  • BRIEF SUMMARY OF PROPOSED PROGRAM

    Minor in Science Education

A new "Science Education Minor" is being proposed that represents an interdisciplinarycollaboration among the sciences, with the program being administered in theDepartment of Geology & Astronomy. The science education reform efforts of the late1990>s recognize the important role that elementary and middle schools play in thedevelopment of science literacy in the American society. In the "No Child Left Behind"federal legislation, accountability for science literacy was specifically recognized withrequired national testing for accountability by the 2007-2008 academic year. ThePennsylvania Department of Education is conducting the first implementation of thescience Pennsylvania State Standard Assessment (PSSA).

Despite these national and state mandates, elementary teacher preparation at mostuniversities, including WCU, still require minimal coursework to develop science

understanding in future elementary teachers. For future elementary teachers with an

interest in science, the programs currently available only develop future teacher training

within a single field of science. The "Science Education Minor" will develop elementaryteacher science literacy in the four disciplines of science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth &Space Science, and Physics), as well as interdisciplinary science courses to develop

appreciation of the interdependence among the science disciplines. This curriculum willwell prepare future teachers in the content domains included in the Praxis Middle SchoolScience test, which will increase the employment prospects of candidates into the MiddleSchool science classrooms. Candidates who complete this curriculum will also increase

their elementary grade level employment prospects, since they will have the expertise toserve as science teaching mentors to other teachers in their elementary school buildings.

We envision this minor will improve the science education of elementary and middleschool students, as well as the science education ofWCU students.
