GREAT MYTHS OF LEADRSHIP IN PRACTICEGREAT MYTHS OF LEADRSHIP IN PRACTICE
Undoubtedly, leadership is much talked and written about
subject in the management literature. In behavioural training
too, leadership has the top priority. There are many managers
who still believe that leadership is a born talent, leadership is
only for top management and one should have an inbuilt
charismatic personality to be a leader.
Two of the most insightful leadership theorists, namely
Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus in their book titled Leaders:The strategies for taking charge published in 1985 identified five
great leadership myths.

MYTH OF LEADERSHIP
The realityis
that 99 percent of
all leadership
occurs not form
the top,but from
the middle of an
organisation

1)Leadership is rare skill
There is a widespread belief that leadership is
rare because leadership skills are rare with
people in organization. But the fact remain isthat many people possess leadership
competency within them. We realize this when
opportunities are extended to them to
demonstrate their leadership prowess. The
formal organization structures discouragepeople to exhibit leadership behaviour.

2)L
eaders are born, not made
Biographies of great leaders and stories surrounding
them create a picture that leadership is a born talent. But the fact is that many leadership skills and
competencies can be learned. However, there is no
simple formula or model through which leadership
can be developed. This involves a rigorous process
and many times a lifetime effort is required.

3)L
eaders are charismatic
There is a tendency to think that one need to be stylish,
smart, ad charming in appearance to become a leader.
This is only half true. In reality, successful leadership
practices and behaviours contribute for a leadership
rather than charisma self-leading a person to effective
leadership behaviour.

4)Leaders exists only at the
top of an organization
Organizations have played into this myth by focusing
leadership efforts only on top management. The fact isthat leadership is required at every level of operation in
the organization. One has to be a good leader even in a
single person operation to excel in that. Therefore,
there must be multiplication of leadership roles.

5) The Leader controls,
directs and manipulates
Leadership is a role of empowering the followers as
opposed to popular misnomer leadership as powerseeking role. Leadership is epitome of equity,
fairplay and sacrifice and not the act of
manipulation. Effective leaders ensure rewards to
others at the cost of self comfort. Further,
facilitation is what leaders engage in and notcontrolling and directing.

6)Theperson with the title, most rank
or thehighest position is the leader
True leadershipis not based on position or rank.
It is based on action,performance,ability,and
effectiveness. Weall relate to working for those
people who wereplaced in leadership roles whodid more to demoralizeand destroy thebusiness
than anything else.

7)Good leaders have moreeducation
than other people
Educational degrees may mean you
havea good education, but it doesn't necessarily
mean you area good leader. When it comes to
leadership,experienceis thebest teacher.
In the military, you start out at the
bottom. You areplaced in leadershippositions and
closelyevaluated. As your experiencebroadens, so
does your responsibility. This practical experience
is reinforced with weeks and months of formal
training throughout theindividual's career.

MYTH CONTD
To become rich, I have to be miserable.
To be successful, I have to be unfair to mycustomers and employees.
I must dominate to win.
I must know everything.
