FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We are almost half-way through Term 2 and moving into the

assessment period quickly. Teachers are beginning the

intensive process of writing students’ reports and preparing

students for their mid-year exams and assessments. Parents

should be monitoring their children’s study habits at this

critical stage to ensure that they optimize their results by

Disney Comes To Rosehill

Arts faculty. Two performances of this multi-faceted

production were run in the ECA, which was transformed for

the day with tiered seating and a sparkling back-drop.

College Activities

The Japanese Study Tour is almost half-way through its

I would like to take this opportunity to ask parents to support

us in enforcing the College Uniform Policy. The sudden chill in

Principal Report Continued

If students require extra clothing, they may wear

extra items under the white shirt, as long as they

are not visible, for example long-sleeved T-shirts,

spencers/thermal tops.Hoodies will be confiscated

if worn, even if accompanied by a note. We also

ask for parents’ support in ensuring that girls are

wearing their winter skirts correctly, accompanied

by either white socks or navy, not black, tights.

Boys also need to wear white socks. All students

should by now be in their full winter uniforms.

Writing From Japan

As I write this it is 9am in the morning in Kyoto and

the weather will be high 20’s and sunny. We are

on day seven or our Japanese study tour and we

are learning so much about the culture and the

language, not to mention the food. Mr Hayakawa

and Ms Smart have certainly organised a well-

structured trip and maximised every moment of

every day.

The highlight for me was our visit to the Hiroshima

museum. It brought home to us all the perils of

nuclear weapons and the need for the world to

push the non-proliferation treaty. Mankind did not

fully understand the power of what it was

releasing when the bomb was dropped.

Tomorrow we visit Koggakan High School. Mr

Hayakawa has just informed me that I will have to

wear a suit and tie for the day which will be a

change from my sightseeing clothes. Not looking

forward to it. Must sign off now. I need to

practice my Japanese speeches once more.

Year 8 Boys Soccer

On Monday 18th May, Gabriel Sarpa took a fierce

bunch of Year 8 boys out to Fairbairn Park for the

Year 8 boys soccer tournament. The weather

helped start off the day in a very positive manner

when the boys went to face Buckley Park College

in their first match of the day. Christopher

Parathyras showed great leadership as the team

captain for the day and played excellent against

Buckley Park alongside fellow team mates Robert

Broome and Michael Trotta who also were the

outstanding players for the first game.

Unfortunately the boys fell short of Buckley Park

and lost with the scores 1-0.

With a loss to our Rosehill Boys the students were

still strong hearted when going up against Mt

Alexander College in their second game. During

the first half the boys lost little hope when Mt

Alexander scored one against them however

towards the very end of the first half they came

firing back to get another 5 goals against Mt

Alexander with Emmet McEldowney scoring an

amazing header goal in the last half of the game.

Other outstanding players in this game were

Xavier Saly, Peter Frasca and Matthew Ciavarella

who was subbed in towards the end of the game

and his first touch of the ball landed them an

amazing goal. This 2-5 winning game saw our boys

head into the semi-finals against the unbeaten

Strathmore College.

Our boys played for their lives against Strathmore,

not letting any ball come near their goals. Their

defense throughout the entire game was honestly

amazing which resulted in an ending game result

of 0-0 and ended up in a penalty shootout.

Emmet McEldowney, Christopher Parathyras and

Mikail Zeybek were our three brave boys to take

our penalty shots. The boys placed their shots

against the Strathmore goal keeper however the

keeper was much too good for them saving each

goal kicked his way. Riley Gutterson, our

outstanding goal keeper for the day, stepped up

bravely to try and defend the shots being taken at

him from the fierce Strathmore boys however was

not successful in saving the goals in the end giving

Strathmore the advantage to move forward into

the final playoff against Sirius College.

I would like to thank all the boys who participated

in the day for their outstanding behavior and

cooperation and also a massive thank you to Mr

Gabriel Sarpa for putting together our amazing

team and for coaching the boys so well.

Senior Boys Soccer

On Monday 11th May the senior boys’ soccer

team competed in the Moonee Valley District

Competition at Fairbairn Park. After a poor start

with a 1-0 loss to Mount Alexander College, the

boys turned it around winning the next three

matches in a row against EKC, Strathmore SC and

Buckley Park SC to finish first. Najeem Yussuf,

Vincent Bartolo and Matthew Pernasilici all scoring

doubles in the competition to help the team

progress. Konstantinos Partsanakis and Jordan

Motsianos controlled the middle of the park and

both were excellent leaders for the team. There

were some excellent performances from the Year

11 students, with Marcus Cini scoring after an

excellent solo effort. Louis Kleftogiannis and Joel

Markovic displayed some desperate defending

with Aydin Kesici in goals for the team to only

concede two goals for day. The team will go onto

the next round of competition in Term 3 on

Tuesday 28th July at Galvin Park. We wish them all

the best.

Bully Zero Foundation Presentation

Guest Speaker: Ali Halkic

In our second presentation from the Zero Bully

Foundation, Ali Halkic’s powerful presentation to

the students centred on the suicide of his son

Allem. We listened to Allem’s story, some of us in

the audience openly wept for the inconsolable

man in front of us and for his young boy who

thought he had no other option but to end his life.

Ali believed that because his son was home, in his

room, he was safe. He couldn’t fathom that there

was danger lurking in Allem’s room in the form of

social media. Ali’s advice was for students to

communicate with their parents, to have parents

as friends on social media and to ask for help if

they are victims of bullying. Suicide should NEVER

be an option. We were all so focussed on Ali’s

every single word. Our attention could not shift

focus. Hopefully, the presentation served its

purpose.

Bullying Presentation Reflections From Students

While watching this presentation I learnt the

consequences of cyber bullying. We heard in

detail the about the death of a boy called Allem

from his father. It made me think twice about the

choices that I make. Sarah from the Essendon

Football Club told us how the players got teased

about the supplement saga. I didn’t realise

players couldn’t even go out for dinner because

everyone would just pick on them. While listening

to all the stories I thought to myself is it worth

having Facebook or not?

Bianca

Oscar from the Bully Zero Foundation talked to us

about Bullying. He was telling us about some sad

facts and that bullying kills. Along with Oscar

came Ali, whose son Allem took his own life after

being cyber bullied. Allem was 17 years old when

he died. Ali’s story touched me because his son

was my age when he took his own life and it

could have been prevented. Now I pity anyone

who bullies another person and they should be

jailed. Matt

The bullying presentation had an impact on me. It

made me think about what I do online and how I

speak to people. It is just so heartbreaking to see

how families deal with the death of a child and

what they have to go through when losing their

loved ones. I can’t imagine the pain of losing a

loved one. Ali, Allem’s dad was just heartbreaking

to watch. After watching this presentation, I will

now do all I can to stop bullying going on when I

can.

Charlee

The bullying presentation meant a lot to me. It

made me realise exactly how much bullying can

and will put someone down. It’s not fair that

someone will feel so sad to the point that they

don’t want to live anymore. If someone commits

suicide, it affects families and friends forever.

Bullying is something I would never participate in,

because if I made someone feel so bad to the

point they didn’t want to live, I would never

forgive myself. I felt really bad for Ali, because he

lost his son and then also his marriage. You never

know how someone is going to react with what

you say to them, so you should always keep that

in mind.
