god (laughs). I think it's important for all of us whether you are a lover of art or a creator of it. Art shows history. It's important for all of us sometimes to slow down and appreciate the things we have. We are visual people – It's important to get away from “screen time” in order to see what's real. This helps us to appreciate art and re-connect with our common humanity.

Art gets people connecting and sharing ideas and thoughts about what they are looking and how they are interpreting it. I think it is an important part of opening discussions and sharing different ideas between people.

28

Page 29: Nanaimo Whats On Digest April 2013

WO Do you think kids today have enough exposure to the dif-ferent art forms?

JH I think it's starting again, I don' t really know. It's there but perhaps not as readily available as it used to be. We get little bits and pieces...but....hmm-mm...it's a good question! I think it's up to the art community to have venues and to share and to show to get kids interested in it. Young people are perhaps more technically inclined – the reach of the Internet has perhaps made some art more accessible in the sense that before the Internet it simply may not have been as easy to view a paintings from all over the world....but it's good to have access to local art as well so we can relate it to our own experience.

WO Is there something about the gulf islands and Vancouver Island that cultivates artists more so that in other parts of the country?

JH Absolutely. First of all the scenery we live in a beautiful part of the world. If you look at the city of Vancouver – it's an amazing metropolitan city that has a thriving art scene, but when you get away from the city you get the feel of the is-lands – a slower relaxed vibe that encourages artists to come together for support. Here it's slower and the beauty of where we live...the nature of the ocean and everything around us is inspiring.

WO Who is your favorite painter?

JH Hm-mm, there's quite a few I like Kathe Fraga – I really enjoy her pieces – mixed media. I like the colours she uses. Myself I like abstract pieces – yeah ...there's just so much amazing work out there...Jill Gallenstein is another one - she does beautiful pen and ink drawings. Locally I quite like Valerie Capewell – also (laughs) I quite like my mothers work (Gerda Hofman)!

WO What advice would you give to someone reading this who may be an aspiring artist?

JH (Pauses) ....Just start. Just start playing and practicing – buy some paints, or supplies for whatever media inspires you. Don't be afraid of mistakes – get out and talk to people. VIU has a Visual Arts program, and many of the local galleries and art groups, offer workshops and presentations. ….practice and play – look for inspiration all over this beautiful island we live.
