I. DOING YOUR THESIS WITH MICROSOFT WORD
The style used for the title of the chapter is Heading
1. The style used for text under Heading 1 is 2nd Order
Para. First order titles are automatically capitalized,
bold and centered.
A. STARTING UP
The style used for the 2nd level heading is Heading 2
and the style used for text under Heading 2 is 2nd Order
Para. Second order titles are automatically capitalized
and bold.
1. This Is a Third Order Heading
The style used for the 3rd heading is Heading 3, and
the style used for text under Heading 3 is 3rd Order Para.
Third-order headings are to be upper-lower case and bold.

That Word Handles the Second Line Correctly
(indented 1.5)
The style used for the 4th level heading is
Heading 4 and the style used for text under Heading 4 is
4th Order Para. Fourth-order headings are to be upper-
lower case, italics and bold.

and the text follows on the same line as the heading. The

B. TABLE OF CONTENTS
To populate your thesis into the Table of Contents,
put your cursor in the sample text of the Table of Contents
and right click. Select Update Field and then Update
Entire Table. Your thesis headings, down to the 4th Order
Level, will form a new Table of Contents automatically.
The Table of Contents should always be updated before you
submit your file for thesis review. Check for chapters on
even pages and missed letters or numbers.
C. FIGURES/TABLES
Use any figure/table format you like and be
consistent. To format the captions, use the style names:
FIGURE CAPTION and Table Caption. The styles automatically
number captions for you. To update the Lists of
Figures/Tables, right click in the gray text field, select
Update Field and then Update Entire Table.

If your figure or table is copied from a reference,
you will need to note the source with a reference citation
in the caption. (From [x]) or From (Smith). If your
figure or table was taken from a reference and changes have

D. FONTS
This document and these styles are set to use Arial
font. There are templates available in Courier and Times
New Roman also.
E. FOOTNOTES
All footnotes must be sequential throughout the
document. In the footnote, it is not necessary to tab the
second line of the footnote. The text should wrap to the
margin when the style Footnote Text is applied.
F. COVER PAGE, REPORT DOCUMENTATION PAGE, ETC.
These pages are located in the front portion of this
document. The heading style used is Cover Page Heading.
This style is formatted the same as other headings but does
not display in the Table of Contents.
G. LIST OF ACRONYMS AND ABBREVIATIONS
Required when six (6) or more acronyms are defined and
used in a thesis. List in two columns, alphabetically, with
acronym first. This list appears after the List of Tables.
H. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This is in addition to the abstract and requires much
more detail. Mandatory for OPERATIONS RESEARCH, ELECTRICAL
AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING and SYSTEMS ENGINEERING (DL).
Optional for the other curricula.

Not required but generally included.
