a home for creativity in downtown west chester

ART IS POWERFUL. It can incite real and permanent social change. It can spark emotions not yet experienced. It can draw out forgotten memories. It can connect us to the past and pave new paths into the future.

In simpler terms, art speaks to us.

The artists and creatives living in West Chester are leaving a legacy that goes above and beyond the tangible pieces they create. The respected working artists at the Chester County Art Association use their talents to teach and enrich the lives of young people. Students who are excited about the arts tend be more excited about learning overall, with a greater understanding for creative problem solving and higher literacy rates.

The arts also pack an economic punch. According to Americans for the Arts, the arts and culture industry results in over $166

billion in national economic exchanges every year. Locally, music, dance, and theatre performances at West Chester University and other arts venues bring visitors from the surrounding counties — and their spending power — to the streets of downtown West Chester.

It is our responsibilty to give back to those who have inspired us. We must act to make good things happen. Art needs an audience. Art needs supporters. Art needs us. Give a hand to creativity in West Chester by buying a painting, giving theater tickets, attending a concert, visiting a gallery, taking an art class, or making a donation.

We hope you find creative inspiration on the following pages of this, the very first Art Issue of Fig® West Chester.

Enjoy! The Fig® Team

We also have a nationally respected University with talented young people, a great faculty, and new creative ideas that regenerate each year. All of these attributes come together to make West Chester an arts destination for the region filled with creative energy.

What is your creative vision for the future of the Borough?

The success of West Chester is based on a process more than a product. It’s about bringing a diverse group of people together to talk about West Chester's strengths and how those strengths can position us for future success — that’s the process. As Mayor, I have a tremendous opportunity to make these conversations happen.

Mayor Comitta discusses her creative vision.

Mayor Carolyn Comitta

a c o n v e r s a t i o n w i t h

Mayor Comitta believes in the power of creativity. As a longtime supporter of the arts, she currently serves on the Advisory Board of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at West Chester University. She and her husband Tom are avid art collectors and have regularly hosted international music and arts students for over twenty years — the doorway to their home effectively serving as a doorway to the larger creative community.

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with the Mayor to discuss the role of the arts in the future of West Chester.

What are your thoughts on West Chester as an arts destination?

We have many inspiring art galleries in town highlighted by Gallery Walk twice a year. But the creative undercurrent in West Chester runs much deeper than what is seen in the galleries. People are beginning to collaborate in a way that benefits the broader community.

We just celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Turks Head Music Festival and hosted the inaugural Chester County Jazz Festival this summer — and it all happened right here in the borough. Residents like to live and be where they feel included and part of the community. Art events and music festivals create that feeling. The arts draw people together.

“The future of West Chester and the arts is about

creating partnerships."

What made you decide to become Mayor?

In 2006, while serving as a Borough Council member, I conducted my first town meeting. We invited people from all sectors and parts of the community including Borough and WCU department heads, residents from town, and business owners. We had a tremendous turnout and it was such an inspiring conversation.

Soon after, Madeleine Wing Adler (the former first female president of WCU) asked me, “What are you going to do next Carolyn, run for Mayor?” The rest is history. As Mayor, I am in a great position to effectively bring people together and facilitate the change that will move the borough of West Chester forward. To get involved and join the conversation, go to west-chester.com/mayor.php

While Meridian offers a host of highly convenient online banking options, we suspect West Chester customers might prefer visiting the branch to do business. On the walls hang photographs and paintings, three-dimensional sculptures, and even striking graphic design work. As you do your banking, your eyes are encouraged to wander those walls, to see things from another perspective, and to remember to recognize beauty in even the most routine of your daily activities. We applaud Meridian for making a trip to the bank more like an escape into the visual arts and less like an errand.

WHEN MERIDIAN BANK OPENED ITS WEST CHESTER OFFICE IN 2005, they not only brought a business to the heart of our community, they made a commitment to supporting its cultural side. Their 16 West Market Street location had been an active art gallery, so instead of filling it with typical bank appointments, their business was built around the existing gallery aesthetic. Meridian then helped found The Art Trust of Chester County, a nonprofit organization with the mission of linking business and the arts. The Art Trust mounts six to eight major exhibits each year and takes part in many local art events.

“The concept has been a great success,” says Meridian chairman and CEO Chris Annas. “It’s much more than some pictures hung on a wall in some corner of a bank branch. This is a full-service bank AND a real art gallery. It demonstrates Meridian’s uniquely innovative approach to banking and our high level of support for organizations and causes throughout our growing service area.” Liz Ruff, Art Trust president, agrees. “It’s exciting to bring new art to the area and grow 09

artist Juan Terreroan uncommon

journeyART ISN’T SUPPOSED TO BE TYPICAL. And neither is the artist.

This is what comes to mind when you first meet Juan Terrero. His soulful presence belies years of harsh life experience. Etched into his arms are marks from this past; many of these tattoos were acquired during time spent in prison. "I was on the streets at age 13," says Juan.

Juan's first foray into the art world occurred underneath the streets of New York City, as he and his friends left their grafittied marks on subway cars. Having lived in the Bronx, Miami, and the Dominican Republic, Juan has seen — and experienced — it all.

Today, Juan can be found working on his art at Ruins Recycled. In the spirit of rejuvenation, all of Juan’s work is textured with the fibers of 100-year-old salvaged wood. You can also find his mural work decorating the walls of West Chester's Roots Cafe, commissioned by owner and chef Dan Celluci.

A demolition man and constructionist by day, Juan is a caring family man who expresses his freedom and new outlook on life through his work. “I want to people to see and know my past,” says Juan.

It’s a truly remarkable story of a man who hasn’t taken the traditional route to get to where he is today. And every painting is an insight into his journey.

ARTIST AND CRAFTSMAN RICH DUNBRACK sees the world a little differently. Where the rest of us see objects destined for the landfill, Rich re-imagines new and exciting uses for them. Dunbrack hunts in scrap yards, demolition sites, and flea markets throughout the country to discover treasures yet to be reborn. His work infuses new purpose and exuberance into that which conventional wisdom tells us is no longer useful.

Rich’s art embraces the natural beauty of imperfection and the unlimited universe of possibilities. A magical imagination, a touch of humor, and materials gleaned from the American landscape comprise Rich’s wonderfully creative work. Re-imagined sleigh

rails, antique croquet balls, boot jacks, musical instruments, stained glass, and architectural

effects from Victorian-era homes combine with centuries-old, reclaimed barn wood to form whimsical, one-of-a-kind pieces — armoires, bookcases, sideboards, tables, and grandfather clocks.

“My work is sort of forever stuff, heirloom stuff,” says Dunbrack. “It is built to last for

generations. The materials that go into making the pieces have stood the test of time. Some of the

components are already hundreds of years old. If what you put around your house has good vibes and good energy,” Rich explains, “how can you go wrong? It’s about picking up things that speak to you…things that are good for the soul. You surround yourself with that, and you’re going to be a happy person.”

Rich's work is collected throughout the country and is available locally at the Merchant of Menace Re-Imaginers Gallery in Marshallton.

HER PENCIL FLOATS ATOP A BLANK PAGE of paper, leaving thin lines in its wake. Pausing from her concentration she looks up — pink bandana tied tight across her head, wide eyes peering through rectangular rimmed glasses. “It’s for a girlfriend of mine who’s pregnant,” states Carrie Buller. “She saw my artwork online and asked if I’d be willing to paint something for her and her child.” The image of a bed began to take shape as a light-hearted conversation ensued about the number of monkeys jumping on the bed in the popular nursery rhyme.

This is the scene at the Chester County Arts Association (CCAA) as cancer survivors channel their thoughts and enjoy conversation centered around art. With a belief in a holistic approach to cancer, The Chester County Hospital supports the creation of the group, founded by Chester County Hospital Oncology Social Worker Marge Lang and Chester County Hospital cancer survivor and Art Therapist Sharon DeNault five years ago with the added encouragement of Sharon’s oncologist, William Luginbuhl, M.D.

The cancer survivors’ art therapy group is one of seven support groups currently offered at The Chester County Hospital. It augments the breakthrough clinical care provided at the hospital, affiliated with the Penn Cancer Network, by a roster of more than a dozen oncology specialists who use progressive technology and procedures to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. The art support group happened after Sharon, as a

cancer patient, spent time with a trial group for general cancer support that covered a multitude of mediums including Art Therapy. It was the curative effects from that brief art session, combined with a personal background in the arts, that inspired her to encourage the hospital to co-establish the group with Marge. The tightly woven group laughs, chats, and consoles between strokes of vibrant acrylics and subdued watercolors. Projects in various stages begin to materialize as everyone’s focus is split between the easels in front of them and the conversation around the room. And so, on a Thursday evening when the halls of the Chester County Art Association fall quiet and calm, a light emanates from a room in the back and outbursts of laughter are heard — to remind us what it’s like to feel alive.

“IN 1990 I DISCOVERED BEADS AND THEIR MANY WONDROUS ATTRIBUTES AND CREATIVE POTENTIAL AS A FINE ART MEDIUM.”

After twenty years I am still captivated today by the qualities of color, light reflection, refraction, and texture of beads as a unique fine art medium. I believe they lend themselves beautifully to my subject matter while maintaining an engaging and thought provoking examination from the viewer.

I’m often asked how many beads I think I’ve stitched together! There’s really no way for me to know, as I’m strictly an improvisational bead worker. I don’t graph or count the beads. I only know that it’s been many, many, many beads. Too many to ever count. By its very nature, beadwork gives me a sense of completion.

While working I become meditative; beadwork is inherently a meditative and inward seeking process. As the rhythm of the beadwork stills and quiets my mind, a natural force begins on an almost subconscious level, which has inevitably and most always provided me with the means of creatively finding answers to many of my life’s toughest questions.

Find Kim Z's work at The Art Trust in West Chester or online at kimzart.com.

“THE EXCITEMENT AND UNPREDICTABILITY OF THE RAKU PROCESS FIRES THE IMAGINATION, ALTHOUGH IT IS AN UNFORGIVING AND DEMANDING MEDIUM, WHICH CAN TEST THE ARTIST TO THE LIMITS.”

I find it to be the best medium to express my work, allowing exploration in varied techniques and opportunities I wouldn’t otherwise have with a typical kiln firing. The beauty of any ceramics is that it involves the magic and science of the four elements:  earth, water, and air. The fourth and most important of all being fire. It’s the fire that converts the clay from soft and perishable into an imperishable object.

Perhaps the child in me is still completely enamored with the magic of fire because I am still inspired with awe every time I remove a piece from the kiln and see the wonder of colors the mix of fire, glaze, and reduction of oxygen can produce. And although the very nature of ceramics requires an artist to plan each project very carefully before proceeding, I find myself relying very much on my intuition to see the project through to the end.

“WE LEARN ABOUT ancient civilizations from the art they left behind, and if we don’t support the arts, well then we’re going to have a pretty short story.” And so, everyday, down at the blue cinder block building at the west end of Gay Street, Darcie Goldberg is harboring a facility that documents life through the minds and hands of children, casual artists, and professionals.

Darcie Goldberg became the executive director for the Chester County Art Association in 1998, although she had her hand in the art scene here in West Chester long before that. Over the years, Darcie has encouraged artists to create and share; she

has poured herself into people through time, persistence, and dedication. Perhaps, this is where we separate her from others with the title “Executive Director” as we sat down to chat with her on the back patio at the art center, surrounded by the sounds of buzzing campers making new friends on their lunch break. Smaller campers were inclined to take a seat right next to Darcie, older campers couldn’t wait to tell her of their day so far, teen volunteers were eager to report their recent camper successes, and adult teachers were beaming just to see their friend.

WHERE ART MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Page 28: Fig West Chester Fall 2012

MARY-ELLEN H. ALLEN, ESQ. President, Board of Directors

Chester County Art Association truly believes that art does make a difference and has involved community members in the arts since its inception. A renovated and updated facility will allow CCAA to continue to realize our mission to promote experiences in the arts through award-winning classes, community outreach, and a wide array of solo and member shows. I am honored to serve as President of the Board of Directors during this exciting time as we create a building that will improve our organization and enrich the community for years to come.

WHERE ART MATTERS

CCAA was founded as The Sketch Club by several prominent artists and community leaders including renowned illustrators William Palmer Lear, N.C. Wyeth, and Dr. Christian Brinton,

an internationally known art critic and early promoter of the Modernist art movement.

CHESTER COUNTY ART ASSOCIATION IS A NONPROFIT CULTURAL ORGANIZATION THAT PROMOTES PARTICIPATION IN THE ARTS THROUGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION, EXHIBITIONS, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH. CCAA BELIEVES THAT ART DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND HAS ENHANCED THE COMMUNITY BY

INVOLVING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND ASPIRATIONS IN THE ARTS SINCE 1931.

“…Making Chester county more actively and courageously art conscious… it is a congenial task.” Dr. Christan Brinton

Horace Pippin enters two paintings in CCAA’s Annual Invitational. N.C. Wyeth comments on the fine quality of his work and plans a solo show.

The Sketch Club has 36 members and $1 membership. The original group met weekly to sketch and plan exhibits, many of them featuring the works of the young Andrew Wyeth as well as those of other soon-to-be celebrated artists such as Horace Pippin, Tom Bostelle, Barclay Rubincam, Philip Jamison, Peter Sculthorpe, and Harry Dunn.

In those early years, members met mostly in private homes. Finally, in the early 1950s, local resident Mary E. Page Allinson donated more than an acre of land on the edge of West Chester. It was here that the present art center was built in 1953. In 1974, another gift from West Chester resident W.W. “Chick” Laird expanded the property to a total of five acres. Bequests from Stewart Huston and Alison Farmer Wescott enabled the addition of a second gallery as well as several spacious studios in the mid 1970s.

1950SMulti-faceted and devoted CCAA President Albert Davis designs the Bradford Avenue building. November 15, 1952 groundbreaking. September 13, 1953 building officially opened.

In the 81 years since its founding, CCAA has held to its mission as a community-minded organization and has grown almost exponentially to include an amazing array of activities and “ArtReach” programs. These include popular summer art camps; FREE art classes in Kennett Square; and a satellite facility known as the Exton Square Studio, a gallery/gift shop/classroom space in the Exton Square Mall. There is also an ever-expanding curriculum of classes for adults and children alike, with vital scholarships provided for those most in need.

CCAA at any one time can be home to the cancer survivors’ art therapy group, weekly Irish dance classes, or yoga classes. CCAA artists have, for several years, worked with veterans at the Coatesville VA Medical Center’s In-Patient Psychiatry Unit. CCAA has been a venue for community groups like Build-a-Band and for several years partnered with West Chester University and the Chester County Intermediate Unit to bring to West Chester free field-trip performances by the Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences on Tour.

Since 1973 CCAA has hosted ‘Adventure Trips’ to museums and private collections in Philadelphia, Washington, and New York as well as traveling to attend numerous blockbuster Broadway shows.

WHERE CREATIVITY IS BORN

WHERE THE COMMUNITY CONNECTS Volunteers have long been what keeps CCAA going, whether they are Summer Teen Volunteers who help out in the classrooms, adult students and artists who help with managing and hanging exhibitions, or retirees who help maintain the art center building. All of these supporters put the “community” in community art center. And CCAA’s teacher-artists are the finest practicing artists in the area, all of them holding bachelor’s or master’s degrees in art. CCAA offers classes at all levels for children, teens,

and adults throughout the year in all media: drawing, ceramics, painting — whether you’re a landscape, portrait, or abstract artist — sculpture, jewelry making, anime, printmaking, photography, fashion design, multi-media collage, and 3D art. And this is just a sampling. An award-winning CCAA class may be 8 or 10 weeks long, giving a strong foundation in technique, methods, art history, or a one-day workshop that adds a new approach or medium to your artistic repertoire. “CCAA has graciously given the Chester County Hospital’s Art Therapy Support group the space to have our art time together. The love and support they have shown us has certainly made a huge difference in helping to raise the spirits of those in the group.” SHARON DENAULT Adult Volunteer & Leader of Cancer Survivors’ Art Therapy Group “I have been taking art classes at CCAA since I was 5 or 6, so for almost 10 years. CCAA has meant so much to me; the art center has helped me improve my skills and technique and I have developed so many close relationships with the terrific people there. It's great working as a volunteer now! I love working with kids and seeing all their amazing artwork. It's especially neat when kids come back to CCAA over the years because you really see the progress they make as artists.” SHEA MCNEIL Young Student & Teen Volunteer

“As a new resident in the area and beginning art student, I particularly valued the great instructors and training at CCAA plus the chance to make new friends there who shared my art interest.” FANNY WARREN Adult Student & Volunteer

CCAA WAS STARTED BY A GROUP OF HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED AND COMMITTED ARTISTS, and that legacy continues on in artists like Dennis Haggerty, Philip Jamison, Charles Jay, and Adrian Martinez, whose much-sought-after artwork is collected by private collectors and museums alike. Their work represents the incredible depth, range, and richness of art being created today. As CCAA turns another page in its history — heading toward its 82nd year — a new generation of CCAA artists and teachers continues to demand the very best from themselves and their art.

DENNIS HAGGERTY 1947-2012 To become a recognized artist requires years of dedication and passion: Dennis Haggerty had these. He spent all his years making a difference with his art here in West Chester and afar. But it was not only with his art that he made a difference; as a teacher, he inspired, encouraged, and sparked creativity in children in ways that would stay with them for a lifetime. He truly touched the future. Dennis will be sadly missed: he left such a mark on our community — he painted the sky.

MONIQUE KENDIKIAN- SARKESSIAN

BIO: Jeff’s encaustic paintings and silk screens have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. He’s worked on commissioned murals—including the art at Iron Hill restaurants—and with the City of Philadelphia on a mural for SEPTA. He was the recipient of the prestigious Philadelphia Museum of Art Purchase Award and an Arts Fellowship from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. jeffschaller.com

BIO: Monique earned her BFA in painting at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Her work has been shown at numerous exhibitions across the country: in New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Boston, Delaware, and in the Philadelphia area. “I love the process of painting,” she says, “how the paint glides on from one color to the next, and what happens when colors touch...” moniquekendikiansarkessian.com

BIO: Erica is a Philadelphia area native. She is both self-taught and largely influenced by her education at Tyler School of Art. She has been involved in several solo shows, group shows, and donated pieces to charity auctions. Ms. Brown has a background in art education and art therapy. She currently resides and has her studio in West Chester. ebcbrown.com

Jeff Schaller has recently partnered with other CCAA artists on the Size Matters show and the Chester County Open Studio Tour. Monique Kendikian-Sarkessian’s work often wins Excellence Awards in CCAA Members’ Shows; she taught the Learning from the Masters and Watercolor/Acrylic classes at CCAA’s Summer Art Camps this year. One of Erica Brown’s large-scale works is currently featured in a mural installation at the Daily Local News in its Community MediaLab and Conference space.

BIO: Rhoda is an incredibly sought-after ceramic artist continuing to push the envelope of how all the qualities of clay can be intuited and explored. Kahler works in tile and sculpture (of all sizes) and is widely known. Her work, she says, “usually starts with a fortuitous glimpse of some random point of inspiration catching my eye, forcing me to stop and take a closer look, embracing texture, line, and emotion.” rhodakahler.com

BIO: Karen creates nuanced and intriguing metal sculpture. She has exhibited in several galleries and group shows in the US and Europe. After earning her MFA, she turned to teaching and worked at the Carnegie Museum of Art as a program manager and also teaching a range of studio classes.  “I like working with steel,” Delaney says, “because of its strength and color and the immediacy of the welding technique.” karendelaneysculpture.com

John Hannafin has been a particularly successful participant in two recent plein air painting festivals/art shows/sales:Plein Air Brandywine Valley and CCAA’s Paint the Town. Rhoda Kahler’s solo exhibition schedule is daunting; still, she makes time to regularly teach the Teen Clay class and Summer Camp ceramic classes. She has just been awarded a Guest Artist residency at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Karen Delaney has just finished teaching a teen class on creating chess boards and sculptural chess sets by hand. Her work was recently featured at a show organized by CCAA at Penn State Great Valley.

WHERE CREATIVITY INSPIRES OUR FUTURE

VICTORIA WYETH, Visionary

“My family has a long history with CCAA and in this community. I choose to be part of CCAA particularly for the children. It is a positive, happy, light-hearted and safe place for them. I’ve been — for such a long time — a huge advocate of getting the community involved in the arts. You come to CCAA and you see these teachers with so much creativity, girls designing prom dresses with 3D skirts of tissue paper, and you realize what a crucial outlet this is for kids. They can discuss their emotions, explore the psychological, social, intellectual — and feel cool doing it. You don’t have to be a Rembrandt, Picasso, or Wyeth to make and experience art. And Darcie is awesome; it has been her enthusiasm and spearheading of amazing arts projects that have kept me involved with CCAA. I’ve spoken on behalf of CCAA, acted as juror and member of the Board, have hosted Halloween balls, and even auctioned myself off for this place.

Thinking ahead to the future: I hope CCAA can even further expand its scholarship programs so that more kids can be exposed to the arts and call this place home. I feel those in the community with financial resources have a moral obligation to support the arts and to help with this type of growth.”

“The visual arts engage children in a way that nothing else can. The arts show children that there can be more than one answer to a question — and when children see their parents encouraging participation in the visual arts — through extracurricular classes like those CCAA offers year-round — it shows them what the adults in their lives believe is important.” JILL BENJAMIN, Teaching Artist

JOIN USTHE ADDITION AND PROPOSED RENOVATIONS will include a new ceramics studio with an outdoor studio terrace, digital media studio, a faculty workroom and library, and gallery shop. Renovations will take place in the existing lobby, art galleries, and sculpture and flexible studios. Sustainability will play a large role, including incorporating natural daylighting throughout and the use of recycled building materials.

“My hope for the future of Chester County Art Association is that it continues to serve so many adults and children so well, at all their many levels of talent and interest. We are blessed to have a community art center right in West Chester where anyone and everyone who comes in the door can have an experience in the arts.” Vivian Lasko, Donor and supporter of CCAA

“The planned renovations will ensure that CCAA’s important contributions to the arts and the community will be available for future generations. The building and program upgrades will also allow CCAA to participate in the new technologies available to the arts.”

40 fresh face: jack’s steaks & shakes

JACK IS BACK! The charismatic man that many say started the West Chester restaurant renaissance over thirty years ago is back in town. In 1980, when there were just a couple eateries in town, Jack McFadden opened the Restaurant & Bar (now home to Kildare’s) on Gay Street and others soon followed suit. Well-known for taking old buildings, remodeling and infusing them with new life, he recently returned to his hometown to open his latest foodie venture, Jack’s Steaks & Shakes.

So why cheesesteaks? Was this something you always wanted to do? I haven’t eaten meat in forty years, and I love a good cheesesteak, so I came up with an alternative version. I created one with Ahi tuna, sliced paper thin, fired it up with onions and peppers, and put in on a roll with wasabi aioli and I thought, man, everyone has to try this. It tastes like a cheesesteak but it’s healthy.

This feels like a very “grown-up” cheesesteak place. What’s the most defining characteristic of Jack’s Steaks & Shakes? You’re getting a quality sandwich here. All of the ingredients have been researched to craft a quality cheesesteak, whether you choose grass-fed beef from New Zealand or locally grown chicken or Ahi tuna. This is the Cadillac of cheesesteak shops (laughter). We’re also serving sweet potato fries, low-fat yogurt shakes, and “Pauline’s cole slaw,” a special family cole slaw based on my mother’s recipe made with non-fat Greek yogurt, parmesan cheese, oregano, cumin, and apple cider vinegar.

You took a dilapidated building that had been abandoned for 20 years and restored it in a green fashion. It seems like you’re in the business of historic restoration as much as you are restaurants. It’s true, I’ve always restored old buildings, but I design them based on the fact that they are going to house a restaurant. All of the floors in this building are “green”, made out of marmoleum, the ceiling beams are crafted from recycled wood, and the stone we uncovered on the walls is all local Serpentine stone from the New Street quarry.

So what’s next? Any plans to retire? No, I’m planning on opening 100 Jack’s Steaks & Shakes (laughter).

Good to have you back in town Jack; we're hungry for more.

Open 11am-10pm Mon-Sat, 12pm–9pm Sundays. Take-out window open 10am–1am Mon-Fri and 10am–3am Fri & Sat. Restoration done by Tony Sume Restorations. Floors by Greenable.
