June 2012 deadline is Wednesday 23rd May

Hi all,

I am approached by a lot of Community groups who wish to be featured in the magazine and I am always happy to oblige with space if it is available.

This month, however, I have been contacted because friends and relatives of a local man, Trevor Elias aged 77 has been missing since the 7th of April. Trevor was last seen near his home in Abertridwr, Caerphilly.

Clearly friends and family are very worried about Trevor and have (with the help of Police) been involved in an extensive campaign to him but so far nothing!

Leah Nightingale, a friend of Mr. Elias has written to me and I have printed her letter on page 32.

A Facebook group exists called “Candles for Trevor” and you can show your support by obtaining posters to display in the hope that it may spark someone’s memory and lead to Trevor’s safe return.

Best Wishes

Paul

June 2012 deadline is Wednesday 23rd May

If the very strong rumours are correct, at the centre of the Speech will be a Bill to reform the House of Lords. Reform of the second chamber will be expensive and with the country facing huge economic problems, as well as swinging cuts being imposed by the Government, Ministers will have to justify these reforms at a time when the priorities of the public are jobs and economic growth.

The Government in Westminster has decided that the most important thing for Parliament to consider is the reform of the House of Lords because the Deputy Prime Minster, Nick Clegg, is very worried that the Liberal Democrats have got very little to show for agreeing to be part of the Conservative-led Government. It was a big disappointment for Mr Clegg when the electorate conclusively voted against his plan for the Alternative Vote in last year’s referendum.

Strangely, however, the Deputy Prime Minister is extremely reluctant to give a referendum on Lords reform, even though it is one of the most signifi cant changes to our constitution in years. As Labour’s constitutional reform spokesman, I will be arguing that as the Government is currently holding referendums on elected mayors, and last year we had a vote on whether the Welsh Assembly should have more powers, surely we should have a vote on Lords reform - just as we had a vote on whether the voting system for Westminster should be changed.

This is not only my view and the view of the Labour Party; it is also the view of a whole range of

constitutional academic experts and the view of a cross-party committee of MPs and Peers who were asked by the Government to examine the issue of Lords reform.

I also think it is very important that before we have an elected or partly elected second Chamber, as the Government are proposing, we give careful thought to precisely what powers the second Chamber has.

The danger is that if you have two elected Chambers then there will be constant disagreement between them. At the moment if there is a big diff erence of opinion between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, it is the House of Commons which always gets it way. This is because “primacy” is held by the House of Commons because it is an elected chamber, whereas the House of Lords is not.

This point is very important. The fear that many of us have is that if both Houses are elected then the Lords can claim that they have just as much right to argue for something as does the Commons. In our parliamentary democracy the view of the people, as expressed through the ballot box, is paramount. If both Houses claim a mandate from the people, the very real danger is that there will be permanent disagreement or “gridlock” between the two Houses. This could lead to government grinding to a halt.

This is why Labour will be arguing for important changes to the Government’s Bill when it comes before the House of Commons. Inevitably, these are complicated issues and are not easily resolved. But I believe it is important that any historic changes are properly thought through.

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

On 9 May Members of Parliament and Members of the House of Lords will hear the Queen’s Speech, when Her Majesty will come to Parliament to set out the Government’s agenda for the next session.

Staged by Caerffi li and District Twinning Association, the exhibition ‘Glances at Brittany and Wales’ is a comparison of the two regions between 1850 and 1950. The exhibition marks 20 years of twinning between Caerphilly and Lannion in Brittany and was originally shown there last year.

Representatives from Lannion will be in attendance for the offi cial opening on 2nd June. The exhibition will run until 10th June, 1000 -1600 daily, free admission. The Association, which expanded in 1995 to include the twinning between Llanbradach and Ploubezre, will also welcome visitors from Brittany during July for the biennial visit.

The Association arranges visits to and from the Lannion area, fostering links between sports clubs and other groups, and also holds a varied social programme throughout the year. New members, especially those who are able to host, are always welcome.

Seasonal Recipe

Asparagus Frittata

Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water.

Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.

Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.

Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.

Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

• 275g new potatoes

• 450g asparagus

• 5 large eggs

• 200g buffalo mozzarella

• 50g Parmesan, grated

• 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Asparagus

Serves 4-6Preparation time 10 minutes

Cooking time 20 minutes

For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again. This

delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mild flavours of the mozzarella and eggs mean that

the asparagus is still the star of the dish.

Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign

Caerphilly Miners has been holding regular coffee mornings over the past two years to raise awareness of our campaign to take over the Caerphilly Miners Hospital as a resource for the community. Providing a focus for consultation and new ideas, for gaining new members and offers of help and volunteering has been helpful.

We want to celebrate what we have achieved to date and we want to focus on shaping the future. We are inviting our Friends, our stakeholders, project working group participants, trustees, street ambassadors, volunteers and core supporters to an Event from 10 am – 12.30 pm.

We want to thank all the people who have helped us so far, whether they have volunteered their time, pledged their support, supported us financially, or helped to shape our projects.

We will present what we have done and run workshops and activities. This is not a drop-in, but it is open to anyone who would like to come along.

If you are interested in attending please contact Katherine Hughes on 029 2088 6569 or [email protected].

June 2012 deadline is Wednesday 23rd May

I think that one of the most common reasons that people don’t bother to put some plants out in their garden for the summer is a suspicion that they will fail, and that instead of passers-by stopping to admire, take photos and ‘pat you on the back’ – you will see people scurrying past your garden giggling at your horticultural misfortune, as those seedlings die a long slow summery death in your borders.

So here, for no extra charge, is my suggestion for a slug proof, shade proof, sun proof and rain proof plant for any garden or tub.

Begonia semprefl orensThis year demand for this little beauty is likely to be high – as there is a worldwide disease aff ecting Busy Lizzies, Britains favourite for the last 10 years or so, which means that very few nurseries are growing them – So in 2012 Begonias are now defi nitely ‘in’.

There are than one type of Begonia – all lovely – but the small shiny leafed Semprefl orens types are the easiest, cheapest and most versatile for borders and tubs. You can normally buy them in packs of 6 plants for around £2.00 - £3.00 per pack, so you should be able to get about 60 plants for under £30.00.

I would plant them about 8 inches apart in a border, and mix a good handful of compost, and teaspoonful of into slow release fertilizer into the hole before you plant – we all need some food if we are going to perform to our best.

As we go to print there is still a risk of frost – so I wouldn’t be planting any tender bedding plants (which includes

Begonias) out until late May; but if you see some nice ones at a good price before then - grab ‘em while you can and keep them somewhere sunny outside, so that you can whip them inside overnight if a frost is forecast.

Don’t forget to water them, and send us a photo of your summer displays – Thanks!

Employers who participate in the scheme will then have the chance to expand and make those posts permanent. All posts created through Jobs Growth Wales will be paid at or above National Minimum Wage, for a minimum 25-hour working week.

I hope that employers in Caerphilly and the Rhymney Valley will participate. They will receive financial assistance in order to take on unemployed young workers, boosting their skill levels and long-term employability prospects.

In return, young people will be able to improve their confidence, skills and work-readiness. £75 million will be invested overall and the scheme will aim to create 12,000 jobs. Jobs Growth Wales will complement our Apprenticeships in Wales scheme, which offers initiatives to encourage employers to recruit more apprentices.

Our Young Recruits Programme provides funding to employers offering high quality apprenticeship programmes who recruit and train additional young apprentices.

Apprenticeships are important as they fuel the future skills base of our nation.

Along with Jobs Growth Wales they’re vital to boosting skill levels and tackling youth unemployment.

A major announcement recently by the Welsh Government was that of Jobs Growth Wales. Jobs Growth Wales will create new and valuable job opportunities for unemployed young people for a six month period.

Caerphilly events update

Tredomen Business & Technology Centre, Tredomen House, Tredomen Park, Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, CF82 7FN | Email: [email protected]

Hi all,

Caerphilly town is a hive of activity this summer with some exciting events taking place throughout the coming months. It’s extremely busy here in the office with plans in full flow for a jam-packed events diary from May until September!

It was announced last week that BBC Proms in the Park 2012 will be returning to Caerphilly on Saturday 8th September. BBC Cymru Wales, in collaboration with Caerphilly County Borough Council, will entertain the promenaders at Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields, with a magic themed Prom. Joining the UK-wide revelry of the Last Night of the Proms, the enchanting evening will be led by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Families and music enthusiasts are invited to conjure up picnics and wave flags to bring the world-famous BBC Proms season to a close. The evening willculminate with fireworks and the traditional last night medley of sing-a-long numbers. The full line-up of artists and presenters will be announced over the coming weeks. To keep up to date with the events developments including ticket news, visit www.bbc.co.uk/proms.

Caerphilly Flower Festival takes place on 26th & 27th May and this year enthusiastic individuals and local groups are being encouraged to get involved in a children’s wheelbarrow competition.

Look out for other exciting activities taking place on Saturday 26th May, including the Olympic Torch Relay and the NEW Caerphilly Food Festival. There will be over 60 food and craft stalls dotted through Caerphilly town, animal displays and children’s activities including drumming workshops, crafts and face painting. Taste and buy, watch and learn, participate and enjoy, that’s what the day is all about with cookery demonstrations and talks, food stalls, food crafts, mad chefs, walking and talking eggs as well as some other bizarre food related street theatre!

For more information visit: caerphilly.gov.uk/foodfestival and caerphilly.gov.uk/flowerfestival (wheelbarrow competition application forms are available online). www.facebook.com/

visitcaerphilly

Visit caerphilly.gov.uk/events to view full details on all of the events and to see timings for the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Big Cheese weekend is only three months away (27th - 29th July) with lots of fun events and activities being organised to make this year’s festival one to remember. We are looking for teams of fun energetic people to take part in one of the highlights of the event - the Great Cheese Race, this year with ‘Olympic themed’ fancy dress adding to the laughter and enjoyment. Download a Cheese Race application from caerphilly.gov.uk/events.

The ‘What’s On - Spring/Summer’ Guide is now available in retail outlets and The Visit Caerphilly Centre, so get yourself a copy! You can also download it from visitcaerphilly.com.

Enjoy the events!

Missing Man - Trevor Elias - Can you help?

“Well what can I say about Trevor......He is just a local legend to both small children and the hardest of men. A bit of loner, never married or had any children, which makes this all the more sad, for me anyway.

I’m not 100% sure on his family background, the most I know is that he has a sister Cynthia who he visited every Saturday, and a brother, with a few nieces and nephews. some of his other siblings have passed away.

There is much speculation over when he was last seen ,some say the police said it was Saturday, walking towards the pit area. He was wearing brown suit and brown loafers and may appear confused. I hope you will appreciate that there are so many people saying they saw him here and there, that I don’t think even the police know for defi nite where he was last seen but, this is the best I could gather.

Trevor is and always will be a lovely gent, he loved a bet on the horses, and the community hoped and prayed he would be back for the grand national.

He always had time for a chat and you’d be lucky if you got one word in the whole conversation, but he’d always make you giggle with his never ending supply of jokes which is what he was best known for.”

If you have any information, I can be contacted via email on [email protected] or you can call the Police on 101.

Many thanks again

Leah Nightingale

On Saturday 7th April, Trevor Elias a well liked and popular fi gure went missing in Abertridwr. Trevor’s family and friends are desperate to fi nd him safe and well. Leah Nightingale, a friend of Trevor’s sent Local View a letter in the hope that you can help. FREE OF CHARGE

Happy Birthday Kip!

Kip McGrath Education Centre Caerphilly celebrates its first birthday on May 1st, Centre Director Keith has the same birthday, but not his first!

Official Opening

‘Kip’ was opened by local MP Wayne David on 1st May 2011. In our first year we have helped many local students to improve their confidence and performance in English, Maths and Science.

Success story

Our students have been helped to success in early reading, Primary English and Maths, transition to secondary school, Key Stage 3, GCSE English Maths and English, and private school entrance exams.

Kip McGrath affirms that any student can improve his or her confidence and performance using ‘Kip’s’ tried and tested methods.

‘Kip’ students build on what they have learnt in school. Each student has an individual learning pattern based on the FREE assessment they attend before their first lesson.

Real Teachers

Keith and June Anthony are experienced teachers , having taught for 30 and 20 years respectively, in local Schools. Keith and June are joined at ‘Kip’ by Jemma Hills, a specialist Key Stage 2 (Junior) teacher, and Dr Keri Page, a specialist Science teacher. Dr Keri is Head of a science department at a comprehensive school serving Caerphilly.

Keith, June, Jemma and Keri are real teachers, but ‘Kip’ is not a school. So its Christian names all round! Also, all lessons end with games (although they are English or Maths games!).

If there are children involved there is also the issue of deciding where the children should reside permanently. These tricky elements form part and parcel of the work that the avid divorce lawyer has to work out, with a view to arriving at a sensible solution for all parties involved.

At the end of March 2012, the Court of Appeal handed down a judgment in the fi rst ever Civil Partnership appeal case. In that case, Lawrence v Gallagher the court had to consider the division of assets in a Civil Partnership.

The most striking feature from the judgment was that of how a pre-acquired asset owned by one party was deemed

to be used and enjoyed by both parties within the Civil Partnership, and for that reason the court felt that it should be equally shared as part of the settlement.

There are many other elements to the Judgment, which makes interesting reading if readers want to know more. However, the principle outlined above is worth noting.

Legal Eagle - Dividing assetsGoing through a divorce can be a traumatic time for most, but consideration must be given as to what is to happen to the matrimonial assets when parties separate.

June 2012 deadline is Wednesday 23rd May

I was impressed with this shop owners ‘heart to help’ and then even more impressed how much had already been raised by lots of local people with that same desire to help.

Well done folks! There is a sense, when we give together like this, that ‘This is how it should be’.

It is more than just a nice feeling because we have ‘done the right thing’. It is a recognition that we are all in this together, if one of us is hurting - then all of us are hurting, a bit. It should be hard to ignore all the needs around us … maybe we have been become used to it because of all the stuff we see on TV etc.

Pentecost is a Christian Festival that is celebrated during May, churches quite rightly celebrate the fact that this was when God sent his Holy Spirit

to the disciples – who were changed for ever and the church was born … in an amazing way. Supernatural miracles occurred as those ‘followers’ became leaders … but, ‘natural miracles’ occurred too as they started sharing everything that they had, money, food, homes – it just seemed that’s how that it should be!

www.tomsdream.co.uk – is aiming to raise some £45,000.00 to fund a local Caerphilly lad, Tom, to go over to America to undergo an operation and treatment for his type of Cerebral Palsy.

You can donate on line or catch up on fundraising events via his website.

Roger Crookes - [email protected]

How it should be....Thought for the Month

So, I had popped in to our local spar to pay for our lucky lotto numbers (again), and was told that the nice chap who runs the shop was going on some sort of Trek up a mountain in India to raise some money for a local lad who needs an operation in America (see details below).
