Central Venous Catheter (CVC) Insertion Trainer By Shuli Leiken, MMS, PA-C This trainer is designed to allow the students to become familiar with: The physical setup for CVC insertion Handling of the supplies required for CVC insertion The steps of CVC placement Tactile feedback – the feel of passing a needle/syringe through solid (tissue), entering a space (vessel) and drawing fluid (blood/air) into the syringe Ingredients : 1 Foam pipe insulation, cut into 6 1ft lengths 1 roll Duct tape 12 Corks 1 bottle Super glue 6 CVC Insertion trays 1 pack Powdered drink mix, color of your choice Water for drink mix Instructions: 1. Wrap the pipe insulation with duct tape, leaving the ends uncovered. 2. Seal any holes in the corks with super glue. 3. Spread super glue on outside of cork and insert it into one end of the cylinder (should be a snug fit). 4. Cover corked end with duct tape. 5. Let glue cure (several hours/days – per glue instructions). 6. Mix powdered drink packet with water until diluted to color desired. 7. Holding upright until sealed, fill cylinders with drink mix. 8. Place second cork in remaining cylinder opening, keeping liquid inside. Leiken - October 2019

Pearls: Use additional duct tape to seal holes after CVCs removed, if needed Refill Trainers during use by removing taped cork Use a tray/pad/towel to contain liquid leaks Cut corks in half to minimize supplies
