Getting Started… What is a résumé? A résumé is a snapshot of your experience, skills and qualifications. It is a professional introduction1 meant to capture the interviewer’s attention and convince them that you are an ideal candidate to interview. Emphasize the skills employers want in your resume! 1

• Leadership • Ability to work in a team

structure • Ability to communicate written

and verbally with people inside and outside an organization

• Problem solving skills

• Strong work ethic • Initiative • Analytical/quantitative skills • Flexibility/adaptability • Technical knowledge related

to the job • Interpersonal skills (relates well

with others)

Remember that your involvement in groups and organizations, college jobs and even projects in your coursework can count as experience if relevant to the job you are seeking. 2

1. Acknowledge the fact that your experiences count. 2. Use the vocabulary of your chosen field whenever possible on your

resume. 3. Examine and narrate your out-of-class experience through the lens of your

career goal. 4. Convey what you learned as well as what you did in your job, internship or

activity. 5. Quantify your actions whenever appropriate. 6. Sometimes it is better to cluster your career-related experiences in a

separate category labeled "Related Experience" rather than just lumping everything together as "Experience."

7. Take credit for your contributions. 8. Consider showcasing your skills and talents through a portfolio and

through LinkedIn.

Developing Good Statements…

Adapted from Southern Methodist University 3

Develop Strong Résumé Content Describing “duties” or “responsibilities” in an effective manner can be a daunting task. The process can be simplified by breaking the tasks into three distinctive components:

Goal The objective or purpose of the task

Effect The outcome or result of the task

Success The benefit of the task and how the contribution positively impacted the organization

Example

Consider the following task: Answered phones.

Goal: To answer the phone and direct call to appropriate staff

Effect: Answer the phone quickly and efficiently

Success: Minimized the amount of time a caller had to wait on the phone

Revised Statement:

Directed callers to appropriate staff quickly and efficiently, minimizing the caller wait time.

Time to Practice! Describe a task using the Goal, Effect, Success Process

Task: _______________________________________________________________________________

Goal: ______________________________________________________________________________

Effect: _____________________________________________________________________________

Success: ___________________________________________________________________________

Bulleted Statement: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Applicant Tracking Systems Guide to Applicant Tracking Systems and How to Optimize Your Resume for Them

5

Applicant Tracking System Definition Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are a type of software that act as a human resources database for organizing applicants. ATS are used by all sizes of companies to sift through large groups of job applicants, and to organize those applicants.

TIPS: 1. Remember that keywords that hiring managers and recruiters will search for are

generally skills, location and work experience. Keywords are easily the most important part of getting through ATS. Generic resumes are not likely to make it through the system successfully.

2. Be careful not to take part in keyword stuffing (adding in keywords and changing the text to hide it) as this can leave a negative impression on the hiring manager.

3. Creating a “Skills” section on your resume is a great way to include relevant keywords in a natural way. When including skills, think hard skills vs. soft skills. Hard skills are concrete, such as “Spanish fluency”, “financial analysis”, and “Python”. Soft skills are important to the employer too, but they are better proved in person than on your resume. Soft skills include, “hard working”, “team player”, and “positive attitude”.

4. Customizing the keywords in your resume based on the job posting is very important. Read the job posting carefully and notice which keywords are relevant to the position and how often they repeat. If you have skills or experience that match those keywords, include them in your resume.

5. Use a tool that scans your resume and the job posting and recommends to you the keywords you need to get through ATS. Jobscan is one such tool that you can use free and see real resume optimization results. Or you can use something like Wordle with your resume and job description to see what keywords show up.

6. Remember SHSU Career Services staff can help you with your resume! Resume critiques are offered via appointments, walk-in hours or via email.

Ms. Ima Boss Recruiting Coordinator Big Dogs Incorporated Box 2238 Huntsville, TX 77340 Dear Ms. Boss:

I am interested in applying for the sales representative position recently advertised at Sam Houston State University Career Services. The skills I have developed from my work experience and academic background support my strong interest in a sales career.

As you can see from my resume, the internship I had with Little Dogs Incorporated provided an opportunity for me to gain practical experience with account maintenance and cold-calling new accounts. In addition, I have worked as a waiter for the past four years, learning first-hand how to effectively manage customers and their demands. I have been formally commended by the management several times, being named “Employee of the Month.”

The strides your company has taken in the computer software market, namely the development of packages for use by pharmacies and hospitals, make Big Dogs Incorporated a leader in the industry.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss my interest and qualifications with you regarding the sales representative position. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (936) 294-1713 or [email protected]. Thank you for considering me for this position.
