22. VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did you choose this program?
I was really impressed with the videos on the IE University website that gave a snapshot o f its academics and student life. However, we later found out that we would bestudying in Madrid rather than Segovia. I also learned that IE was a very well regarded business schoo l in Europe and the world. Lastly, I wanted to have the opportunity totravel around Europe during breaks since it was my first time go ing to Europe.
I chose the program because the idea o f taking entrepreneurship courses appealed to me, I had 6 years o f Spanish experience, and IE was a very well regarded universityinternationally.
Because I had a great experience with the ExCEL program and Sean O'Connell encouraged me to do it since most transfer students don't. Best advise and decision ever!
I chose this program because I wanted to study in Madrid.

25. 34. How, if at all, does the structure o f the courses differ from those atUSC? Did you like or dislike these differences?
We had more class discussions in class at IE than at USC, which I liked a lo t. They also have even more group pro jects and papers than USC, which sometimes was nice, but o ther times it was tough to coordinate since we all lived all over the city o f Madrid. Overall, IE focuses more on papers and presentations than exams, which I liked. Alsoa couple o f our courses had jo int pro fessors and they would switch o ff every few weeks.
Course schedules are not standard every week as they are at USC. Certain courses start at the beginning o f the semester. Certain ones start in the middle, while o thers endin the middle. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. Your final exams and periods o f stress are far more spread out through the semester, which is nicebecause you don't have to be cramming for 5 exams all at once. On the o ther hand, the schedule can be hard to get used to since the classes you're taking each weekchange so frequently. Also , classes are much more discussion heavy than USC, which I find to be much more lecture based. IE also makes much more use o f casestudies than USC. I liked IE's style much better.
The classes are very small. About 15 students per class. The pro fessors are great and easy to understand and get help from since the classes are so small.
Very very few courses have regular homework assignments. I sometimes liked or disliked these differences depending on the course (ex: it was great not havingassignments in general, but fo r classes like accounting - having access to more example material and content to work with would have been appreciated)

26. 35. Are there courses or pro fessors that you would particularrecommend? Please explain:
I would recommend New Venture Creation with Gotsopo lous as you get a really so lid understanding o f what it takes to start your own company, and you review many casestudies to see where o thers have succeeded and gone wrong. I would also recommend Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets with Julio Castro as he's a very energeticand engaging pro fessor, and I learned a lo t about businesses in Latin America.
Aleksios Gotsoplo lous' courses on New Venture Creation & Entrepreneurial Management and Generating Business Value from New Technologies are amazing. He's afantastic teacher who understands his students very well. Tashfeen Sohail is really good at getting students interested in the subject matter with thought-provokingdiscussion but he is not easy in his demands on the students. Julio de Castro is the Chair o f IE's Entrepreneurship Department and he is a really fun teacher. His class onEntrepreneurship in Emerging Markets is very easy but very interesting.
International Strategy: If you would like to be an executive one day and work on Harvard cases this class is a must. Plus, Pro fessor Richardo Perez is so smart and hasworked for a lo t o f huge companies.
International Growth - Lectures are very insightful and the pro fessor tends to explain concepts from his previous work. However, the midterm was incredibly difficult.Financial Reporting - Recommended only if you're an accounting major or interested in accounting. Very comprehensive course on IFRS. It's not a walk in the park thoughso don't take this if you're just trying to breeze through your studies. Investment Analysis and Portfo lio Management - Again, also not a walk in the park. If you want to learnabout level 3 material fo r the CFA exam though, this is a very helpful class

27. 36. Are there courses or pro fessors that you would advise against taking? Please explain:
IE University is a very new schoo l, so it was the first time teaching for some of our pro fessors. The two I wouldn't recommend are Onal Vural and Fernando Bautista. Theyjust didn't know how to teach all that well, and were very hard to fo llow in lectures.
Financing Entrepreneurial Companies, taught by Onal Vural, was an incredibly boring class. The pro fessor had no idea how to teach a class and all he did was read o ff aPowerPoint that was provided by the book publishers. However, the material fo r the class, which was much easier to learn from the book, was probably very useful fo raspiring entrepreneurs.
International Finance and Emerging Markets: Good subject but the worst pro fessor ever. 80% of the class dropped and he didn't even get into emerging makers.
Financial Systems and Institutions with So ledad - the pro fessor has a terrible accent and you can't understand anything she's trying to say. She means well, but worstcourse at IE. Generating Business Value - First o f all, if you want an easy class - this is the easiest course at IE that I took so go for it. However, I didn't really learn anythingfrom this class that I didn't learn in Intro to Entrepreneurship at USC. All you do is read case studies and then discuss them in class.

28. 37. Has participation in this program influenced your academic or careergoals? How?
I had never considered being an entrepreneur, but after taking several courses about it, I'm not so hesistant to start my own company. I also feel more comfortable possiblyworking abroad for a few years after graduation.
It has definitely widened the scope o f my thinking to a more international scale. I hope to one day found a company and when I do, I will now look to explo it internationalopportunities (especially in developing economies) much more than I would have o therwise.
More than I expected. I am now thinking o f go ing abroad for my masters and working in Europe or China for a couple o f years. This program is a must fo r everyone.Transfer students have to find a way to go abroad. You will regret it your entire life.
Not really. However, my current summer trip through Europe might change all that.

30. 39. Did you speak the host language, or receive any language training inthe host language prio r to , o r during your semester abroad? If yes, pleaseexplain:
I only spoke very little Spanish before getting to Spain from taking Rosetta Stone for a couple months. I took the Spanish course while I was there, but it was fairly limited. Ilearned the most Spanish from living with my host family who only spoke to me in Spanish. Their daughter spoke English, so anytime I was really confused, she could helpout.
Yes, I had 6 years o f elementary and high schoo l experience in Spanish, including getting a 4 on the AP Spanish Language exam. I had not taken or regularly spokenSpanish since high schoo l except in a brief week-long trip to Argentina.
I am fluent in spanish. Everyone at schoo l spoke english and different languages. I would say that 99% of the students, faculty and staff speak english pretty well.
Yes. I took 4 years o f Spanish in high schoo l.

35. 43. How would you recommend that students prepare for languagedifferences abroad?
I would recommend taking some sort o f course before coming, since fewer people speak English in Spain than most people think.
Try to take a language acquisition course before coming and try to speak as much o f the native language abroad as possible so you can practice.
Just take basic spanish and you'll be fine. They o ffer free spanish courses there too just incase you want to learn more.
Playing charades.

Yes, I had to change my return flight, which was hassle free and inexpensive
Yes, I used STA Travel fo r booking my flights from LA to Madrid and from Madrid to LA. When I had to reschedule my return flight, they were very easy to deal with. I wasvery satisfied overall.

40. 46. Is there any aspect o f the program that you would like to see changedor different? (VERY IMPORTANT!)
It would have been nice to have some sort o f Orientation or welcome event when we arrived at IE. It also would have been nice to have more courses to choose from, but Irealize that the its kind o f tough since the course is still very new.
They only o ffered a beginners level Spanish language course, which was useless to me, so it would be nice if they had o ffered more advanced courses. It also would havebeen helpful if they had provided more help with finding housing in Madrid. Lastly, we didn't know the general schedule for the semester until we arrived on campus. Forinstance, we were under the impression that the semester would end in June but it actually ended at the end o f April. It would have been nice to get that information ahead o ftime.
NO
I think compiling a document o f program-specific information for each institution would be helpful (perhaps based o ff o f contributions by previous students).

41. 47. Additional comments on services and coordination.
For people on USC Madrid, they received their monthly Metro /Bus cards the day they arrived, whereas we had to apply and wait almost 3 weeks to get ours, so it would benice to receive those earlier on.
Sean O'Connell is your ultimate resource! Use him and talk to him!
Perhaps double-checking or coordination to make sure everyone has registered. Though a large part was my fault, I didn't even know when classes were supposed to startor when I had to register because no emails were sent to my default address (usc email).

45. 50. How often did you travel and to where?
We had two weeklong breaks during the semester which was nice. The first break I went to London and Paris and the second break, which was a couple days longer, I wentto Switzerland, Copenhagen, Berlin, and Rome. I also did three weekend trips to Barcelona, Lisbon, and Morocco. Lastly, I did two day trips in Spain to Salamanca andValencia.
I travelled fairly frequently. I took weekend trips to Salamanca and Sevilla. I spend four days in Valencia, a week in Paris, and another two weeks traveling throughSwitzerland (Lucerne, Interlaken, Lausanne), Strasbourg, Paris, and London. After classes ended, I also went to Barcelona, Cannes, Venice, Verona, and Florence for ato tal o f two weeks.
On weekends to o ther cities within spain (only at first). After I finished schoo l. I traveled to Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France.
I travelled very little. I went to To ledo and Segovia and to Morocco for Spring Break. I'm backpacking most o f Europe this summer though.

46. 51. Did the structure o f the host institution's course schedule foster travelopportunity or prevent it? Why?
It was very nice having two separate weeklong breaks. Also for the most part we didn't have Friday classes. which allowed for weekend trips.
Yes, it o ften allowed for travel opportunities. I We were given two separate weeks o ff o f schoo l, during which I did a good amount o f my traveling. I also had several threeday weekends (lo ts o f Fridays o ff) which allowed for additional traveling.
Jest. the course work is light and kind o f easy compare to USC
prevented it. The course schedule changed every week - hindering effective planning for longer trips.

47. 52. Do you have any tips or information about traveling while abroad thatyou would like to share with upcoming exchange students preparing for their trip?
I highly recommend using EasyJet, since they have great prices and service. I used RyanAir a couple times too but they aren't know for having the best customer service, and a couple o f my firends had issues with them. I also suggest do ing some group trips and so lo trips, because you can usually see more when you're by yourself and it'sa growing experience.
Go to Las Fallas, a weeklong fire festival, in Valencia if you're go ing to be in Spain. It's much better than St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, which is o ften the same week. Don't gowhere everyone else goes. Try to have your own experience. It will be much more unique and authentic.

Madrid is a generally safe city in terms o f very low vio lent crime and sexual assault. However, it's a prime haven for pickpockets. I was never pickpocketed but I know plentyof people who were. It's always best to be vigilant in this regard.

55. 60. What was the most difficult part?
The hardest part fo r me at first was the language barrier, since my Spanish was very limited. It was also difficult socially not having a campus, since it was harder to connectwith students since we lived all across the city o f Madrid.
Figuring out a comfortable, well-priced housing arrangement.
Adjusting to the time difference and Culture
The first two weeks. I happened to unintentionally arrive two weeks late (two weeks after classes started). I was thus battling catching up with course material, gettingsituated in a new country, and finding an apartment all at the same time.

56. 61. Describe a situation that you experienced as a result o f culture shockor cultural misunderstanding. How did you reso lve it?
There were definitely many cultural differences, but none that invo lved any culture shock or misunderstandings that I can think o f.
My host family always served far too much food at the dinner table and expected me to eat it (they acted o ffended if I didn't). This was in the spirit o f good hospitality but itresulted in a very uncomfortable situation for me, where I was eating beyond being full in order to upset the family. I ended up being much more assertive about how muchfood I could eat at dinner and eventually they caught on and lowered the amount o f food they served me/let me serve myself.
Spaniards drink a lo t a party a lo t more than I thought. Also they have lunch and dinner pretty late. I have to adjust to all o f that.
Being called "Japan Japan" by a street vendor in Marrakech. I just laughed, said "Ana mirikani", and walked away.

I am proud o f passing all o f my courses while abroad, and stepping out o f my comfort zone to experience a new culture. I am also proud o f the fact I was able to travel andnavigate around Europe all by myself.
I'm proud I fo rged so many strong relationships with students who weren't from USC. I made it a specific goal to try to befriend as many IE students as possible, and I thinkI came out with some really good connections and friends as a result.
Learning more about the European economy and way o f do ing business.

58. 63. What do you wish you had known about before leaving?
They dress fairly nice on a daily basis when they go to schoo l. However they don't get dressed up in suits and nice clo thes for presentations, so I could have left my suitand dress shoes at home. Also, once you have decided you have packed light enough, still take out a few more shorts and pants, becuase you don't need as manyclo thes as you think.
How salty, o ily, and bland traditional Spanish food can be. There's lo ts o f good Spanish food but you really have to search for it. Your typical Spanish restaurant is justmediocre and some are really atrociously bad, so you really have to find the gems in order to enjoy yourself.
Nothing in particular.

59. 64. Do you have any travel tips to share?
Depending on your home bank, it is very useful to open a Spanish bank account, and it's not as complicated as it seems. In general, it's best to book flights well inadvance, but fo r some locations it's actually best to wait it out a little. For instance I booked my Morocco flight about 6 weeks before go ing, but the roundtrip price droppedabout 40 euros 2 weeks later, and then the price went back up. Also be sure that all o f the accomodations in your city aren't booked before booking your plane or trainticket. Group trips are fun, but don't feel like you have to wait fo r someone else to go with you everywhere, because you may miss out on go ing to some great places.Lastly, I wouldn't recommend traveling the last 2-3 weeks o f the semester since that's when there's a lo t o f work to do.
Try to dress like the general population does. If you don't stand out as a tourist, people will treat you differently and you'll get a much more authentic feel fo r the place you'retraveling in.
Study the culture o f the city you are traveling to . Like food, tips and etc.
Be flexible and open-minded. Accept that the world will throw things your way in ways you have never seen before. Throw aside any frustrations, think and talk it over withsomeone, and then figure it out. It's really that simple.

60. 65. What would you like to say to the students go ing after you?
I highly recommed living with a host family if you want to learn the language or experience true Spanish cuisine and culture. It's tempting to hang out just with USC students, but the IE students are really coo l to hang out with too, and they know the city very well. Make sure to go to class, becuase they take participation much more seriously therethan at USC, and most o f the classes are pretty interesting.
Come with an open mind and try experiencing things you couldn't experience anywhere else in the world (especially in the U.S.)
IE Business School is number one in Europe and madrid is the best city in Spain. Trust me I went to almost every city and all o f my friends agree too.
Good luck and have fun.

61. 66. Any final thoughts...
I'm so very glad I did IEP, and I would recommend it to everyone. I think it's a tougher adjustment than most people make it out to be, but living in a new county is truly alearning and growth experience that's very valuable. Going abroad was definitely a life changing experience, and now I wish I could go back. Take advantage o f your timethere, becuase it goes by very quickly.
If you have the courage and feel safe do ing it, try taking at least one trip alone. It can get lonely at times, but there's something about the so lidarity and the uncertainty thatmakes it a very memorable experience. You alone have contro l over what you do, where you go, whom you meet, and how you feel. You can grow a lo t as a person fromit.
